SACRAMENTO – On behalf of all Californians, Governor Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown honor Lance Cpl. Jared C. Verbeek and Cpl Gurpreet Singh, who bravely gave their lives in service to our state and nation. The Governor and First Lady extend their deepest condolences to their family and friends at this difficult time.
In memorial, Governor Brown ordered that flags be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol today. Lance Cpl. Verbeek's and Cpl. Gurpreet Singh's families will receive a letter of condolence from the Governor.

Lance Cpl. Jared C. Verbeek, 22, of Visalia, CA, died June 21 from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, CA. Verbeek was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Cpl. Gurpreet Singh, 21, of Antelope, CA, died June 22 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, of wounds received while conducting combat operations. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, CA. Singh was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
