Calaveras Arts Council Announces Ovations 2014 Schedule and Performing Artists

For over 30 years, Calaveras Arts Council has brought a variety of concerts to the rural residents and guests of the Gold Country.  Ovations 2014 Performing Arts Series features five high quality, affordable performances at Dr. Elliott Smart Performing Arts Center located at Bret Harte High School, 323 Highway 49, in Angels Camp.  Four of the performances are on a Sunday at 3:00 pm and one is on Saturday at 2:00pm. 

This year’s lineup is:

Burn Suspension Lifted in Several Counties, Permits Required with Restricted Burn Hours

San Andreas – On Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 8 a.m. CAL FIRE will lift the burn suspension for several counties.  This includes the counties of Calaveras, Tuolumne, and the eastern portions of San Joaquin and Stanislaus that are within the State Responsibility Area. 

CAL FIRE burn permits will be required and burning will be permitted with restricted burn hours of 7 p.m. to 8 a.m., on “Permissive Burn Days” as established by the Air Pollution Control District in each county.  In Calaveras County burning on property five acres or more in size requires a permit from the Air Pollution Control District.  In Tuolumne County clearing two acres or more of vegetation requires a permit from the Air Pollution Control District. 

CAL FIRE Unit Chief Josh White reminds everyone, “While burning will be allowed during permissive burn days with restricted burn hours in effect, burn carefully.  Even though the forecast calls for rain and temperatures are cooler, vegetation remains dry. To limit the threat of large and damaging fires, we need the continued support of each citizen within the four-county area of the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit of CAL FIRE.” With changing weather conditions CAL FIRE continues to staff 15 engines and all CAL FIRE stations remain open in those counties. 

Burn permit restrictions:

·         Pile size 4 feet X 4 feet with 10 feet bare mineral soil clearance around pile

·         Remain in attendance

·         Have access to water

·         DO NOT burn on days forecasted to have high or gusty winds

It is your responsibility to check burn day status by calling your local Air Pollution Control District with jurisdiction over your area.

Attempted murder of a Peace Officer at CA State Prison Sacramento under investigation

FOLSOM – California State Prison-Sacramento (CSP-SAC) officials are investigating the attempted murder of a correctional officer that occurred 11-18-13 in one of the maximum-security units.

On November 18, 2013, at approximately 8 a.m., inmate Alberto Cortez, 22, tried to murder a 40-year-old correctional officer by repeatedly slashing him with an inmate-made weapon.  A second inmate tried to attack officers who responded to the incident. Cortez who has been in prison since December 23, 2010, is serving a 15-years-to-life sentence from Los Angeles County for attempted first-degree murder and receiving stolen property.

SRT Youth theatre presents Jason and the Argonauts

Sierra Repertory Theatre is giving a sneak preview of its new youth theatre program with its production of Jason and the Argonauts, a 45-minute musical comedy written by new SRT Education Director Ralph Krumins (Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story). Based on the ancient Greek hero, the fast paced show for children will feature three actors playing over 20 roles and will play at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Fallon House Theatre in Columbia on December 7, 8, 14 and 15.  Tickets are $5 for children and $10 for adults. 

Travel back in time to days when gods rules the sky, monsters roamed the earth and every warrior was a brand new hero. Jason goes on a quest to bring home the legendary Golden Fleece. With the help of the audience and brave Argonauts such as Orpheus and Hercules, he will conquer many dangers before he claims his prize. An abundance of audience participation makes Jason and the Argonauts fun for all ages.

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,030,405 acre-feet of water.  The lake level rose very little this week and is currently at 947 ft. above sea level and 139 ft. from full.  The water is fairly clear in some areas and slightly stained in others.  The water temperature will be cooling a bit each week until the lake turns over.  The lake has cooled some and is 60-66 degrees depending on what part of the lake you are fishing.  The docks have been moved on Glory Hole Point.  This makes for an easy launch and very short walk to and from the parking lot.

Sonora PD Press release re: Auto theft arrest

13 November 2013, at approx. 9:35 am, a subject came into the lobby of the Sonora Police Department and reported that his vehicle had just been stolen. The victim told an officer that he had parked his BMW convertible in the Rodeway Inn Parking lot and left the keys in the ignition, while he worked on a project at Sonora Day’s Inn. Approx. a half an hour later, he observed someone driving off in his vehicle.

Sheriff Dept press release re:Sheriff’s Department Investigating Deaths of Two Brothers

(Valley Springs, CA) On 11/12/13 at 4:00 pm, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center received a 911 call regarding a medical distress at a residence on the 5000 block of Rippon Road in Valley Springs. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, and upon arrival they found two 22 year old twin brothers who appeared to be in respiratory distress. The deputies initiated CPR and requested EMS personnel to respond. The brothers, who suffered from a long-term illness and were under the care of a doctor, were connected to breathing ventilators for life support. The brothers were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Sierra Rep 'It's a Wonderful Life' opens November 15, 2013

It’s a Wonderful Life at Sierra Rep

Sierra Repertory Theatre brings the spirit of the holiday season to its East Sonora stage with Joe Landry’s live 1940s radio broadcast version of the beloved film It’s A Wonderful Life, playing November 15 to December 22. Seven actors play dozens of characters, while a foley artist produces the sound effects, all in front of their live studio audience.

“So many people have commented on how much this show is like the film, and they really like that,” said actor Tom Andrew, who played the role of George Bailey for six seasons at Cygnet Theatre in San Diego and will reprise the role at Sierra Rep this winter. “I have also had many people come up to me who don’t like the film but love this show. To me that says a lot about the format of the show.”

On Saturday November 9, 2013 Copperopolis Town Square hosted their annual Taste of  Holidays  wine tasting event featuring Calaveras Wines and treats from Calaveras restaurants and catering companies.
