(CNN) -- Let's start with the obvious question: Will the government shut down this week? Most likely.

Republicans and Democrats can agree on that. It's everything else that has them bickering and blaming. And unless they strike a deal on a spending bill Monday, the government will begin closing shop at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.

After weeks of congressional back-and-forth, the ball is now in the Senate's court. It meets at 2 p.m. Monday to decide what to do next.

A shutdown, while likely, isn't a foregone conclusion. The deadline is midnight -- and one day can be a long time on Capitol Hill.

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding1,047,499 acre-feet of water.  The lake level dropped one foot this week, and is currently at 949 ft. above sea level and 137 ft. from full.  The water temperature will be cooling a bit but each week until the lake turns over. The lake is still a fairly warm 70-74 degrees. 

Trout: Fair.  The trout fishing has been pretty good with most anglers catching fish and a few limits showing up.  The fish are starting to get a little more active due to the cooler night and shorter days.  The trout are schooling in the main lake over deep/cooler water.  They will be feeding primarily on schooling shad.  The shad will migrate to the mouths of major creek channels and to the back each fall.  Find the shad and the trout will be nearby.  Trolling anglers try fishing in 45-65'of water over 150-200' of water.  The main lake near Carson Creek, Coyote Creek, and Mormon Creek are all good places to find trout.  Try using shad patterned trolling spoons such as Speedy Shiners, Needlefish, and Excels.  Try trolling a little faster 2.5-3.0 mph.  Bank fishing has been very slow but should be getting good soon.  Once the water turns over the trout will move to the surface and to the shoreline.  Watch the weather, if it rains the fish could move to shallow feeder creeks to feed.  Also, they continue are still planting fish on the highway 4 corridor.  Try your luck at Lake Alpine, or Spicer Reservoir.  Fly fishing has been good the aquatic life is plentiful in the fall.  Try using bead headed nymphs during the day and switching to dry flies in the evenings.

Kokanee: Slow.  The kokanee are working their way upriver for their annual spawn and die.  We have had reports of very few fish being caught.  The fish are turning. They are getting some color and a hooked mouth.  The kokanee have been schooling in deep water for the last few months.  Try targeting fish from 70-100' of water.  Try using an Apex fished behind a large dodger.  Pink, green, and orange are good color choice for both the blade and the lure.  It is very important to add plenty of scent to the blade and lure.  Garlic, anise, kokanee special, and bloody tuna are a few favorites.  Don't forget to tip your baits with dyed and scent shoe peg corn.

Bass: Fair.  The bass fishing has been tough for most anglers.  Some fish are moving shallow to feed early mornings and in the evenings.  Try using crawdad colored jigs and soft plastics to target these fish.  There is a large population of fish that are suspended and holding on off shore structure which makes them very difficult to find and catch.  The key to finding these fish is to find where the bait is.  Use your electronics to find bait and the bass will be near.  To catch them try using baits that resemble the bait fish they are feeding on.  Small shad patterned soft plastics fished on a drop shot rig should do the trick.  Another way to catch these fish, is with a suspending rip bait such as a Lucky Craft Staycee or a Pointer Minnow.  If the fish targeting balls of shad in deeper water try fishing a vertical jigging spoon to catch them.  The most popular spoon sizes are ½ oz. and ¾ oz. P-line Laser Minnows, Macks Sonic Baitfish and Hopkins spoon all are proven fish catchers.  

Glory Hole Sports employee and Xperience Fishing Guide Service guide John Liechty caught and released a chunky 9-pound, 6-ounce largemouth.  He reported catching this lunker on a swimbait off of a main lake point.

CHP SAN ANDREAS UPDATE

San Andreas, CA – On September 27, 2013, The California Highway Patrol served an arrest warrant on Samuel Christian Knox, 23, of Burson.  Mr. Knox was located at his residence and was taken into custody at 1310 hrs. 

On July 5, 2013 at 0119 hrs, Mr. Knox was involved in a vehicle collision on South Camanche Parkway.  Mr. Knox was driving his Harley Davidson motorcycle behind his friend, Matthew Maddox, 23, of Burson.  Mr. Maddox was involved in a solo vehicle collision when he lost control of his motorcycle.  Mr. Maddox was ejected off his motorcycle and onto the roadway.  Mr. Knox, due to his level of intoxication, was unable to avoid a collision with Mr. Maddox, subsequently running over Mr. Maddox with his motorcycle.  Mr. Maddox sustained fatal injuries due to this collision.

Mr. Knox was placed under arrest for 191.5(a)PC – Felony Vehicular Manslaughter and 23153(a)VC – Felony Driving Under the Influence.  Mr. Knox was released to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Based on the Calaveras County Coroner report and the Department of Justice Forensic Alcohol Analysis, the Calaveras County District Attorney’s Office issued a warrant for the arrest of Mr. Knox.

SOBRIETY/DRIVER LICENSE CHECKPOINT

San Andreas, CA – On Friday, September 27, 2013, the California Highway Patrol San Andreas Area office conducted a Sobriety/Driver License Checkpoint on State Route 49 in Angels Camp between the hours of 8 pm and 12:30 am.  A total of 344 vehicles were screened.  10 drivers performed Field Sobriety Tests resulting in no arrests for driving under the influence. 2 person was cited for driving un-licensed.

