Calaveras Coins Once Again Serves Community

How do you celebrate the legacy of a man who was part of Mother Lode history and Mother Lode history was part of him?  This was the question that faced Calaveras Coins and Collectibles matriarch Merinna May-Wesely after the sudden passing of her beloved husband Howard Wesely in January.
Nearly 20 years after the opening of internationally recognized coin shop at its location on the historic end of Angels Camp the future of the business was uncertain.  However the outpouring of community support was a motivating factor in the decision for Merinna and her son Scott to continue the family run business that has been a mainstay in the historic district of the city of Angels.   A common statement among fellow merchants was that “Howard  helped keep everyone honest.”
With amazing fortitude they soon turned the grief of their loss into the celebration of the life in memory of the man who served his community and neighbors with integrity, honesty and knowledge for over two decades.  Within two months the shop was open once again for business.  “The mentality of the whole team here at Calaveras Coins is to provide unsurpassed customer service and education to both our loyal clientele and new ones to empower them to make good solid decisions whether buying or selling,” states Scott.

Entrepreneurial Spirit Alive and Well in Calaveras County

What do you get when you combine interior decorating skills with contracting skills with love of parenting? In Calaveras County you get the new kids indoor activity and adventure park - Barrel of Monkeez.

Owners and creators Matthew and Jennifer Iannarelli have thrown their heart, sweat and dreams into the creation of the soon-to-be-opening Barrel of Monkeez in Frogtown. Jennifer with a background in interior design and Matthew with a background in construction realized after having their first "monkey" Ayden three years ago that they knew their lives would include some sort of job that revolved around parenting. Quickly discarding daycare and preschool type ventures, the couple, whose son is now three, realized that there is little to no entertainment arenas for children in the foothills. With the seed planted and quickly taking root the couple - trying to keep the adventure in Calaveras County - began looking for facilities large enough to house their grand dream.

Governor Brown Issues Legislative Update

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced that he has signed the following bills:

Copper Fire Bingo

Noise Ordinance Passes BOS 5-0

Weighing in at the 9-11-12 BOS meeting regarding the noise ordinance Lt Seoul from the Sheriff Department made the statement that there could be a reduction in calls due to the possibility of returning to the same call over and over again with the implementation of a noise ordinance.

Spellman took the floor and stated, "You can't legislate respect, you just can't." He continued, we have all "thought of all the possible implications this can have the people who would enjoy peace and who would suffer by this decision... I propose to the Board that we accept as written" the ordinance "with the caveat for an exemption for private parties that do not require a conditional or administrative use permit. We need to focus...we need to distill it a little further, if you are not charging money it is not a for profit event, you should be exempt... there are people who have abused the goodwill and the neighborly sentiments."

Steve Wilensky, "If this is a distilling process we may be over 500 proof by now. We don't think its a great idea to enforce a regulatory hell over the citizens of the county. We have a lack of mediation skills or services... Recently there has been a callus disregard for people in this area, this can not be solved by a permitting process...no more than ten to fifteen people have found themselves to be so important in their sense of freedoms so completing detached from the rights of their neighbors that we have now come to this moment...the goal is to leverage the mediation process..."

Three ammendments:
souund from gunfirirng occuring during hunting
sound from gunfire due to target shooting
sound regulated by the California vehicle code

