American Red Cross Seeking Local Disaster Volunteers in Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties

CALAVERAS, CA – Thursday, August 28, 2014 — With a steady increase in local disasters and the continuing California drought fueling severe wildfire risks, the American Red Cross Capital Region is seeking dedicated volunteers to respond to the increasing needs in Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties.

 The American Red Cross Capital Region is targeting “high-risk” communities to raise fire safety awareness and reduce fire risks. This Sunday, local Red Cross volunteers will begin an effort to educate and inform community members in Calaveras County about the dangers of home and wildfires and what they can do to prepare and reduce their risks.

“Home fires are by far the most common disaster across the country, so it is critical that everyone take steps to prepare and help prevent these tragedies,” said Kathleen Weis, Chief Executive Officer of the Red Cross Capital Region. “Building awareness and taking action is key to reducing the number of fire incidents in our communities.”

CERT Team from Copper heads to Sonora to help with evac shelter

Some local CERT (Community Emergency Repsonse Team) trained representatives from Copperopolis have been called out to head to the Sonora fairgrounds to help set up an emergency evacuation shelter for those being evacuated from the Groveland area fire.

The emergency shelter is anticipating up to 450 people.

The CERT team is a team trained by the Red Cross to prepare and respond to emergency situations within their community and surrounding communities.

Red Cross Disaster Action Team forms in Copper

On the evening of March 5, 2013 the American Red Cross held their first Disaster Action Team training course for Copperopolis. Approximately 8 residents attended with backgounds from Law Enforcement to Hospice, from homemaker to firefighter, all there to volunteer their time in the event of a Copperopolis disaster.

The team will learn shelter operations, mass care, client casework and more. They will plan a local emergency shelter and organize the estimated needs for food, clothing, and mental and physical health. This Disaster Action Team (DAT) will also learn how to guide those who show up after a disaster and are willing to help. The DAT team will undergo hours of training and participate in a mock disaster.

Red Cross looking for Local Disaster Volunteers

Calaveras, CA – 5 January 2013— The American Red Cross is looking for local disaster volunteers. Having access to trained Disaster Action Team (DAT) local members is critical to the response of area emergency responders during a major disaster in Calaveras or a disaster affecting a single family in the Greater Copperopolis Area.
Thanks to many dedicated Calaveras County volunteers, the Red Cross is able to immediately respond to the immediate needs of Calaveras families affected by home fires, floods, wildfires and other disasters throughout the year in the Fire Protection Districts of West Point, San Andreas, Murphys, CalCo (Jenny Lind/Foothill) and Central Calaveras.
