Dia De Los Muertos - Day of the Dead in Murphys

On November 3rd and 4th, 26 downtown Murphys merchants held their first Dia De Los Muertos - Day of the Dead. The walking tour took the event attendee through downtown Murphys through shops, wineries, and more to view altars, art, replicas and some fanciful displays all honoring the Day of the Dead.

The Day of the Dead can be traced back nearly 3000 years focusing on the gathering of friends and family for a time of remembrance of those that have been lost. Traditionally it is believed that on November 1st the gates of heaven open and the spirits of the children that have been lost are allowed to reunite with their families. On November 2nd the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities. Skulls play a large part in the tradition as with indigenous peoples skulls were used to represent death and rebirth. The skulls now are colorfully decorated. During the celebration altars are erected and decorated with candles, flowers (usually marigolds) fruits, tortillas and water as the weary travelers are in need of nourishment. The ceremony concludes in the afternoon of the 2nd where the families traditionally gather at the cemetery and reminisce about their loved ones. 

Some altars were heartfelt and moving, some were whimsical and others were commercial. Clearly the heart told the altar engineer what to create and how to create it.

New melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,477,149 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped very little this week, and is currently at 1001 ft. above sea level and 87 ft. from full.  Water temperature has cooled a bit and is in the 60's.  The lake is clear, to slightly stained. The lake will "turn over" when surface water cools to the same temperature as the deeper water- around 53-54 degrees. This usually happens around Thanksgiving, and then the trout bite really turns on for bank-anglers and trollers alike. Good news, the middle ramp on Glory Hole Point is open, which makes for an easy walk.

Statement of Facts

The Copperopolis Fire Protection District has placed Measure C on the November Ballot.  This Measure is to re-affirm the District’s Appropriation Limit, also known as the Gann Limit.  This ballot measure requirement comes from legal language that is still in place from the property tax movement of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.

MEASURE C IS NOT AN INCREASE IN TAXES OR FEES

Measure C is not a new tax. It is simply a re-authorization to allow the Copperopolis Fire Protection District to spend the revenues from taxes that were already approved in 1997 and 2002 by more than 2/3 of the voters within the District.  Measure C is not a new tax or a tax increase.  By approving Measure C, your taxes will not be increased in any way, but the Copperopolis Fire Protection District will be allowed to spend the taxes that have already been approved and collected.  Article XII(b) of the California State Constitution requires the voters approve this Measure every four years.

The Gann Limit prohibits the District from spending tax revenue that equals more than the approved limit, thus restricting growth, and sometimes reducing tax-funded programs and services. 

If Measure C is not passed, the Copperopolis Fire Protection District will be unable to spend some of the tax revenues collected each year.  This may mean the loss of the paramedic services and the potential loss of firefighter positions.  As a result, residents might have to wait for up to 30 minutes for a paramedic response. 

MEASURE C IS NOT A NEW TAX. A YES vote on MEASURE C will allow the Copperopolis Fire Protection District to spend the tax revenue that you have previously approved and assist in maintaining the level of protection it provides to the community.

Tuolumne County Sheriff press release re: Shot fired during dispute

On November 4^th at around 2:00 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Don Pedro Market regarding a fight that ended when one of the participants, later identified as 71 year old James Wesley Kennedy, pulled a handgun and fired a shot. No one was hit.

The dispute occurred when Kennedy confronted another man who’s son was spending time with Kennedy’s grand daughter. Kennedy objected to the relationship and a heated argument began. After an investigation, Kennedy was arrested and charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

Sports Pub takes Countywide Pool Tournament

Good morning, 
The Sports Pub did it again. 
We took the countywide  pool tournament yesterday 11-4-12. Thank you Bob, who was undefeated. Now in 6 months, we will host the tournament again. Thank you to all players, there were some awesome shots made. Hope to see all of you again in 6 months.

Copper Elementary 4th graders take a romp through Copper History

Thanks to the commitment of the Copperopolis Community Center, the history of Copperopolis comes to life each year for the second and fourth grade classes at Copperopolis Elementary.
Coordinating the event with the students classroom curriculum the CCC brings history alive by walking the children through the historic parts of town telling tales and lore of days gone by as well as facts and statistics of this great town.

After a few cancellations due to the weather, finally and with much anticipation, on October 29, 2012, 32 children from the fourth grade classrooms taught by Mrs. Bauer (substitute the day of the walk by Mrs. Mercado) had the joy of participating in this historic excursion including lessons on the cannon and the bell, Madam Felix, the mines, the cemetery and the museum. Finishing at the old red brick church for some songs and cookies.

CalFire Battalion Chief Van Wormer final farewell

On November 3, 2012 a ceremony for Jamestown resident and fallen firefighter - CalFire Battalion Chief Rob Van Wormer - was held at the Concord Pavilion. Hundreds came to pay their respects and remember the man and his dreams.

Van Wormer passed away, from what has been determined to be natural causes, on October 27, 2012 while conducting an investigation in the Santa Cruz area.

Copperopolis Town Square to Host Inaugural ‘Taste of the Holidays’ Celebration

 Wine, Holiday Extravaganza to Benefit Copperopolis Food Pantry

(COPPEROPOLIS, Calif.) – Copperopolis Town Square – located at the gateway to Calaveras County on Highway 4 – will host the inaugural “Taste of the Holidays” celebration Saturday, November 10 from 1 – 4 p.m.

Providing a jump-start to the holiday season, the extravaganza will include live music by Leroy and Jana, a secret auction and door prizes. Fourteen local vineyards will be on-site to pair wines with special fare including festive dishes and desserts. In addition, participating stores will display decorations and gift ideas for the upcoming holiday season.

Tickets for adults are $15 (advance) and $20 (at the door) benefitting the Copperopolis Parks and Recreation, who will donate proceeds to the local Food Pantry to assist with holiday dinners. Contributions will also support the “community garden,” a Parks and Rec project providing fresh produce to underprivileged families.

Over the weekend members of the James D Piper VFW Post 12118 of Copperopolis handed out poppies at Savemart in Angels Camp and Payless Market in Coperopolis.

The poppies are a memorial symbol of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, yet today have come to be a symbol of those that have gone before, those that have served and those still serving.

To Dine or Not to Dine…

This week’s featured restaurant is Gus' Steak House in Sonora.

At first glance the entrance lacks curb appeal with a seedy appearance and parking sparse, but upon entering you realize you have entered an establishment that has made its mark and is simply showing signs of age. Dining with a time limit is not my preferred method of dining yet my husband and I were the proud owners of two tickets to a Sierra Repertory play at the Sonora playhouse and did not want to be late for the performance so we shot for the early bird special and were pleased to be seated and served quickly.

Sheriff logs show quiet Halloween for Copper

According to the Sheriff Dept daily logs, law enforcement had a quiet Halloween in Copperopolis with one noise complaint at 12:49 am on Shoreline.
