Memorial Day flag raising ceremony TODAY 5-27-13 Coperopolis Cemetery

The James D Piper VFW Post 12118 of Copperopolis will be holding a community flag raising ceremony 5-27-13 at 10am at the Copperopolis Cemetery.
The event, open to the whole community, will be followed by the placing of American flags on the veterans graves at rest within the cemetery.

Following the ceremony the VFW Ladies Auxiliary will be holding a community potluck at Blackcreek Park. Open to the community.

Memorial Day - a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

Bret Harte students listen to living history

Wearing their pressed uniforms, veterans representing World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War era filed into the Bret Harte High School gym to participate in Bret Harte’s annual Veteran Oral History Project.
The project was started in 1997 by Bret Harte High School history teacher Jennifer Truman with the desire to teach outside the box.

“The old school way of teaching, opening a book and simply reading,” was not engaging her students, said Truman. As she brainstormed how to connect young people to history, to make it real, she realized that she herself remembered the many stories her grandfather had told her as a young girl and how those stories were still fresh in her mind. It was then that she knew oral history would bring history alive for her students.

The crowds were lined up back to Dr French's Dentist office for the fresh FREE produce distribution on May 24, 2013.
The event was hosted by the Resource Connection Food pantry.

Welcome to the Country

So you’ve decided to move to the country where Memorial Day is not just another day to have a bar-b-que.

In the fast and frenzied world of political correctness some of our country’s more traditional holidays seem to have become glossed over with the simple promise and expectation of a paid day off, block parties, and fun in the sun. Sometimes the true meaning of the holiday itself seems to get lost amid all the activity.

Out here in the country we have not forgotten what Memorial Day stands for. It’s not just another paid holiday, another day to bar-b-que, and play in the sun.

It’s a day to remember.

March Against Monsanto comes to Murphys

Ciara Owens, local woman and part owner of Backyard Bistro in Murphys, began the local March against Monsanto event in an effort to educate the public about the "control big corporations have over what you put in your body and what is put in your child's body...we live in a free country, we can't stop them from operating a business but we can hope to stop the monopoly and have them be truthful about what we put in our bodies."

Backyard Bisto walks the walk with a goal of using "47 % local to Calaveras county products." However being a coffee shop and coffee does not grow in Calaveras county the bistro purchases coffee from outside the county yet purchases local "above organic standards products" whenever possible. They are even working with local ranchers to carry range fed beef with a USDA certification, that remain hormone free and antibiotic free.

"Many preservatives created have caused cancers", this can occur when we "mess with nature and create synthetic products."

While over 200 people have told Ciara they will attend the event, she is not sure if a march will occur, but would be happy if one did. "I am really hopeful that people will come out and sign the petition to create a voice to stand against the large corporations."

"This march is about pushing forward an energy source bringing to light what is really going on with your food products."

On May 25, 2013, from 7 am to 3 pm, you can stop by the Backyard Bistro in Murphys to sign a petition to support local farmers, proper labeling of GMO foods, and against government protection of Monsanto. 

" Please join us on this day for a free cup of coffee! Petitions and America will March at 2pm."

Sheriff Dept Press release re:Sheriff’s Office is Requesting Assistance in Locating Missing Woman

(San Andreas, CA) The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office is asking for assistance in located a missing 75 year old woman.

On May 24, 2013 the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office received a missing persons report concerning an elderly female adult. Fay Burford, age 75, of Murphys, California was last seen at a scheduled appointment in Walnut Creek, CA on May 23, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. She was expected to arrive back at her Murphys home on the same date, but has not been seen or heard from since leaving her appointment. Mrs. Burford is driving a faded silver or taupe colored 1996 Jeep Cherokee, license plate # 4YMC949. Records indicate that her bank card was used in Colinga, CA at 6:30 p.m. and in Lake Isabelle at 11:30 p.m. on May 23rd.

At this time the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office has no reason to believe that foul play is involved. The sheriff’s office is asking that if anyone should see Fay Burford, or know of her whereabouts to immediately call the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office at 209-754-6500.

Vegetation fire Baker Lane 5-24-13

A report of a vegetation/grass fire was made at approximately 2:17 pm.
Witnesses at the scene reported that a vehicle exhaust system in the high grass was the cause of the fire. The fire spread to a near-by burn pile and jumped a small rock wall.
Approximately 1 acre was burned, fire is contained and mop up is in progress.

With the Memorial Day weekend approaching, CAL FIRE reminds all Californians about the increased fire danger this year and asks everyone of to be extra careful in the outdoors.

• 1 3-3 1/2-pound boneless pork loin
• Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper
• 1 cup whole grain mustard
• 1/4 cup mustard powder
• 1/2 cup olive oil, divided
• 2 cups farro
• 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
• 1 tablespoon caraway seeds, coarsely chopped

Stand-up Comedy lands some solid laughs

On May 17, 2013 stand-up comedians took the stage at the Sports Pub to once again bring unleashed laughter to the folks of Copper. The comedians, brought to us by Class Act Comedy, were fresh off the Black Oak Casino stage.

Local comedian Julia Fretwell took the stage first, priming the crowd well with her rendition of 'getting in the mood' at an older age with multiple ailments. Note the pic.

Electronics Waste recycling Event

The CHS Earth Club would like to invite you to get rid of your old, broken electronics to be recycled! This event will take place on Saturday June 1 from 9am - 1pm in the lower parking lot of Calaveras High school. E-Waste contains a variety of toxins which leech into the environment when thrown into landfills and not properly disposed of. Please bring the items to CHS to be recycled. This event offers you an easy way to recycle any electronic device that is not useful or is no longer working. Such items include televisions, computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, radios, record players, tape players, CD players, DVD players, telephones (landlines and cell), answering machines, copiers. Pretty much anything electronic! Items NOT able to be recycled are batteries, smoke detectors, x-ray equipment, fluorescent lights and ballasts. All you need to do is bring your e-waste items to Calaveras High School on June 1 and drop them off, no cost to you. Onsite Electronics Recycling will be gathering the e-waste and hauling it off. Please take advantage of this local, convenient event in San Andreas to help ensure electronics are recycled and not tossed into our landfills. The members of the Calaveras High Earth Club would like to thank the community members for continuing efforts to recycle not only electronics but also glass, plastic, aluminum and plastic bags.

Death Trap Motorcycle Club hits Copper

After Johnathan, 'president' of Death Traps, completed his time in the Marine Corp he came home to Sonora and found a new passion...motorcycles, to be more clear...old motorcycles. He and his brother would spend hours working on them, riding them, and coveting them. Soon they reached out to their friends and found many like minded people. They figured the best way to thoroughly enjoy their new found passion was to start a motorcycle club...so began the Death Traps Motorcycle Club.

The members include all of Johnathan's childhood friends an some hes made a long the way.

Proudly wearing the #13 patch on his leather vest Johnathan is anything but unlucky. He has organized the Old Corner Death Traps event for five years running now and sees no end in sight.

As the friends married and had families and moved away it became more difficult to spend time together. So each Frog Jump weekend the friends, old and new, from as far away as San Diego descend upon the Old Corner for a weekend of friendship, motorcycles, fun and music.

Three live bands were scheduled for this past weekend and tents were set up throughout the grounds.
