Runner Sponsored Bill to Help Disabled Veterans Advances - press release

SACRAMENTO – A George Runner proposal to protect California’s disabled veterans won backing from a key legislative panel today, when the Senate Governance and Finance Committee voted 7-0 to back SB 1113. The measure, authored by Senator Steve Knight (R-Antelope Valley), would help ensure that disabled veterans who encounter bureaucratic delays can still claim a key property tax exemption.

“Disabled veterans should not miss out on tax benefits to which they are entitled just because the federal government, for whatever reason, is unable to give them their 100% disability rating in a timely manner,” said Runner. [View video of Runner testimony]

Under California law, veterans who receive a 100% disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) may be eligible for a property tax exemption on the value of their home up to $124,932 or $187,399 in 2014 and equivalent amounts adjusted for inflation in future years. The exemption starts on the date of disability and disabled veterans may claim a refund for up to four years of back taxes paid.

Volunteers at the Food Pantry Distribution Day - working hard

Many volunteers come out on food distribution day, 4-17-14, at the Food Pantry to make the day a seamless success. Those inside, box and bag refrigerated items, cooking ingredients and special bags for seniors. Those outside bag everything from potatoes to dog food, apples to onions. All in anticipation of feeding the 60+ families the food pantry helps each month.

Along the side of the Bridge building the Copper Closet is set up with free clothing to those who need it.

Veterans Deaths extend beyond the battlefield - by Charity Maness Calaveras Enterprise

As the month of March came to a close, a very poignant occasion was celebrated by veterans and military families alike across the U.S.: a zero combat death toll abroad. For the first time since February 2003, the U.S. Central Command confirmed there were no U.S. casualties on foreign soil during the month of March 2014.

While this is something to sincerely celebrate, it is also a time to reflect upon the fact that though no combat-related deaths occurred during March, during that same 31 day period, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, approximately 682 military veterans took their own lives.

Twenty-two veterans per day in the United States committed suicide. That is almost one per hour. The suicide rate for combat veterans is double the civilian population of 14 per 100,000, with veteran suicides totaling 30 per 100,000 people.

On March 27, 1,892 flags were planted on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., representing the number of veterans’ suicides since Jan. 1, 2014.

A large percentage of these unnecessary deaths can be attributed to combat-related issues, from combat trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and other issues that have gone unnoticed or untreated.

Sen. John Walsh of Montana, an Iraq vet and one of only two combat veterans in the Senate, has introduced a bill titled the Suicide Prevention for Amer-ica’s Veterans Act to help combat this pressing issue.

Gov appoints FPPC Chair

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the appointment of Jodi Remke as chairperson of the California Fair Political Practices Commission.

Remke, 48, of Oakland, has been presiding judge at the State Bar Court of California since 2006, where she was hearing judge from 2000 to 2006. She was an attorney with the California State Senate Judiciary Committee from 1997 to 2000, at the Montana Legal Services Association from 1994 to 1996 and at Miller Starr and Regalia from 1991 to 1994. Remke is board president of the National Council of Lawyer Disciplinary Boards. She earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $136,144. Remke is a Democrat.

Church Basement Ladies Return for Sequel at Sierra Rep

After the thrilling success of last year’s production of Church Basement Ladies, Sierra Repertory Theatre is bringing A Second Helping, The Church Basement Ladies Sequel to the Fallon House Theatre April 25 through June 8.

A celebration of the church basement kitchen and the unsung women who work there, the musical comedy picks up the story of the ladies in 1969 – a time of change everywhere, including the basement. Vietnam protests rage, women demand equal pay, and - in their small Minnesota community – a group of Lutheran women wrestle with changes in their lives. There’s the matriarch who runs the show, her next-in-line waiting to take the reins, the young mom-to-be, and the community historian who can rattle off everyone’s lineage -- as soon as her hot flash passes.

SRT audiences first met the ladies last year when they brought the house down in Church Basement Ladies, based on the best-selling book “Growing Up Lutheran” by Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson. Why so popular? You don’t have to be Lutheran to relate.

