Sheriff Kuntz met with other law enforcement RE:Possibility of Death Row Inmate Wes Shermantine returning to the area to identify victims body locations

Representatives from the FBI and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation as well as San Joaquin County District Attorney James Willett, San Joaquin County Sheriff Steve Moore and Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz met in Stockton on Friday to discuss the possibility of allowing death row inmate Wesley Shermantine Jr., to come back to San Joaquin County.
The proposal would allow Shermantine to come in for a day and identify the locations where he and childhood friend Loren Herzog buried the remains of their victims, including those of Clements resident Cyndi Vanderheiden and Stockton resident Chevy Wheeler.

Folic acid, a B vitamin, is needed for the growth and repair of cells in the body.  It is important for overall health.  Many women do not know that it is also an important way to prevent certain birth defects.  It can help prevent birth defects of the brain and spine in the baby if a woman starts taking it several months before getting pregnant.

Burning Suspension Lifted

San Andreas – Effective 8:00 AM, Friday, January 20, 2012, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) will lift the suspension of burning on private lands within the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit. This includes the counties of Calaveras, Tuolumne, and those eastern portions of San Joaquin and Stanislaus that are within the State Responsibility Area. 

Lifting of the burning suspension also applies to lands within the Direct Protection Area (DPA) of the Stanislaus National Forest. Open burning will be allowed on permissive burn days as established by the Air Pollution Control District in each county.  Fire weather will be monitored and if the need arises restricted burning hours or suspension will be reissued. CAL FIRE is not requiring burn permits at this time.  Due to the recent rainfall and the projected forecast for more rain improves the conditions for burning vegetation created by working on 100 foot defensible space.  Clear all flammable material and vegetation from the outer edge of the pile, keep a water supply close to the burning site. 

Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Doubles its Professional Team Serving Angels Camp

SAN ANDREAS, CA – Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital (MTSJH) Interim Hospital President Patti Monczewski announced that Dr. Steven Mills, nurse practitioner Carla St. Myers, and Dr. Frederick Osborne have joined the Angels Camp Family Medical Center.
“We are delighted to expand our commitment in Angels Camp,” said Monczewski, adding “Angels Camp was home to the first of our five Family Medical Centers.”
Dr. Steven Mills received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from University of California San Diego, and his medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean, British West Indies. He completed both an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Rochester and a Family Practice residency at Wheeling Hospital in Wheeling, West Virginia. Dr. Mills joined Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital in August 2011.

The Government of Iraq has temporarily detained hundreds of multi national private contractors, some US contractors, in the past weeks mostly for visa or weapons registration violations. The detainment can last 24-96 hours. Iraqi agencies seek to control free movement of foreign contractors. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been asked to intervene, but is unable to affect a change in what an Iraqi businessman described as a "turf war."
Three Departments within the Iraqi Government are vying for control of the contractors; defense, internal security and transportation.
Since the withdrawal of US troops the civilian casualty count from Al-Qaeda bombs and attacks, has exceeded 200 civilians.

Barking Dog Sparks Nuisance Violation Charges

Residents of Copper Cove subdivision in Copperopolis claim complaints about a barking dog were called in to Animal Services beginning as early as April 2011. After multiple contacts with the dogs owners by Animal Services and citation issued the “barking did not cease.” According to one complainant a petition was signed by 6 residents on 9-30-11. Another petition was signed and hand delivered to Animal Services on 12-17-11.

Following the last dated petition Sgt Murray of the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Division informed the petitioning residents that the signed petition changed the “infraction crime to a misdemeanor crime.” Sgt Murray further stated “I will prepare the report on this and send to the District Attorney’s office for prosecution.”

Copperopolis Family Medical Center Hours of Operation Change

SAN ANDREAS, CA – Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Interim President Patti Monczewski announced that the Copperopolis Family Medical Center will undergo scheduling changes, beginning Jan. 23, 2012. The Family Medical Center will be open three days a week, opening 30 minutes earlier for lab draws. closing for lunch 12:00 – 1:00)

"Serving the families in Copperopolis and the surrounding areas is a vital part of our healthcare mission," said Monczewski. "Both Dr. Nadler and nurse practitioner Marty Eppenberger will continue to provide patient care at the Copperopolis Family Medical Center. Likewise, Dean White, LCSW, and Tim Rourke, Ph.D, remain available for counseling services. We remain committed to providing quality healthcare and excellent customer service as we make adjustments to best meet the volume at our five Family Medical Centers."

Effective January 23, 2012, the hours of the Copperopolis Family Medical Center will be changing as follows.

