(Arnold, CA) On 11/04/13 at 10:20 am, a Calaveras Sheriff’s Deputy
contacted a male adult, identified as James Qualls (41) of Avery,
pushing a bicycle alongside Highway 4 near Rancho Paradiso Road in
Arnold. Upon speaking with Suspect Qualls the deputy determined that
Qualls was under the influence of a controlled substance. As the deputy
attempted to inquire further about his observations Suspect Qualls
suddenly ran away from the deputy into the wooded area, abandoning his
bicycle and a backpack. The deputy gave chase but lost sight of Suspect
Qualls. Other deputies, along with an Angels Camp Police Department K-9
team arrived at the scene to assist with the search of Suspect Qualls.
The K-9, who goes by the name of Kato, was able to pick up the scent and
quickly locate Suspect Qualls hiding out in a dry creek bed. A follow
up search by the K-9 on the path taken by Suspect Qualls turned up a
cigarette pack containing suspected methamphetamine. Marijuana and drug
paraphernalia was also found inside Suspect Qualls’ backpack.
Suspect James Qualls was arrested and booked into the Calaveras
County on the charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance (felony),
Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance (misdemeanor), Obstructing
a Peace Officer (misdemeanor), and Possession of Marijuana Under 28.5
grams (infraction).
