Memories of Mothers - Russel Henry, Duluth Herald 5-10-1935 - courtesy Tom Henry

Local history buff Tom Henry recently came across an article written May 10, 1935, by his grandfather, journalist and editor of the Duluth Herald. Tom wanted to share this piece of written art with the residents of Copper.

Memories of Mother.
A child turns to his mother's arms as naturally as a flower turns to the morning sun. There is no consciousness of appreciation or gratitude nor is any expected; as the years pass there comes to every man worthy of the name a deep realization of the months and years with which he is showered with a mother's love and devotion; of the days and nights his thoughlessness and youthful indifference must have caused her pain and worry,  and he thanks God for the blessing that once was his.

Remember that beautiful picture entitled 'Breaking Home Ties'? The scene was that of a farm home and a tall young boy of 17 or so was leaving home to make his way in the world. The family were all there, mother and father, and little brothers and sisters, to say good bye. The boy felt a little sad though he could not conceal the eagerness with which he looked forward to his great adventure. But he was not the feature of the picture. That was the yearning tenderness in the mother's eyes and the concern in her face as she looked up at her young son and thought of the pitfalls and the struggles ahead of him.

Many a man has seen that old picture with a lump in his throat. Looking back through the vista of the years he saw himself in that boy and I recalled his mother's eyes when he, too, first left home; he heard again he gentle appeal to be a good boy and save his money and not to forget to says his prayers at night.

What a beautiful heritage of memories so many of our mothers have left us.

Tomorrow is mother's day and Duluth joins the rest of the nation in observing it.

Think about her, young people! Don't let it go until too late.
