Food, creative handmade gifts, music, wine and of course grape stomping made for a day filled with laughter.

Honor the Fallen

)n Friday, the military released the name of the Marine who is now the first American casualty in operations against ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria. Corporal Jordan Spears, 21, was lost at sea in an aircraft incident on Wednesday. From the Department of the Navy:

"Cpl. Jordan L. Spears, 21, of Memphis, Indiana, was lost at sea Oct 1, 2014, in the North Arabian Gulf. He was assigned to Marine Tiltrotor Squadron 163, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California.
U.S. forces in the North Arabian Gulf suspended a search and rescue operation for Cpl. Spears Oct. 2, after efforts to locate him were unsuccessful.
Cpl. Spears went into the water Oct. 1, when the aircraft he was aboard appeared to lose power and descended to the surface of the ocean shortly after takeoff from USS Makin Island (LHD 8). Another air crewman also exited the aircraft at the same time and was safely recovered. He is in stable condition aboard Makin Island.
The pilot of the aircraft, a U.S. Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey, was eventually able to regain control and safely land back aboard Makin Island. There were four personnel aboard the aircraft when it took off, two pilots and two enlisted aircrew. Cpl. Spears was one of the two enlisted aircrew who exited the aircraft when it appeared the Osprey might crash into the ocean.
U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel conducted an extensive search of the area using all available assets, which continued throughout the night of Oct. 1, and the next day.
The Osprey's crew was participating in flight operations in support of its current mission at the time of the mishap.
The Navy and Marine Corps will investigate the cause of the incident."

Corporal Spears home was at Miramar Air Station, about 40 miles south of Camp Pendleton near San Diego. He was killed in the line of duty, serving his country, and his Corps. His fellow Marines will mourn and remember him. As we hope all Americans will.

Copper Lions and Library join together for a theatrical fund raiser

The Copperopolis Friends of the Library and the Copperopolis Lake Tulloch Lions Club presents a night at the theater on Thursday, October 23 at 7pm. The musical play is "Spelling Bee" performed by the Sierra Rep theater in east Sonora.  It is a musical about  six adolescent outsiders trying to fit in and win the championship of a lifetime.

The tickets are $20 and benefit the library and lions club.  Tickets are available at the  Copperopolis library, Umpqua bank, the Sports Pub, and Central Sierra Real Estate office.  

Seating is not reserved.  First come first served.

Meet Constance Gibson - Copperopolis Elementary student council member

Constance Gibson was elected secretary of the 2014/15 Copperopolis Elementary student council.

 

Constance is excited to be "keeping minutes of the Monday morning meetings to send to the other council members and to going with Faith (president) to the classrooms to make announcements." However she stresses, "The most important job of the secretary is organization, organization is a big thing." 

This 6th grader enjoys English and writing. I hinted she may be able to write for the Gazette as a mini intern.

Her hobbies are acting with CSTARS, cross country, track and will be playing volleyball this year.

Constance aspires to be the first woman president of the United States.

Letter to the Editor - Why I support Art Moore for Congress by Congressman George Radanovich

        After the redistricting process of 2012, Tom McClintock became the congressman of the newly redrawn Fourth Congressional District of California.  The 4th Congressional District is a vast and sweeping district that includes all of the Sierra Nevada from Lake Tahoe to Auberry.   I know Tom McClintock because I served with him in Congress, and today Tom represents me in Congress.  Tom talks conservative principles, the same ones that I supported in Congress for sixteen years, and I still believe that these principles reflect the majority view of the voters in the 4th Congressional district.

 

        However, performance is as important as words, and that’s why I am supporting Republican Art Moore to represent me in Washington. There are three reasons that have shaped my decision:

 

Endorsement letter rules for the Copper Gazette

Due to the large amount of endorsement letters the Copper Gazette is receiving we would like to lay some ground rules for posting of said letters.

This election has multiple candidates in multiple jurisdictions. With this said, though the Copper Gazette reaches far beyond Copperopolis with its news and readership, we would not want to inundate the site with letters not pertaining to candidates within the Copperopolis sphere of influence. ie: Congressional District 4, Judicial candidates, CCWD candidates and MTUESD candidates.