Mexico Lindo Hopes to Reopen Soon

When Mexico Lindo's owner Ester came in to work Tuesday morning to prep for the days meals she was stunned at the sight that lay before her. The restaurant she and her husband had worked so hard to build was flooded.
Parts of the ceiling had fallen in and the restaurant had flooded when during the night, with below freezing temperatures, pipes in the ceiling had ruptured.
According to the Servo-Pro technician on site there were three pipes that had broken and the restaurant had been 3/4 flooded. He pointed out that the building at the end of the strip mall on Copper Cove drive, previously housing Trinity Mortgage, had been "100% flooded." He also stated that the cold snap had affected five counties and many homes and businesses were damaged.
Ester is optimistic that they will re-open by Wednesday or Thursday next week (1-25 or 1-26). She was also thankful for all the customers that stopped by to extend their well wishes.

Governor's State of the State speech

SACRAMENTO – In his 2012 State of the State speech, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. said California is “on the mend” and laid out an ambitious agenda for economic growth in the year ahead.

As required by the state constitution, I am reporting to you this morning on the condition of our state.

Putting it as simply as I can, California is on the mend. Last year, we were looking at a structural deficit of over $20 billion. It was a real mess. But you rose to the occasion and together we shrunk state government, reduced our borrowing costs and transferred key functions to local government, closer to the people. The result is a problem one fourth as large as the one we confronted last year.

Sonora PD Press releases re:drug arrest

17 January 2012, at approx. 5:55 pm, Officers from the Sonora Police Department responded to the parking lot of Sonora Regional Medical Center regarding a physical fight in progress.
During the Officers investigation, they contacted Adam Hoskins, 25 of Jamestown and Ashley Reiser, 28 of Columbia. Reiser gave officers a false name because she knew she had an outstanding warrant. She was later identified and arrested on the outstanding warrant. She was also found to be in the possession of a hypodermic needle.

COPPEROPOLIS - In April, Charity L. Maness received a battered shoebox of 44-year-old love letters that changed the direction of her writing career.

Maness, who lives in Copperopolis, until then had specialized in romance novels such as "Prince Charming," published in 2010, and humor such as "From Positive Test to Empty Nest," published in 2009.

The letters in the shoebox had no happy ending.

James D. Piper wrote them to his wife, Michelle, during the final months of his life as he went through basic training and then served in the U.S. Army's 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam. He wrote the last letter on April 9, 1967.

By 1-21-12 10% of US chemical weapons stockpile remains

Wednesday January 18, 2012 marked the final destruction of the mustard agent filled projectiles stored at the Deseret Chemical Depot; to be destroyed by incineration. The remaining stockpile of Lewisite, a vesicant/blister agent, is slated for liquid incineration on Saturday 1-21-12.

The US declared, in 1985, a stockpile of 31,500 tons of chemical weapons. The mission to destroy the US chemical stockpile has been a 16 year $3 billion mission. After the liquid incineration of the Lewisite on Saturday, the Government declares that only 10% of the originally declared 31,500 tons will remain. The remaining 10% is awaiting destruction, with no completion date set.

Copper Cougars win against Michaelson

The Copperopolis Elementary School's boys basketball team hosted a game on Tuesday night 1-17-12 against Michaelson Elementary.  The Cougars managed to pull out a win with a final score of 28-18.  Top scorers for Copper were Chase Collins with 12 points and Johnny Miramontes with 6 points!  Next game is Thursday, January 19th at 3:30pm against CFLC.

John Banuelos, 67, of Elk Grove, has been appointed to the California Boating and Waterways Commission. Banuelos worked at the California Conservation Corps from 1997 to 2004 and from 1977 to 1992 in multiple positions, including program and evaluation manager. He was the executive officer at the Youth Offender Parole Board from 1996 to 1997 and director of the Department of Boating and Waterways from 1992 to 1996. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Banuelos is a Democrat.

Sonora PD Press Release re:car jacking arrest

17 January 2012, at approx. 4:00 pm, the Sonora Police Department responded to an attempted carjacking at the AM/PM mini mart on Pesce Way. The victim told officers that she was parked at the pumps preparing to pay for fuel, when she was approached by a male subject. The subject told her, “this is a carjacking, give me the keys to your car.”
At this point the victim could see that the suspect was holding a knife in his right hand. Then for some unknown reason the suspect dropped the knife to the pavement. The victim quickly stepped on the knife. However, the suspect pushed the victim off of the knife and retrieved it then he walked away from the gas station. The victim was able to give officers a clothing description of the suspect. The victim also gave a physical description of the suspect which matched that of the carjacking suspect from the night before.
At approx. 5:00 pm, an Officer observed a subject on S. Washington St. whose clothing matched the clothing description of the suspect of the attempted carjacking. The subject also matched the same physical description.

