California Fire Agencies Roll Out Online Campfire Permit Fire Prevention Urged for Memorial Day Weekend

As Californians make their Memorial Day weekend and summer vacation plans, CAL FIRE
and federal fire agencies want to ensure vacationers obtain necessary campfire permits and learn how to have a campfire safely.

The California Wildfire Coordination Group (CWCG) unveiled the new fire prevention website, www.PreventWildfireCA.org, which for the first time offers an online campfire permit section.

“The new online system makes it easier for Californians to get a permit, while still taking the time to learn how to have a campfire safely,” said Chief Ken Pimlott, CAL FIRE director. “It is critical that a responsible adult be in attendance of your campfire at all times and that it is completely extinguished before you leave to avoid sparking a wildfire. One less spark means one less wildfire.”

No Seasonal CalFire stations re-opened for high wind fire risk

CalFire issued a press release 12-18-13 concerning the forcasted winds for the area creating an increased fire threat.
According to CalFire PIO Lisa Williams from Tuolumne/Calaveras Unit no seasonal stations will be re-opened for the potential increased fire threat due to the forecasted high winds, yet staff has been preparing for the possibility throughout the week and is "prepared  to respond to any incidents within the unit or throughout the state should the need arise."

California Statewide Fire Summary Friday, August 23, 2013 - CALFIRE

California Statewide Fire Summary Friday, August 23, 2013
Nearly 8,000 firefighters remain on the frontlines as nearly a dozen major wildfires
continue to burn. Yesterday, CAL FIRE crews contained the Swedes Fire that burned in Butte County, just as a new fire ignited on the Fort Hunter Liggett Military Installation.
CAL FIRE and the US Forest Service are in unified command of the extremely fast
moving Rim Fire burning just outside Yosemite National Park. The fire is threatened 4,500 homes and has forced thousands to evacuate.
Most of this week’s thunderstorms have moved out of California and little threat of dry lightning remains. All Red Flag Warnings for dry lightning have expired. While both CAL FIRE and local firefighters continue to be very active in fighting the State’ wildfires, a
majority of the fires are burning on National Forest land.
The current high level of fire activity is a good reminder of the dangers posed by wildfires. CAL FIRE urges all Californians and visitors the state to be extra cautious outdoors with any open flame or item that could spark a fire.

    California Statewide summary - CALFIRE

    California Statewide Fire Summary
    Sunday, August 18, 2013
Over 5,000 firefighters are on the frontlines of the 10 major wildfires burning in
California. While many of these fires are in remote areas, several fires have
forced hundreds of residents to evacuate.
While firefighters are making good progress, weather conditions could pose a challenge
in the coming days as gusty winds and dry lightning are forecasted.
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning due to the
possibility of dry lightning in combination with gusty winds for many of the coastal
counties from Mendocino down to Monterey. The warning goes into effect
Monday at midnight and is expected to last through Wednesday.
A Fire Weather Watch for lightning has also been issued starting Monday
morning for most of the mountains and foothills of Northern California. The
thunderstorms are expected to initially be dry, which will heighten the fire danger,
but should begin to bring some rainfall by midweek.

California fires raging at over 77,000 acres

According to the Fire Incident Web page there are currently 12 wild land fires being fought by the US Forest Service and CALFIRE raging in California totaling 77, 067 acres.

With fire season well under way, the trend of increased fire activity has continued. Unfortunately, the dry conditions the State has experienced will only worsen and lead to a higher fire threat. It is critical that homeowners are prepared for wildfires and remember "Ready, Set, Go!". Homeowners looking for additional information on "Ready, Set, Go!" and on how to prepare themselves, their families and their homes for wildfire can visit www.ReadyForWildfire.org. With 94% of the wildfires in CAL FIRE’s jurisdiction started by people, it's also critical that everyone, including residents and vacationers, take steps to prevent wildfires. One Less Spark, means One Less Wildfire. Learn more on how to help prevent wildfires by visiting www.PreventWildfireCA.org.
