Hanukkah - Dec 8 -16, 2012 - History.com

The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means "dedication" in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional foods, games and gifts.

CalFire press release re: winter weather increases heat related fires

Winter is here!  The days are shorter, the outside temperature is lower, and in some places, it’s cold, icy and snowy.  No matter where you live, winter brings a change in weather and a time to think about home-heating safety.  Improper use or poorly maintained heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires and home fire deaths across the country.  In fact, half of all home heating fires are reported during the months of December, January and February.

“The cooler weather means an increase in usage of space heaters, fireplaces and other heating devices,” said State Fire Marshal Tonya Hoover, CAL FIRE – Office of the State Fire Marshal. “Sadly, when not used safely, heaters and fireplaces can often lead to fires, injuries and deaths that could have easily been prevented.”

To Dine or Not to Dine

12-7-12
This weeks restaurant is Columbia Kate's Tea House in Old Town Columbia.

Nestled just one block behind the main drag of Old Town, Columbia Kate's Tea House is a gem of a find.

'What if I don't like tea?' you ask...well not to worry as the menu is so deliciously varied and rich that there is surely something that will tempt your senses and please your palate.

Entering through the door your are greeted with a taste of old England mixed with tantalizing smells and old country charm. Every available wall space is utilized with pictures, tea saucers and cups as well as arts and crafts handmade by locals and for sale.

Greeted quickly by a server you find yourself seated at a table for two (or four or six etc) with a collection of mismatched tea cups and saucers awaiting your choice of teas. Apple spice for me please. Whereas my shopping partner in crime Maggie ordered an apricot something or other that when served smelled simply delicious...I wouldn't know though as sharing is not much of an option here...once you have what you have ordered and taste it sharing is not on your mind.

CHP RECEIVES FEDERAL GRANT SUPPORTS CHP EFFORTS TO CURB IMPAIRED DRIVING IN CALIFORNIA- press release

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Nearly 1,000 lives are cut short in California every year at the hands
of an impaired driver. In an effort to save lives and reduce the number of people who suffer
injuries in alcohol-related collisions, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is engaged in a

“Our goal with this aggressive education and enforcement campaign is to deter drivers from
making the poor decision to drink and drive,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “And those
who fail to heed this warning will be removed from the roadway and arrested.”

Supervisor Spellman addresses the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Board

On December 5, 2012 Supervisor Spellman went to Sacramento to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Board meeting as a representative from Calaveras County with the clear message that the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors is opposed to the implementation of fees to homeowners in the SRA area... in layman's terms, they are opposed to the fire tax.

Spellman read a letter penned by the BOS and signed by Gary Tofanelli outlining their continued opposition stating that AB29x "is a prime example of hastily enacted legislation without the benefit of proper analysis or appropriate administrative review." Two previous letters sent 12-12-11 and 1-9-12 to the Forestry Board stated the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors position. Without response, the BOS chose to send a voice to the capital so that Calaveras County would be heard.

After reading the letter Spellman stated that he felt "it was reprehensible to force rural citizens to pay for poor policy decisions in the past." Explaining in detail the lack of proper forest management causing an excess in fire fuels with little or no deterrent for what could be termed as "catastrophic forest fire" potential which would inevitably lead to the need for more man power and equipment use, increasing costs exorbitantly.

On this day in History - Pearl Harbor bombed 12-7-1941

At 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time, a Japanese dive bomber bearing the red symbol of the Rising Sun of Japan on its wings appears out of the clouds above the island of Oahu. A swarm of 360 Japanese warplanes followed, descending on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in a ferocious assault. The surprise attack struck a critical blow against the U.S. Pacific fleet and drew the United States irrevocably into World War II.

With diplomatic negotiations with Japan breaking down, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his advisers knew that an imminent Japanese attack was probable, but nothing had been done to increase security at the important naval base at Pearl Harbor. It was Sunday morning, and many military personnel had been given passes to attend religious services off base. At 7:02 a.m., two radar operators spotted large groups of aircraft in flight toward the island from the north, but, with a flight of B-17s expected from the United States at the time, they were told to sound no alarm. Thus, the Japanese air assault came as a devastating surprise to the naval base.