Passes 5-0

(Reprint) Letter to the Editor re: Fire Tax Protest

Dear Editor,

The Calaveras County Taxpayers Association urges taxpayers to take action on the "Fire Tax"by using the protest procedure developed by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association which is also suing the state to overturn this tax. Action suggested is challenging the tax and requesting a refund.
The Fire Tax Protest site (FireTaxProtest.org) is a one-stop resource for taxpayers who wish to protest the new fire tax, learn more information about their rights, or join a class action lawsuit to overturn what HJTA believes to be an unlawful tax.
”The fire tax is in direct violation of Prop. 13, and it represents an additional burden on rural homeowners who are already suffering in this economy,” said Jon Coupal, president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. “This new tax ... represents the worst of Sacramento -- taking more money from hardworking people for a program they were already paying for, to cover the politicians' budget gap. Today we (HJTA) are offering a new tool for homeowners to protest this new tax.”
The Jarvis group, supported by the Calaveras County Taxpayer Association, is preparing to challenge the tax constitutionally in court on the grounds it should have been subject to the two-thirds vote requirement in the Legislature.
Although taxpayers must pay the bill, the HJTA site shows how to protest the fee in order to be eligible for a refund. There they can sign up for free email bulletins that will keep them informed of the progress of the taxpayers' suit against the state of California. “It is our goal to help taxpayers get relief,” added Coupal. “We are committed to fighting these illegal taxes to ensure taxpayers have their day in court.”

Governor Brown Signs Bipartisan Pension Reform Bill

9-12-12 Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today signed sweeping bipartisan pension reform legislation that saves billions of taxpayer dollars by capping benefits, increasing the retirement age, stopping abusive practices and requiring state employees to pay at least half of their pension costs.

“This is the biggest rollback to public pension benefits in the history of California pensions,” said Governor Brown. “We’re lowering benefits to what they were before I was Governor the first time and reducing costs by up to $55 billion in PERS and billions more in other local pension systems. Under the new rules, employers and employees alike are going to contribute their fair share of the costs, resulting in a more sustainable system.”

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,538,679 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped two more feet this week and is currently at 1007 ft. above sea level and 81 ft. from full.  Water temperature has cooled a bit a is in the mid to upper 70's.  Lake is stained, with mud lines forming around the shore on windy days, and days with a lot of boat traffic. Good news, the lower ramp on Glory Hole Point is open, which makes for an easy walk.

Trout: Great!  We had yet another week of very impressive trout fishing, including a NEW LAKE RECORD rainbow trout!
gray
Angler John Gray was fishing on the "Take it to the Limit Guide Service" boat with guide Gary Burns, when he hooked into this massive 8-pound 2-ounce rainbow on a silver/blue Excel spoon while trolling the main lake. This lunker wins The Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week Contest.

Josh Pfeiffer carried Copper away

With his oh-so-smooth signature melodious voice Josh Pfeiffer - the American Crooner - crooned his way into many hearts at the Town Square concert on 9-8-12.

Fighting a head cold and the beginnings of a chest cold, Pfeiffer delivered a concert that was at the same time moving and exhilarating. While many articles written have compared Pfeiffer to Buble or Sinatra, Pfeiffer most definitely has his own style and adds his own edge to the songs we know and love as well as those songs written by Pfeiffer himself.

The band, with its array of strings, brass, keys and more, was nothing short of spectacular.
One comment that I heard repeated from the audience was the desire to see Pfeiffer perform in a more intimate setting. With this in mind the Copper Gazette will follow up on Pfeiffer and his upcoming events.

Angels Camp Centennial Celebration

Its that time of year - Tarantula time!

This little guy was spotted in town on 9-6-12.
Autumn is commonly reffered to as the mating season for tarantula's as male tarantula's can wander tens of miles in search of a mate. Once a suitable mate has been found he must engage his mating hooks to restrain the fangs of the female. After mating is complete he releases his mating hooks and hopes to make a quick get-away.
Tarantulas are burrowers that live in burrows in the ground up to 3 1/2 feet deep, allowing them protection from the elements hence allowing them to live in many different climates. They mainly feed at night and gather water from early morning dew.
Despite their somewhat threatening appearance no tarantula has been known to have a bite that is deadly to humans.

Thank You

For sharing your Summer

with all of us at

Drifters Marina & Grill

We loved seeing so many of

you over Labor Day weekend.

We understand that as your kids

return to school
there are

fewer days to be at the lake.

We plan on hanging around for a

while yet.  Drifters Marina
will close
for the season on Sunday,
October 14th at 8:00 PM.
Until then, Drifters Grill will be open:

Thursdays - 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Fridays - 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM

Saturdays - 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM

Sundays - 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM

So come on down and let's celebrate

what's left of the good weather

and a full lake.
