National Weather Service Special Weather Announcement

...RIVERS...STREAMS....AND LAKES RUNNING FAST AND COLD THIS WEEKEND...

THIS WILL BE THE WARMEST WEEKEND SINCE EARLY MAY. TEMPERATURES WILL
BE IN THE 80S IN THE VALLEY AND FOOTHILLS. WE WOULD LIKE TO REMIND
PEOPLE OF THE HIDDEN DANGERS FROM THE SPRING SNOW MELT SEASON
RELATED TO RECREATIONAL WATER ACTIVITIES.

DURING THE LATTER PART OF OUR SPRING AND EARLY SUMMER...THE WATER
IN OUR RIVERS...STREAMS AND RESERVOIRS IS BEING FED DIRECTLY FROM
THE MELTING SNOW PACK. OUR RIVERS AND STREAMS ARE RUNNING HIGH WITH
SWIFT MOVING CURRENTS AND COLD WATER TEMPERATURES. PEAK FLOWS FROM
THE SPRING SNOW MELT ARE NOT EXPECTED UNTIL LATE JUNE WITH
MOUNTAIN RIVER AND STREAM LEVELS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TO RISE OVER
THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.

WATER TEMPERATURES THIS WEEKEND WILL BE IN THE LOW 50S IN LOWER
ELEVATION RIVERS...STREAMS AND RESERVOIRS. COLDER WATER
TEMPERATURES WILL PERSIST IN THE FOOTHILLS AND MOUNTAINS...RANGING
IN THE MID TO UPPER 40S.

GETTING CAUGHT IN COLD WATER COULD LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA...A SUDDEN
LOSS OF BODY TEMPERATURE THAT CAN BE FATAL. WARNING SIGNS FOR
HYPOTHERMIA INCLUDE UNCONTROLLED SHIVERING...MEMORY
LOSS...DISORIENTATION...SLURRED SPEECH...DROWSINESS AND APPARENT
EXHAUSTION. HYPOTHERMIA IS A DANGER THAT CAN STRIKE QUICKLY AND
CAN AFFECT CHILDREN FASTER THAN ADULTS. MONITOR CHILDREN CLOSELY
FOR SYMPTOMS...EVEN IF WADING IN SHALLOW WATER.

PEOPLE RECREATING IN AND NEAR WATERWAYS SHOULD WEAR LIFE
PRESERVERS...AND CHILDREN TWELVE AND UNDER ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO
DO SO. LIFE PRESERVERS SAVE LIVES.
