Sheriff Dept Press release re: Fleeing Suspect Tracked Down by Police K-9 Team and Deputies

(Arnold, CA) On 11/04/13 at 10:20 am, a Calaveras Sheriff’s Deputy contacted a male adult, identified as James Qualls (41) of Avery, pushing a bicycle alongside Highway 4 near Rancho Paradiso Road in Arnold. Upon speaking with Suspect Qualls the deputy determined that Qualls was under the influence of a controlled substance. As the deputy attempted to inquire further about his observations Suspect Qualls suddenly ran away from the deputy into the wooded area, abandoning his bicycle and a backpack. The deputy gave chase but lost sight of Suspect Qualls. Other deputies, along with an Angels Camp Police Department K-9 team arrived at the scene to assist with the search of Suspect Qualls. The K-9, who goes by the name of Kato, was able to pick up the scent and quickly locate Suspect Qualls hiding out in a dry creek bed. A follow up search by the K-9 on the path taken by Suspect Qualls turned up a cigarette pack containing suspected methamphetamine. Marijuana and drug paraphernalia was also found inside Suspect Qualls’ backpack.

Suspect James Qualls was arrested and booked into the Calaveras County on the charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance (felony), Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance (misdemeanor), Obstructing a Peace Officer (misdemeanor), and Possession of Marijuana Under 28.5 grams (infraction).
