US Forest Service almost out of funding for fire suppression

The US Forest Service reported Wednesday that the agency had spent $967 million on firefighting suppression this year and would be out of funds soon, with only $50 million left in the coffers. Funds are being diverted from timber, recreation and other areas to assist.

Tuolumne County Supervisors held an emergency meeting this week asking Gov Brown to declare a state of emergency thereby freeing up more funding for firefighting. A State of emergency declaration will allow the use of National Guard resources including but not limited to personnel and helicopters.

The RIM fire began on august 17th at 3 pm with the August 19th report being 800 acres. It has grown to 53,866 in just over three days with only 2% containment.
