Keep Your Family Safe and Make Sure Your Alarm Works

Nearly two-thirds of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no working smoke alarms.

To help reduce your chances of becoming a victim, CAL FIRE is reminding all Californians to make sure they have working smoke alarms in their homes. A little attention to these devices goes a long

way to increasing your chance of surviving a devastating fire.

“When a fire strikes, a working smoke alarm gives you that valuable warning that could save your life,” advises State Fire Marshal Tonya Hoover, CAL FIRE.

Make Halloween a fun and safe night for trick-or-treaters

Costumes, jack-‘o-lanterns, haunted house and scary ghost stories mark this time of year as all kids of all ages enjoy the spirit of Halloween.

But if precautions aren’t taken, scary things can happen.

Decorations that ignited are the reported cause in 900 home fires nationwide each year.

Two of every five of those were started by a candle.

To make this day a fun and festive event,just follow these few simple steps to ensure everyone stays safe:

Trick-or-treating

•Children should always go trick-or-treating with a responsible adult

•Provide children with flashlights or glow sticks to carry for lighting and visibility

•Review how to cross a street with your child.Look left, right and left again to be sure no cars are approaching before crossing the street

•If driving, be sure to watch for trick-or-treaters who are too busy to watch for you

•Remind children to stay together as a group when walking from house to house

Costumes:

•Purchase costumes made of flame resistant or flame retardant.Fire resistant does not mean fireproof!

•Apply reflective tape to Halloween costumes

•Masks can obstruct vision –consider using make-up instead

•Avoid loose, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts

•Keep hemlines short enough to prevent tripping

Decorations:

•Keep decorations well away from all open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters

•Light jack-‘o-lanterns with battery powered light –never use candles!

•Keep exits clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes

•Remove objects from the yard that could present a tripping hazard (garden tools, hoses, etc.)

Remember to closely inspect all candy before allowing children to eat it,discarding any unwrapped treats from a stranger.

If in doubt, throw it out!

Fire Danger Exists Despite Cooler Weather

San Andreas – The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit, is reminding all residents the burn suspension is still in effect, until further notice.  Fire danger continues to remain above average across the Central Sierras.  Even though there is rain in the forecast for the weekend, the minimal expected precipitation followed by the predicted north winds is not conducive to safe burning operations.

CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit will continue to monitor the weather and fuel conditions, and will lift the burn suspension when conditions allow for safe burning.

CAL FIRE Announces Greenhouse Gas Reduction & Fire Prevention Grants

Grants Aimed to Improve Carbon Sequestration and Reduce the Threat of Wildfires

CAL FIRE has announced the release of new Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund and one-time drought related fire prevention grants. These grants are aimed at reducing the threat of large wildfires and meeting Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s goal of transitioning California to a sustainable, low-carbon emission future.

“We are excited about this opportunity to expand these programs and bolster the momentum of the work on the ground being done thorough public private partnerships,” said Chief Ken Pimlott, CAL FIRE director and state forester. “We will be hosting grant workshops throughout the state to help facilitate the grant application process for individuals and groups interested in applying for these grants.”

Crash of Airtanker Claims the Life of Pilot

Yosemite, CA...This evening emergency personnel were able to access the crash site of a CAL FIRE airtanker that had crashed near Yosemite National Park and determined that the pilot on board had died. The CAL FIRE airtanker (Tanker 81) based out of the Hollister Air Attack Base had been fighting the Dog Rock Fire near El Portal when officials lost contact with it late this afternoon. The pilot’s family has requested we withhold release of the pilot’s name until all immediate family can be notified.



“This crash underscores just how inherently dangerous wildland firefighting is and the job is further compounded this year by extreme fire conditions,” said Chief Ken Pimlott, CAL FIRE director. “We have secured the crash site and will be cooperating with the NTSB on their investigation.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the pilot’s family during this difficult time,” said Jeff Cavarra, program director for DynCorp International.
CAL FIRE operates 22 other Grumman S-2T airtankers across California.

Current Situation: Firefighters are continuing to build and reinforce containment lines. There continues to be a threat to the Bass Lake Heights community. Access to the fire is difficult due to steep terrain and several structures in the interface.

Firefighters are experiencing extreme fire behavior conditions due to drought and low fuel moisture.

Evacuations: 400 Structures with approximately 1,000 residents living in the

Northern part of Oakhurst and a section Bass Lake near Road 222 are evacuated.

Residents should remain cautious of fire personnel and equipment working in the area.