Belva Bristol retires after 33 years of service to CFPD

After 33 years of service to the Copperopolis Fire Protection District, Office Manager Belva Bristol has officially retired.

"I will stay involved with the fire department." She said through teary eyes at the small award ceremony held Thursday January 12, 2012 where she was awarded a plaque for her years of service and a celebratory cake was cut and enjoyed.

Belva was voted as Calaveras County Senior of the Year in 2009 for her many contributions to the community and surrounding areas. Belva sits on many committees from the Copperopolis Community Center preserving Copperopolis History to the Copperopolis Friends of the Library promoting literacy and supporting the local library. Belva's face has become a common sight at almost ALL community events as a behind the scenes busy bee.

Belva still plans on staying involved with the Copperopolis Volunteer Firefighter and Auxilary Association, helping where needed. She is also spending a bit of time helping the new chief, Jeff Milar, transition to absorb her duties under his job duties umbrella.

Freezing temperatures cause broken water pipes

All over Copper people are suffering from broken water pipes as the weather dropped below 20 degrees last night.
External pipes, internal pipes and in some instances above ground wells suffered from the damaging cold.

The following is information from the American Red Cross for preventing and thawing frozen pipes:

Why pipe freezing is a problem

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the "strength" of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break. Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Also, pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.
Pipe freezing is a particular problem in warmer climates where pipes often run through uninsulated or underinsulated attics or crawl spaces.

(San Andreas, CA) On 1/14/2012 Calaveras Sheriffs Deputies received a report of a vehicle burglary at the

fishing access off of Highway 12 west of San Andreas. The vehicle's window was shattered, which enabled the

suspects to gain entry. A purse containing credit cards, keys, prescription medications, and other items was

stolen.

Angels Camp PD Press Release re:arrests

On January 14^th, 2012 the Angels Camp PD received information from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office that a debit card taken in an auto burglary in San Andreas was used at several locations in Angels Camp. One of the locations where the card was used was the Save Mart grocery store.

At approximately 7:25 PM, on January 14^th, 2012, a manager at Save Mart called and reported that the same subjects that were in the store earlier using the debit card returned and were attempting another transaction with the stolen card. Officers responded and detained Perry and Bulcao, and began the investigation into their use of the stolen debit card.

Video footage obtained from Save Mart showed Perry and Bulcao in the store together making purchases, as well as a male subject that used the stolen card for a transaction at the “Red Box” outlet inside Save Mart. That male subject was later identified as Clark.

The investigation led officers to the Worldmark Wyndham Resorts time shares, where Bulcao, Perry and Clark were guests. Clark was contacted there and all three subjects were ultimately arrested and booked into the county jail.

All three subjects were arrested on charges related to the possession of stolen property and criminal conspiracy. Clark was booked on additional charges related to the possession of methamphetamine and narcotic paraphernalia. Perry and Clark are facing charges related to the fraudulent use of the debit card. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office added charges related to the vehicle burglary that occurred in San Andreas.

Copper Cougars Boys Basketball - win 2 out of 3

Last week in Copper Basketball the boys had quite a week playing 3 games!  On Monday they played the Stockton Wildcats.  It was a very tough game and although the boys played hard until the end, it was not enough.  The Wildcats beat our Cougars 8-34.  Top scorer of the game was Joseph Miramontes with 4 points.  On Tuesday the boys hosted Sutter Creek.  This time they were ready!  The Copper Cougars beat Sutter Creek 33-15.  Top scorers for Copper were Chase Collins with 10 points and Bryson Kelly with 6 points. All boys on the team scored during the Sutter Creek game which, according to Coach Troy Welch, is very exciting and promising.  Finally, the boys finished the week strong.  They traveled to Arnold to play Hazel Fisher and won the game with a final score of 34-20.  Top Scorers were Chase Collins with 14 points and Joseph Miramontes with 7 points. 

 

 

This week the boys will host two home games.  On Tuesday, January 17th, they will play Michealson at 3:30pm and on Thursday, January 19th they will play CFLC at 3:30pm.  Come cheer on our boys!

CHP Teen Driving Class - Start Smart coming to Copper

START SMART

San Andreas, CA – The leading cause of death for Americans 15-20 years old is motor vehicle collisions, (According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the CHP’s goal is to reduce the death rate among teenagers as the result of these collisions.

