Smokey the Bear visits Copperopolis Elementray school

On Tuesday MArch 11, 2014 Smokey the BEar and his freinds from CAlFire and the US Forest Service came to Copper School to teach the children, K-3rd grade the importance of fire safety.

Each grade had an interactive presentation tailored to their age group.

Third grade students re-learned the importance of stop-drop-and- roll as well as the correct way to call 911. They were given scenarios to call into 911 regarding auto accidents, house fires, wildland fires, accidents in the home, and strangers. They learned the importance of knowing their address, street and town as well as cross streets and any defining characteristic that may help emergency personnel find the location.

Smokey the Bear visits Copper School

On Tuesday February 26, 2013 representatives from the US Forest Service and CALFIRE visited multiple classrooms at Copperopolis Elementary to teach fire safety and introduce their good friend Smokey the Bear.

The children were taught to stop, drop and roll if they or their clothing ever caught fire, they were taught never to play with matches, lighters or fire, and were walked through the importance of a 911 call. The older classrooms were invited to participate in an interactive 911 call whereby a child would make a call to 911 and a virtual dispatcher would respond walking through the necessary steps to complete a 911 call, most importantly to stay on the line, because as the child was talking to the dispatcher she was simultaneously dispatching emergency personnel to the scene. Each grade level received age appropriate instruction and activity books.

Don't play with matches, lighters or fire...

Smokey the Bear turns 68!

The beloved Smokey the Bear turned 68 years old on August 9, 2012.

Smokey was first used as a poster character Aug. 9, 1944, and is one of the most widely recognized characters in the world. An animal artist specializing in drawing dogs, Albert Staehle was the first artist to render Smokey, and his Smokey had long, silky hair. Rudy Wendelin, who created art for the U.S. Forest Service from 1946 through 1973, refined the character into what we know today.