Youth Groups come out in force for Copper Clean-Up

The annual Copper Pride Day, held 4-19-14, brought out not only locals wanting to help clean up Copper but many youth groups. Present were: Cub Scout Troop 347, Brownie Troop 3305 and Copper Hills 4H.

The effort, lead by Parks and Recs chairpersons Bruce Reid and Dena McAffee, promotes a community ownership of the town's beautification.

Round up time in Copper

Some of us traveling down Little John Road this past week, were lucky enough to be treated to a country round up of the Airola cattle for branding, ear tagging, castrations and inoculations.

Bill Airola allowed me to take some shots of the finely orchestrated event, from round up to treatment. Each member of the team had a specific job to carry out so that the time the calf spent in treatment was extremely short.

I had never been this close before, and I must say, I was impressed with how fluid the operation was. Multiple people carrying out multiple jobs all in an effort to get the calf treated and on its way as quickly as possible. Impressive.

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding

984,966 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped five feet this week and is currently at 940 ft. above sea level and 145 ft. from full. The water is slightly stained with some areas forming mud lines. The average water temperature is 62-68 degrees and rising daily. The boat launch ramps on the Glory Hole side have been moved back out to the end of the point which makes for a very short walk.

Trout: Slow. The trout has been tough and very few fish are being caught. The lake level is dropping and the water temperature is warming. This will push the trout from the shallows out to deeper/cooler water. Try to find areas with clearer water that are protected from the wind and have deep water access. Bank fishing has been tough with most of the trout moving away from the shoreline. If you do choose to fish for trout from the shore, try fishing near Glory Hole Point and near the 49-bridge because the main river channel and cooler water is close. For bait try nightcrawlers, or chartreuse or rainbow garlic scented Power Bait. Trolling anglers have been catching a few fish while trolling over deep water on the main lake. To target these fish try using downriggers or leadcore line, 30-60' deep over 150-200' of water. The fish are relating to the old river channel and deep water. They will be in cooler water areas during the hotter summer months. Brighter colored baits have been working best. Orange, chartreuse and firetiger will work for browns and rainbows. When fishing the main lake and deep water it is a good idea to have a couple lines out that are targeting brown trout. There have been many really nice browns caught and released in the last few weeks. Try rolling shad or trolling large jointed plugs or swim baits. A good area for browns is out in front of the dam/spillway area or between the bridges. It is also a good idea to add plenty of scent and remember to reapply throughout the day. We do encourage catch and release for the brown trout as The Department of Fish and Game will no longer be planting them. Carefully measure, weigh and photograph trophy fish and send us pictures and information.

The Calaveras County Department of Public Works, Integrated Waste Management is pleased to announce our Tire Waste Amnesty Days. Dispose of and recycle up to 9 tires for free during our “Amnesty Days.”

This event will be held for one weekend only.

Saturday & Sunday, May 3^rd & 4^th, 2014 at the following locations.

· Rock Creek Solid Waste Facility, Milton 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

· Red Hill Yard Waste Area, Vallecito 9:00 am – 5:30 pm

· Wilseyville Yard Waste Area, Wilseyville 9:00 am – 5:30 pm

· Gambi Disposal, San Andreas 9:00 am – 5:30 pm

This event is open to Calaveras & Alpine County residents with proper identification* and each household will be allowed to dispose of up to 9 tires**without an exemption. If you will have 10 to 20 tires, please call Calaveras County Environmental Health at 754-6399 for information on obtaining an Exemption Authorization. This exemption must be presented with the load at the amnesty event.

*Proof of residency will be required, either with a current driver’s license showing a Calaveras or Alpine County address or a copy of your current tax bill, which shows a property related solid waste fee.

** California State Transportation laws limit the number of tires you can haul to 9 tires. Any loads with 10-20 tires must obtain an exemption or the amnesty waiver will not be applicable.

Please note the Tire Amnesty fee waiver is not applicable to businesses; tractor tires; tires with rims or for loads larger than 20 tires.

(COPPEROPOLIS, Calif.) – Copperopolis Town Square – the events, shopping and entertainment gathering place in Calaveras County – will host the 14th annual “Hot Copper Car Show” on Saturday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
