Sonora PD press release re:Injury Accident

26 May 2014, at approx. 2:26 pm, emergency personnel responded to Mono Way, in the area of Timberhills shopping center, for a reported injury accident.

During the investigation, it was determined that Georgiana Rogers, 71 of Sonora, was exiting the Timberhills Shopping Center in her 1991 Acura sedan, and was preparing to make a left turn onto Mono Way to travel westbound.

County Fire districts staff additional engines 5-27-14

An additional 5 engines were staffed on May 27, 2015 from 13:00 to 20:00 within Calaveras County to cover behind CalFire engines that were committed to other incidents in and out of the County.

 

The agencies that had additional engines staffed were Central Calaveras, Cal Co, San Andreas, Murphys and Copperopolis.

VFW Post 12118 Memorial Day Flag ceremony - honorable remembrance

Approximately 80 people joined the James D Piper VFW Post 12118 on Memorial Day in the Copperopolis Cemetery for the annual Memorial Day flag raising ceremony to commemorate those who have served our Country.

The ceremony commenced with the pledge of allegiance and the National Anthem led by the Copper Hills 4H. It was followed by the heart stopping sound of a 21 gun salute from the VFW Post 12118 Honor Guard followed by a slow lowering of the flag as the haunting sounds of Taps was played, signifying the ‘Fallen Warriors End’ the end of a journey. Hats were removed, hands were placed over hearts and tears filled the eyes of many.

Bouquets of white for purity, blue for eternity and red for memory of the heroic dead who have fallen in defense of the United States were placed at the base of the flagpole by officers within the VFW. A wreath was placed beside the flowers by the President of the Ladies Auxiliary symbolizing remembrance.

Closing the ceremony, Cub Scout Pack 347 and local girl scouts sang My Country Tis of Thee.

The veterans then paired up with the children of Copper Hills 4H and Cub Scout Pack 347 to place flags on the 38 known graves of veterans who are laid to rest in the Copperopolis Cemetery.  

“The freedoms we enjoy today have been earned with these fallen veterans lives.” Said Gilbert.

Annual Reenactment of an 1852 Gold Rush Tent Town-May 29-June 1, 2014

During the early days of the California Gold Rush, as miners streamed through the undeveloped hills of the Mother Lode, tent and shanty towns sprung up overnight.  Saloons, boarding houses, restaurants, laundries, express offices, and tent stores offered the homesick miner many goods, services and diversions, and the laws of supply and demand ruled the land.  It didn’t take long for enterprising argonauts to realize that mining the pockets of the miners was an easier way to get their gold.

At Columbia State Historic Park in Tuolumne County in early June of each year, docents and staff recreate an early tent town to demonstrate the daily life of the young state. “It was really an active merchant economy,” according to park staff who help organize the event.  “There were a lot of opportunities for people who knew how to provide a service, or were willing to bring in goods that were in high demand, such as liquor, dry goods, and provisions.  And miners were willing to hand over their newly acquired riches for a few luxuries.”

Park staff and a crew of dedicated volunteers spend hours painstakingly researching the details of daily life of the early tent towns.  “We’ll never know exactly how life was like for those early visitors, but we spend a lot of time reading their journals, newspapers, and studying archeological remains” to cobble together a story of enterprising adventurers, looking to get rich, as well as to have a good time.

Sheriff Dept unveils new K9 Narcotics Dog 'Buster'

The Calaveras County Sheriff's Department unveiled their latest weapon on the war on drugs May 27th....'Buster' the new canine deputy narcotics detection dog.

Buster is a 2 1/2 year old Dutch Shepherd handled by Corporal Chad Poortinga, a 10 year veteran with the SO. "I have always wanted to be a K9 handler" said Portinga. Explaining how its more than just coming to work and working with a dog, the dog is part of his family. He tells his young children that Buster is a "smelly dog. My kids love that."

When the K9 program, which had ceased to exist 14 years ago, began gaining momentum with the help of the Friends of the Calaveras Sheriff's Office (FOCSO) in late 2012, many interested individuals came forward, yet Portinga was chosen for the job.

"Chad" is one of those officers "that will go over the top." Said Sgt Eberhardt.

"It takes the right person to do this job" said Sheriff Kuntz, "it is a huge commitment.".

SAN ANDREAS – In Calaveras County, 3 people were arrested by the CHP between 6:00 pm Friday and 11:59 pm Monday.  2 arrests were for Driving Under the Influence and one for Possession of a Controlled Substance.  Our Officers handled 4 accidents during this time period.  Unfortunately 1 of the accidents involved a fatality

During the holiday weekend the San Andreas Officers wrote 16 citations.  Most were for speeding including several mechanical violations.  There was 1 citation issued for passing over Double Yellow Lines and 1 citation went to a motorist for having his music too loud.

