Campaign Statement

A Leader, For A Change

  I welcome the opportunity to serve as a leader in the county where I was raised.  Calaveras is a county with great potential and great people.  I would be honored to be a part of that vision of greatness on the front line.
  My leadership experience as Council Member and Mayor with the City of Angels and as an Executive Director of a senior living community has given me an understanding of managing budgets, prioritizing projects and establishing long range plans that would be valuable to Calaveras County.
  Over 25 years of management experience gives me a wide-ranging view of serving from a grassroots perspective to a regional one.  I will work with my colleagues to seek solutions to problems in our county such as creating jobs and public safety.
  It is also my desire to bring honesty and integrity to the table that will build new levels of trust in our county leadership and bridge gaps that have cause citizens to distrust local government.
  By voting for me you will get a leader that is relevant, holds a high standard of integrity, and has the heart and desire to work for the citizens of Calaveras County.
  I would appreciate your vote for a new County Supervisor on Tuesday, June 5, 2012.

Copperopolis Homecoming Parade 2012 Grand Marshals announced

     For many years, these two hard working ladies, Justine Nantelle and Nancy Dahlberg have worked as volunteers for the Copperopolis Community Center working such fund raisers as the annual Wine Tasting in January and Homecoming in June.  For the Copperopolis Elementary School Historical Tours, sponsored by the Community Center, you will see them dressed in period clothing and giving out cookies to the children on the tour.  They are always there to help whenever they are needed. 

      Not only do they volunteer for the CCC, but Justine also supports The Volunteer Fireman’s Association, and The Lions Club. If there is a happening in Copperopolis, you will probably see one or both of these ladies doing their thing, helping the community and doing it with a smile on their face. They deserve to be recognized for their support within our community.

 Many local lakes have great crappie fishing.  Learn the secret to catching these tasty slabsides.

May 13 - fly fishing local streams and lakes
 Learn fly fishing basics- try your hand at casting a fly rod. Learn what flies to use, and best presentation.  While most fly anglers target streams, flies are very effective for lake fishing, too.

Statement by Assemblymember Olsen on Speaker’s Proposal to Fund the Commission on the Status of Women

SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto, issued the following statement in response to Speaker Perez’ announcement that the Assembly will fund the Commission on the Status of Women:

“I applaud the Speaker for his willingness to reallocate Assembly funding to other areas of the budget. However, at a time when teachers are receiving pink slips and we are releasing prisoners early, why would we use this money to fund the Commission on the Status of Women instead of a priority program? That is beyond comprehension.”

Jobs Bill Advances to Assembly with Bipartisan Support

SACRAMENTO – A bill to boost job growth for new manufacturing businesses in California passed with bipartisan support yesterday in the Assembly Committee on Revenue & Taxation.

AB 1530, which is joint-authored by Assemblymembers Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) and Kristin Olsen (R-Modesto), creates Clean Manufacturing Zones around the state to attract new manufacturing businesses to California and encourages existing businesses to stay and grow, by eliminating regulatory delays and providing tax incentives to buy new manufacturing equipment and locate here in California.

The Tiger jump on the Red Sox's early and coast to 8-2 win

The Tigers refused to relinquish the lead after grabbing it early against the Red Sox's, recording an 8-2 victory on Monday at Frog Town..
With six runs in the first three innings, the Tigers left no doubt about the eventual outcome.
A walk by Cody Roessler, a two-run single by Joseph Borello, and during the second inning helped the Tigers put some runs on the board early.

Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 12118 takes the District by storm

According to Rhonda Montgomery past District 13 president with 52 years of service to the Ladies Auxiliary "no one to my knowledge has ever formed a VFW Ladies Auxiliary in such a short amount of time."

The very first meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 12118 was held March 18, 2012 and the installation of officers ceremony was held just one week later. With 20 members on the roster and more signing up each week "this group promises to be a wonderful community asset."

The announcement was made regarding the amazing achievement and speed with which the Auxiliary was formed at the Sunday April 15, 2012, meeting. Present at the meeting was a representative from  District 13 (which includes 6 counties Amador, Tuolumne, San Juaquin, Calaveras, Merced and Stanislaus) and a representative from the Stae of California. Kathy Smith District 13 President and Shirley Calvert California Jr Vice President were thrilled with the formation and the energy with which the group moved forward.

New Melones Fishing Report

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,950,271 acre-feet of water. The lake level has dropped about 1 ½ feet in the last two weeks, and is currently at 1048 ft. above sea level and 40 ft. from full.  Water temps have reached up to 60 degrees.  The water temperature is really warming up, and will continue to do so with the warm weather.  Lake is slightly stained, with mud lines forming around the shore on windy days.

Trout:  The bite is still good for both bank anglers and trollers, but the sudden heat wave last week slowed the fishing a bit.  The water temperature in the shallows is warming up faster than the main lake, pushing the trout out into deeper, cooler water.