In order to address this alarming trend, the CHP developed a program called Start Smart.  Start Smart is aimed at helping newly licensed and future licensed teenage drivers understand the critical responsibilities of driving and to understand that accidents do happen, but collisions are 100 percent preventable.

The primary objective of Start Smart is to provide teens and their parent/guardians with an interactive safe driving awareness class which will illustrate how poor choices behind the wheel of a car can affect the lives of numerous people.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) San Andreas Office is hosting free teen driver classes at the following locations:

Raffle to Benefit injured CAL FIRE Firefighter Captain Sue Arrouzet

Town Square, proud supporters of Copperopolis Fire Protection District and local firefighters, is holding a 50/50 raffle to benefit injured CAL FIRE Fire Captain Sue Arrouzet.

Captain Sue Arrouzet, 45 of Tracy, a CAL FIRE firefighter for 22 years assigned to the CAL FIRE Copperopolis Fire Station was injured in a structure fire at Saddle Creek on Friday November 11, 2011 due to a partial structural collapse.

The most recent release from CAL FIRE stated that Sue was in good spirits and had been transferred to a rehabilitation medical center.

If you would like to purchase 50/50 raffle tickets they are available at CFPD Station #1 on Main Street, Town Square Business Office and will be sold at the Chili Cook-Off on January 21, 2012 in Town Square from 11-3.

4.       CDCR has dedicated staff at EACH institution to act as a “county liaison” to assist in sending (or transferring) inmate information to the counties.

a.        CDCR sends mental health and treatment information to the counties at least 90 days before an inmate’s scheduled release. (Remember: all inmates continue to serve the legally required amount of time in state prison with NO early releases).

b.       By law, prison inmates are returned to the county where they lived before incarceration after their sentences are completed. They would be in these communities normally. Realignment does not influence that. 

c.        Many of these offenders needed and obtained county social services before implementation of the 2011 Public Safety Realignment. Funding has been allocated by the State to the counties to alleviate any increase in demand for services by former inmates.

 

5.       The State HAS provided funding to the counties to help meet any increased expenses under Realignment -- $400 million in 2011, rising to more than $850 million in 2012, and more than $1 billion in 2013-2014.

What IS Realignment?

Realignment is a big change for everyone. California is legally required by a federal Three-Judge Panel (a decision affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court) to reduce prison overcrowding, and Realignment is the safest, most effective way for avoiding the wholesale early release of 33,000 inmates. Along with reducing overcrowding, Realignment will help reduce recidivism among low-level offenders who will remain closer to local support networks.

Offenders convicted AFTER October 1, 2011, of a non-serious, non-violent (Remember: this is defined by the California Penal Code, not CDCR) or non-sex offense will stay in county jail to serve their court-ordered sentences. After serving their legally required sentences, based on each inmate’s current commitment offense, inmates will report to either county probation or state parole. If the offender’s current commitment offense is for a non-serious, non-violent, or non-sex offense, the offender must report to county probation. All others will continue to report to state parole.

Copper Holdings Company to play in Copper

The Copper Holdings Company, our local classic rock band, will be performing January 21, 2012 at the Town Square annual Chili cookoff and again at the Dave Head Benefit at Micki and Larry's Sports Pub on January 28, 2012.

18 year old Copperopolis resident Crissy Shevlin has chosen as her Senior Project ‘Every 15 Minutes.’

‘Every 15 Minutes’ is a two day program that focuses on high school juniors and seniors, challenging them to think about drinking, driving, personal safety, the responsibility of making mature decisions and the impact their decisions have on family, friends and many others. The program brings together a broad coalition of interested local agencies with the goal of reducing alcohol-related incidents among youth.

Gary Tofanelli, District 1 Supervisor, was elected Chair of the Board of Supervisors at Tuesdays meeting, 1-10-12.

Tofanelli's hopes are to hold some evening meetings to accomodate those that work during the day to create a more open line of communication with the public.

Secretary Salazar, Governor Brown Expand Partnership to Expedite Renewable Energy Projects in California

SACRAMENTO, CA—Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today signed an agreement to expand a state and federal partnership that has, over the last two years, paved the way for more than a dozen utility-scale solar energy projects and more than 130 renewable power projects in California.

These projects, which underwent rigorous environmental review, will generate thousands of construction jobs and power local economies. If all of these projects were built today, California would have enough renewable power to meet the state’s 33 percent goal.