If you would like to submit a letter of endorsement for a candidate please follow the following format. Candidates name and the position they are seeking to be elected, your reasons why you are endorsing said candidate, your current employment and your name.

Endorsement letters will be open to commenting from the public, though not anonymously.

6th grader Faith Robinsons duties as President of the student council are to "make announcements at morning meetings in front of the whole school." She ran for President because she "wanted to start a dance program, art program and music program."
Her favorite subject is Social Studies and her hobbies are "singing and dancing."
Faith loves to cook and hopes to own her own restaurant when she grows up.

Cal Fire press release re: Fire Danger Exists Despite Cooler Weather

San Andreas – The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit, is reminding all residents the burn suspension is still in effect, until further notice.  Fire danger remains above average across the Central Sierras and, even though we have recently experienced some moisture and cooler temperatures, the chance of large and damaging fires still exists. 

If a homeowner does conduct burning operations, during the time period when burning has been suspended, they are subject to the issuance of a citation (misdemeanor), fines, and may have to pay suppression costs to put the fire out.

CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit will continue to monitor the weather and fuel conditions, and will lift the burn suspension when conditions allow for safe burning.

Calaveras Artist, Libby Fife, teaches “Split Primary” Six Color Mixing Chart for Watercolors

Calaveras Arts Council is now offering affordable art classes at the Gallery Store location at 22 N. Main Street in San Andreas.  Local Calaveras artist, Libby Fife, is teaching a beginning art class on how to create a color wheel.  In this one day class, you will learn to make a version of a “split” primary color chart that uses both a “cool” to “warm” version of each of the three primary colors in a your  watercolor kit.  You will learn how to mix a variety of primary and secondary colors as well as some lovely grays and browns (neutrals).  This class is focused on the concept of creating a limited palette to use as a guide in painting or sketching.  Limited palettes can help to unify your sketches and teach you about your paint properties, and are a useful compositional tool.  They are great for beginning painters on the go too because there is less to carry.

Mark Twain Medical Center has recruited a women’s health doctor to Calaveras County.  Dr. Ali Parsa will practice Women’s Health in San Andreas serving women in the Tri-County area.

“Mark Twain Medical Center is proud to bring women’s specialty care services back to our community,” said Craig Marks, Hospital President. “Dr. Parsa will provide comprehensive women’s health services from well woman care to specialty care, such as laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Parsa will enable us to better meet the total healthcare needs of the women of Calaveras County.”

24 September 2014, a fourteen year old female came to the police department with relatives to report a sexual assault, which had occurred on 21 September 2014.
The victim related she was at a residence on the 300 block of Barretta Street when the assault took place. At the residence were Stephanie Palmertree, 34 of Sonora; Rebecca Forbes, 23 of Soulsbyville; Chance Ditmars, 21 of Jamestown; and Adam Campo 24 of Modesto. All four adults gave the fourteen year old victim alcohol while she was at the residence.

Copper Elementary welcomes new librarian Aurora Qualls

Aurora Qualls is a very familiar face at Copperopolis Elementary as a volunteer and at times paid staff on the playground, the kitchen and within the classrooms.

With three sons, Austin, Ben and Adam all at one time or another students at Copper, Aurora has seen her fair share of the inside of classrooms and the library.

Last year Aurora was able to substitute in the library and really felt at home. When the position came open she applied at once.

Since Aurora has a passion for books it should come as no surprise that her favorite part of the job, besides all the children, is the unlimited access to books. "I love finding new books I haven't read."

Her favorite book? The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.

Meet Quade Walker - Copperopolis Elementary student council member

Quade Walker was elected as treasurer of the Copperopolis Elementary 2014/15 student council.

5th grader Quade Walker looks forward to working the "percentages of spirit count, monday metings and setting up student of the month" as part of his duties as treasurer. He ran because he "wanted to have the experience to run for other things in the future."
His favorite subject is "going home." But if ha to pick a second it would be science. His hobbies are dirt bike riding and "riding my rip stick."
Quade hopes to be a marine biologist when he grows up. Though he did want to know how much a journalist made, when he was informed what a pittance it was, he stuck with marine biology.

Public Health press release re:First Case of Imported Ebola in U.S.