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding

812,784 acre-feet of water.  The lake level dropped two feet this week and is currently at 915 ft. above sea level and 170 ft. from full.  The water is stained in some areas, and clear in others.  There are mud lines forming near the shore throughout the day. The average water temperature is 68-75 degrees and rising daily.  The boat launch ramps on the Glory Hole side have been moved back out to the end of the point which makes for an easy walk. 

   

10-year old Hunter Holguin and 6-year old Tanner Holguin caught a handful of kokanee while trolling near the dam and the spillway.

Community Garden update - volunteer help needed

We have tomato starts which are quite large and already have aggressive roots.  They are heirloom and Ace varieties, and both will produce large, meaty tomatoes.  They have out-grown their pots, and need to be planted before the heat puts them in shock.  They received a nice watering yesterday, and again this morning, and are resting in the shade on a nice bed of leaves behind the picnic table.

This week we are asking for help on Wednesday morning, 5/28, to prep the long tomato row (south end of the garden along the fence).  It's been tilled and needs only a final weeding and to have the sides shoveled up a bit.

Then, Wednesday night, we're asking all to come and help plant and water in the 35+ plants.

Pay it forward in memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice

Arnold resident Richard 'Dick' James has paid it forward every Memorial Day for as long as there has been a coffee shop in Arnold.

After ordering his daily mocha piled high with whipped cream, Dick gave the young barrista a $100.00 bill with instructions to buy the next $100.00 worth of drinks for customers as they came in. She was also instructed to hand out a leaflet to each recipient of the pay it forward drink with the following information:

Your beverage was purchased for you this Memorial Day 'holiday' weekend to remind you of the many service members who have given their lives for their country. Additionally, it was purchased in memory of my special friends who lost their lives in South Vietnam:

Staff Sergeant Harold G. Bennett, Special Forces (Green Beret) MACV advisor, captured by Viet Cong on 29 December 1964,executed by Viet Cong in June 1965.

Captain Leo M. Donker, Detachment A-412, 5th Special Forces Group (Green Beret), killed 3 April 1966 by a Cambodian artillery round supporting a Viet Cong attack on myself and another team member. Thanks to CPT Donker, we lived.

Staff Sergeant Daryl K. Stannard, Detachment A-422, 5th Special Forces Group (Green Beret), killed 14 May1966 by a Viet Cong boobytrap on the outpost perimeter.

SSG Bennett and I had been friends at Ft. Bragg NC, before he went to Vietnam and I went to Ethiopia. He was executed for no reason.

CPT Donker was killed supporting SFC Noakes & I, after we were hit by VC. Noakes had gone to reconnoiter the border area. Shortly after, my patrol has hit by heavy fire. The Vietnamese ran, leaving me by myself to find Noakes. I called camp for support and reinforcements. CPT Donker climbed the camp observation tower to direct covering mortar fire for us. Noakes and I finally hooked up, and were able to affect a withdrawal. In the meantime, CPT Donker was struck by an artillery shell, killing him immediately.

SSG Stannard was a friend from Ft. Bragg. We were both demolition (explosives) specialists. He was killed while I was at Camp Cai Cai (Team A-412 location). Upon my tour being over at Cai Cai, I was sent to Camp Vinh Gia (Team A-422), as his replacement (Demolition Sergeant).

He was assigned to 2nd Batalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

Sheriff Dept press release re: Narcotics K-9

Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office K-9
The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office would like to introduce “Buster” to the community. Buster is Dutch Sheppard narcotic detection canine. This is the first canine in over 14 years for the department. The Sheriff’s Office recognized the need for a canine however, funding for the program has always been the determining factor. The funding hurdle was overcome largely in part from a partnership with a local non-profit organization Friends of Calaveras Sheriff Office. Friends of the Sheriff organization stepped up and provided 100% funding for the purchase, training, and equipment needed for the program. Friends of the Sheriff have also pledged to continue their support to the program by assisting with monthly and yearly financial needs of the canine team.

Community Garden work day 5-25-14

We ask our loyal garden volunteers to come out on Sunday at 10 am.   We've the opportunity to pick up at a very reasonable price some heirloom and Ace tomato plants.  Of course, we need to prep the beds into which the plants will go! :)

In addition, we're going to try to burn back some of the weeds that are over-hanging our healthy young veggies.

And, we'll have the weed whacker ready to go as well.
