CFPD 8-14-14 Board meeting re-cap
At the CFPD 8-14-14 board meeting Director Jerry Andress said the current year was actually appearing to be over budget, which was in stark comparison to a projection earlier in the fiscal year by Chief Kovacs that the District would be functioning under budget. The monthly reports for both May and June were tabled pending further research.
The acceptance of a matching grant from the VFA (volunteer fire assistance) in the amount of $6,675.00 was agreed upon after much discussion with regards to the equipment being purchased with the monies and the necessity of the equipment. Director Keith Anderson pointed out that it was a matching grant, therefore it was also a "bill for $6,675.00" and wanted verification that the district really needed the equipment to justify the added expense. Chief Kovacs was absent as he was still on a strike team in NorCal and was not able to comment, yet Captain Cantrell confirmed that to his knowledge some of the equipment listed was needed.

CFPD board meeting recap
The board discussed the mandatory training attendance for volunteers and options for other dates and times. Chief Kovacs stressed the importance of training and how there are not enough resources or time to train more, though "CFPD has the least hours of training per month than any other department in the county."
"Volunteers are a necessity" stated Kovacs, and stressed though the training is limited in hours it is "training for instances we respond to." Recently volunteers "have been dropped from the roster due to lack of participation." There exists a 50% mandatory training attendance. "Training is one of the most important functions we do."
Studies show that volunteer firefighters require continuous training to ensure he or she is adequately prepared for the variety of situations that may develop. Rural volunteer fire departments require just as much training as personnel of more urban environments. Often members are traveling from much greater distances, which means that decisions must be made on scene even more quickly. Training is effective in reducing injuries and increasing the effectiveness of the response.