The first case of Ebola in the United States has been confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] on September 30, 2014.  Based on travel history, it was determined that the person contracted the disease during a visit to Africa. Symptoms did not develop until five days after arriving in the United States. No symptoms were shown during the flight from West Africa. CDC does not recommend that people on the same flight undergo monitoring.  The patient is currently hospitalized and isolated in Dallas, Texas.  Local public health officials have started identifying the close contacts of the person for further daily monitoring for up to 21 days after a possible exposure.

Sheriff Dept Press release re: Two Arrested in Valley Springs

Deputies contacted a female subject on the 7600 block of Baldwin Street, in Valley Springs. The

Female subject was seen walking in a residential area on private property. The deputies recognized the female subject as Susan Marie Stratton (31 years old), who was placed under arrest for misdemeanor warrants. The deputies conducted a security check of the residence that was located on the property. 

As deputies were knocking on the door, a white male subject exited out the back and began to run, jumping over fences. Deputies gave chase when they heard a female subject yelling. Deputies contacted the female subject and she stated the white male subject had forced his way into her home and prevented her from leaving. The subject had told her that he was running from the Sheriff's Department and needed a place to hide. 

Hospice of the Sierra Offers Training for New Volunteers

September 30, 2014 (Sonora, CA) — Sonora Regional Medical Center’s Hospice of the Sierra is offering training for anyone interested in becoming a hospice volunteer.  The orientation and training session will occur on October 23, 2014 from 1 to 5pm in Sonora.  Volunteers will learn how to provide support and respite care for patients and families.  There are volunteer opportunities to support people in their grief journey, or to provide clerical support in the office.

Sonora PD press release re: Assault with a deadly weapon

28 September 2014, at approx. 12:29 pm, Officers responded to 102 Hospital Road for a reported assault. When officers arrived they made contact with the 30 year old male victim.
The victim related he was on work furlough and working at 102 Hospital Road, when he observed a female subject whom he knows. He contacted the female, who had visible injuries to her face. The victim asked the female if James Vanhorn, 41 of Sonora, was responsible for the injuries to her face and she stated no.
During the victim’s conversation with the female, Vanhorn arrived and started yelling at the victim to get away from the female. When the victim didn’t move, Vanhorn started hitting the victim in the head with a walking cane. The victim was able to distance himself from Vanhorn to stop the attack, while witnesses called the police department.
Vanhorn was contacted and taken into custody without incident and transported to the Tuolumne County Jail where he was booked for felony assault with a deadly weapon. Vanhorn is on AB 109 release from prison, out of San Bernardino County for felony resisting an officer.
The victim suffered large welts on his head, but refused medical attention.

Meet Hunter Heath - Copperopolis Elementary student council member

Hunter Heath holds the position of Sergeant at Arms on the 2014/15 Copperopolis Elementary student council.

Hunter is in 4th grade. His duties as Sergeant at Arms are "ringing the bell, leading the pledge of allegiance at Monday morning meetings." He ran because he "wanted to see what it would feel like to be elected, its my first time."
Hunter enjoys math and bb guns, dirt bikes and bow and arrow target practice.
He wants to be a "gun tester" when he grows up.

"160 Year Anniversary Celebration of the Foundry" Lecture & Demonstration - Angels Camp Museum

Thursday, October 2, 7 - 8 p.m.

The Angels Camp Foundry, California Electric Steel, is celebrating its 160th anniversary this year. Established in 1854 to service the Mother Lode mining industry, the foundry has continued to evolve over the years to meet the changing times and needs both locally and now nationwide. In 1985, the foundry was relocated to a new facility and completely updated.

"Co-owned by Bruce and Karen Whittle and Bob and Gretchen Helvey, the foundry's claim to fame is being the oldest steel foundry west of the Mississippi. It started as a blacksmith shop operated by J. M. Wooster and Andrew Gardiner. Because of the local demand for mining machinery, it became the Altaville Foundry and Machine Shop in 1854. Demand for machinery was high, so in 1857 Wooster and Gardiner built a larger foundry in Winterton, or Forks, as Altaville was called then, on the site of what is now the eastern side of Angels Towne Center along Highway 49. A partial stone wall from the original foundry building still stands there among the oaks." (February 15, 2013 article in the Calaveras Enterprise)