Sonora PD press release re: Major injury accident

26 September 2013, at approx. 5:47 pm, emergency personnel responded to the area of Stockton Road and Ponderosa Way, for a reported vehicle vs. motorcycle accident with injuries.
During the investigation it was determined that Michael Cowley, 51 of Sonora, was westbound on Stockton Road, on his Honda XR650 motorcycle, when Katherine Allen, 42 of Sonora, pulled out from a private driveway in front of Cowley, in her Chevy Suburban.
Cowley didn’t have time to react when Allen pulled out in front of him, and he struck the side of Allen’s vehicle. The force of the collision spun Allen’s vehicle around in the roadway and ejected Cowley from his motorcycle.
Cowley suffered numerous broken bones front both colliding with Allen’s vehicle and the pavement. Cowley was transported to Sonora Regional Medical Center by ambulance.

Angels Camp PD press release re: Domestic Violence Arrests

The Angels Camp Police Department made three arrests related to domestic violence in a 24 hour period. 

On 09-27-13, at approximately 1:20 PM, officers were dispatched to the 300 block of S. Main Street on a report of a physical fight. Upon arrival the involved parties were already gone. Later in the day, at approximately 3:30 PM, the victim arrived at the police department and reported that she was physically assaulted. An arrest affidavit was completed for the suspect and he was located the next morning, 09-28-13, at approximately 9 AM, in the 300 block of S. Main Street. James Rick Moore, a 45 year old Angels Camp resident, was arrested and booked into the Calaveras County Jail on charges related to battery resulting in an injury, false imprisonment, sexual battery, damaging a telephone line, and sexual assault. 

On 09-27-13, at approximately 8:30 PM, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Casey Street on a report of a physical family fight. Further investigation revealed that three subjects were involved in an alcohol fueled fight that resulted in minor injuries. Ruben Daniel Gomez, a 45 year old Angels Camp resident, was arrested and booked on charges related to battery resulting in an injury, child endangerment, and lewd behavior in the presence of a child. 

Kevin Young Nominated for International Retailer of the Year

Kevin Young of Young’s Payless IGA has been nominated for International Retailer of the Year for the international independent grocers alliance. “This is the Super Bowl of the grocery world.” Said Kevin. “It is a major honor to be nominated.”

The Young family owns and operates three IGA stores located in Lockeford, Copperopolis and Pioneer. The Lockeford IGA was the family’s flagship store established in 1953 by Kevin’s grandfather. Copperopolis Fire Chief Steve Kovacs appointed by Gov Brown to California State Board of Fire Services

Steve Kovacs, 46, of Murphys, has been appointed to the California State Board of Fire Services. Kovacs has been fire chief at the Copperopolis Fire Protection District since 2012, at the Murphys Fire Protection District since 2006 and owner of Professional Management Associates since 1989. He held multiple positions at the Ebbetts Pass Fire District from 1981 to 2012, including battalion chief, shift commander, captain, emergency medical services coordinator, engineer, firefighter and volunteer. Kovacs is a member of the Fire Districts Association of California. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Kovacs is a Republican.

An unexpected treat!

Being of daring spirit, hubby and I headed out of our little comfort zone and ventured into what we were sure was the twilight zone.

Heading out for a weekend of fun with friends to watch one of our favorite bands, the Copper Holdings Company, we found ourselves in the little town of Coulterville - seriously do not blink or you will miss it.

The town consists of one main road with approximately 7 buildings all clearly knocking at the door of historical registry level. Coulterville is a throw back to the days of unlocked doors, neighborly ways and haunted hotels. Yes, you read right.

While I aspired to stay in said hotel, the Hotel Jefferey boasting up to 17 ghosts, my plans were waylaid and my alternative I must say was gorgeous! In this little town of 150 there lies a bed and breakfast that is so well appointed and so cozy one would think they were in England - the Rose Cottage. Feather beds, antiques throughout the rooms, handmade quilts, a cozy library with antique settee and ah so much more, sigh.

But I digress. Food, this article is about food....

An easy way to help our Copper Kids at school

Each year the students of Copperopolis Elementray diligently collect Box Tops for Education from cereal boxes, clothing packages, frozen foods, etc, all to help raise funds for the school. They also collect Campbell's Soup Labels.
Funds raised go into the PTC fund which in turn purchases sports equipment, classroom supplies, field trip transportation, assembly education/entertainment and more.
If you would like to collect Box Tops or Campbell's Soup labels and would like to donate them to the school, you can drop them off in the office during school hours.

Though this will be Judie’s last year, it by no means signals the end of her art career, quite the contrary. Judie, painting since her youth has broken new ground.

Gov Brown signs bill to increase minimum wage

OAKLAND – Acting to help California’s working families, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today signed AB 10 by Assemblymember Luis Alejo (D-Salinas), which will raise the minimum wage in California from $8.00 per hour to $10.00 per hour.

"It’s a special day to stand with workers who are laboring for all of us and laboring at a very low wage. Turning that wage into a $10 an hour wage is a wonderful thing," said Governor Brown prior to signing AB 10 in Los Angeles. "It’s my goal and it’s my moral responsibility to do what I can to make our society more harmonious, to make our social fabric tighter and closer and to work toward a solidarity that every day appears to become more distant."