“While other health concerns are more prominent in the media, we tend to forget that heart disease is the #1 killer of women over the age of 25,” stated Patti Monczewski, Interim Hospital President. “Working with the Soroptimist, our shared goal is to ensure that every woman in the Calaveras Community has a comprehensive cholesterol test.”

San Andreas – Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at 8AM, the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) will require burning permits within State Responsibility Areas of Tuolumne County, Calaveras County, Eastern Stanislaus County and Eastern San Joaquin County. 

Veteran's Courts on the rise in California - not in the foothills ~ by, Charity Maness

Veterans Courts are on the rise in California with nine Veterans Courts currently operating and San Mateo County unveiling a new Veterans Court by summer 2012. These courts are in response to a rise in veterans appearing before courts to face charges stemming from mental illness or substance abuse. Research has shown that the traditional 'drug and mental' health courts do not always meet the needs of the veterans as many veterans are entitled to treatment through the Veteran's Administration.

Penal Code section 1170.9, amended by the California State Legislature in 2006, allows the courts to divert into a program any veteran who was a member “of the military forces of the United States who served in combat” and “suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, or psychological problems as a result of that service.”  Veterans Court is a collaborative court/treatment court. It is a post-plea program, not a diversion program.

Eligibility requirements must be met and exclusions are made for violent crimes. Defendants are placed on probation for 18 months and are required to complete whatever VA programs are deemed appropriate for each individual. It is a collaborative process including a judge, representatives from the probation department, mental health and veteran’s administration, a district attorney, a public defender, and a liaison between the court and the V.A. The process not only helps to catch the combat veterans that fall through the judicial cracks ensuring they receive the services they are entitled to receive as veterans but relieves some of the financial strain on treatment from the County level to the Federal level through the use of programs offered through the VA.

Copper kids place well in Countywide Spelling Bee

On April 19, 2012 many children, 6th through 9th grade, in Calaveras County came to the countywide spelling bee held at the Calaveras River Academy / Mountain Oaks in hopes of bringing home a win for, not only themselves, but for their school as well.

Two winners of the spelling bee were our own Copper kids.

WWII Veteran Walter Siebeneicher memorial 4-22-12

Walter Frederick Siebeneicher died Monday, April 2, 2012, at Sonora Regional Hospital. He was 88. A native of Soledad, Mr. Siebeneicher was born Sept. 12, 1923. He was the first of four children born to Ora Helena Siebeneicher and Adolph Ennal Siebeneicher, who immigrated to the United States from Germany in the early 1900s. He was a machinist at Varian Associates in Palo Alto for years. He served as an interpreter with the Army Ranger Combat Infantry Unit during World War II. He was in Salerno, Sicily, Rome, Arno, Southern France and Rhineland and central Europe. He received a Purple Heart, Distinguish Unit Badge and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze Arrowhead.

He enjoyed making wind chimes, fishing, rock collecting, gold panning and gardening.
He is survived by his brothers Adolph and George Siebeneicher; children Wernau Maltba, Elyssa and Glen Emerick, Walter F. Jr. and Cam Siebeneicher, Robert and Cheryl Bovee; the Garliepp and Gabler families; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and his friend Audrey Moffatt. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Emilie Gabler Siebeneicher.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at the Copper Cove Lake Tulloch Owners Association, 920 Black Creek Drive, Copperopolis.

Letter to the Gazette, re: Walt Ball memorial

We attended the service for Walt Ball, Ralph going as representing the VFW, opening song "The Lord's Prayer" was sung by past supervisor Russ Thomas, eulogy was spoken by Jack Cox, attendance by many folks, from his years in LAFD a flag that was flown on his old ship was presented to Virginia, his son Mark gave everyone a wonderful glimpse through slideshow of his wit and his talents. Walt threw himself body and soul into his commitment to family, his job, his friends and neighbors, the local fire department, and his church. His daughter Ginny offered a video of home movies of his years, Johnny Jordan offered a violin solo, Laurie Milbridge sang a beautiful version of "Amazing Grace"and much more.

Through and through, this was the most interesting service we have ever attended, with everyone reuniting from years past and present, laughing--which Walt would have loved, crying--but with all honor due a man who left this world better than he entered it.

Our daughter Aya knew him better than we did, going to school with his granddaughter Nicole at Bret Harte, and couldn't attend, and, I think, thousands of others would have loved to be there [he touched many many lives], but in these times we honored a man we were humbled to have known, from our town of Copper.

 

Historic Armory building hosted a potluck reception for everyone afterwards which we weren't able to stay for.

The good news? No tornados…yet. Seeing as how that last time I visited this little slice of Kentucky known as Irvine (pronounced Ervin) the local postmaster (who now knows be by name..that being ‘the gal from Caleefornee) said, “I knew y’all were headin’ into town on account of the bad weather” I am grateful to not be the bearer of bad weather…this trip. You might have to read that long sentence again. I know I did.