Much of the Pacific fleet was rendered useless: Five of eight battleships, three destroyers, and seven other ships were sunk or severely damaged, and more than 200 aircraft were destroyed. A total of 2,400 Americans were killed and 1,200 were wounded, many while valiantly attempting to repulse the attack. Japan's losses were some 30 planes, five midget submarines, and fewer than 100 men. Fortunately for the United States, all three Pacific fleet carriers were out at sea on training maneuvers. These giant aircraft carriers would have their revenge against Japan six months later at the Battle of Midway, reversing the tide against the previously invincible Japanese navy in a spectacular victory.

Trevor Airlola interviewed by Chico State Ag

Trevor Airola is a born conversationalist. His ability to strike up conversations about the agriculture industry with devotion, eagerness, and enthusiasm fueled a desire to promote and eventually teach agriculture. Airola credits his upbringing on a ranch for his strong agricultural passion, and his involvement in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) organization taught him how to turn a casual story about his experiences into a promotional tool.

“I just loved teaching people about agriculture and informing them of what our industry really does,” Airola said. “Becoming an agriculture teacher allows me to always teach about agriculture and hopefully inspire my students to tell their stories.”

In high school, as a Bret Hart FFA member, Airola was inspired to teach others about agriculture after attending FFA conventions and workshops. “I figure it would be quite effective to provide knowledge of the agriculture industry by teaching 100 students that go through the ag department at a high school in a given year,” Airola said.

Airola chose CSU, Chico because he enjoyed everything about the College of Agriculture after spending time at Chico State for field days and other events held on campus. When Airola originally applied, he declared agricultural business as his major, but as he went through his senior year in high school, he was drawn to what FFA did for him as he became more active. The multiple hands-on agricultural literacy experiences and ability to share his knowledge with others led him to quickly decide teaching was for him. During his first week at Chico State, he changed his major to agriculture with an option in agricultural science and education.

Copperopolis Supports their Troops

The brain child of 18 year old Ashley Gilbert saw the light of day on December 4, 2012 when she, along with Shirley Burke, arrived at the Sonora Post Office with 25 boxes filled with toiletries, books, clothing and goodies for our troops oversees.

5 months ago Ashley brought the idea to the VFW Post 12118 Ladies Auxiliary - in which she is the youngest member - and quickly became the chair of the project. Collecting was not difficult as the residents of Copperopolis readily gave by donating in the red coffee cans that had been placed about town. What Ashley found daunting was the task of correctly shipping packages to troops in need.

As most would think a general delivery would be acceptable, Ashley found that it was not. The military requires that each package be shipped to an individual and then that individual can disperse the contents of the box to his/her platoon. Ashley knew a few folks in the military as did some women from the auxiliary but Copperopolis had been so generous Ashley needed to find more. After calling recruiters, the VFW district Office and the Oakdale National Guard she was finally sent to Columbia National Guard who helped her along her way with names and addresses.

CCPAC Votes on Boundaries for Copperopolis Community Plan

After nine months of deliberation and many maps, presentations and vocal community and developer input the Copperopolis Community Advisory Committee voted on a boundary map for the Copperopolis Community Plan. The vote was 4 to 3 with Steve Hutchings and Jim Tower voting no and Steve Marks abstaining.

It does not include lands East of O'Byrnes past the commercial area of Lake Tulloch Shopping Center (IGA) towards the bridge. It does include all developments either approved or pending approval with permits pulled as well as some land East of O'Byrnes just South of old town. No additional lands across Highway 4 were included. Many developers put forth presentations, speeches and information promoting more land to be included in the boundaries, most notably a 931 acre parcel in the valley of Table Top. Public Works reiterated the fact of increased cost to the benefit basin and the residents of Copperopolis if too much land was included as well as costs shouldered by the County that he felt could not be shouldered at this time.

CCWD also submitted their Copper Cove Water master plan  build out map.
