WELCOME HOME, CANYON KID...NOW REACH FOR THE SKY! When a straight shooting singing cowboy known as The Canyon Kid returns to Dirt Clod, he finds his hometown in the grips of a tyrannical "hanging judge" named Basil Kadaver and his evil co-horts - the slinky gypsy seductress Nastassia Kinky and her half-witted brother, Two Gun Boris. To make matters worse for The Kid, he also discovers that his childhood sweetheart, Darla Darling, is engaged to a known desperado who is now the town sheriff. Will The Canyon Kid defeat the bad guys, win back the love of his life and restore justice to his home town??

For its second production, the new Footlight Theatre Company has chosen a feel-good musical, fit for all ages.  The venue is Angelo’s Hall in Columbia, and a real treat is the live music to accompany the seven- person cast of talented singers and actors, whose voices do not require amplification.  

Patterned after the famous Charles Shultz comic strip “Peanuts,” the show will be familiar to anyone who has seen “Peanuts” TV specials.  This show is very loosely plotted though there are the familiar conflicts revolving around Charlie Brown’s  being thought of as a “loser” despite his optimism and his interest in (and fear of) the little red-haired girl. As in Broadway productions of this show, the actors are many years older than the child-like characters they play, but the script so strongly represents childhood that the audience willingly suspends disbelief and maybe even connects with some of that child still in them.  As far as children in the audience, they enjoy the “silliness” enough to be enthusiastic listeners, as evidenced by one 5-year-old named Julian.

Spring brings many thoughts of hope to an optimistic boy like Charlie Brown, but for some rreason he still can't seem to win the heart of the Little Red-Haired Girl he likes so much, nor can he seem to get his kite to fly right, nor has he ever still pitched a winning baseball game. His friend Lucy is also having trouble trying to win the heart of her crush - the piano-playing Schroeder, while struggling with the heavy burdens of building and operating her “Queendom”. Meanwhile Snoopy and Sally daydream while Woodstock flitters about and Linus battles with school reports.

 
“You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” is a beautiful show made up of little moments carefully chosen straight from the Peanuts gang comic strips. From Valentine's Day to baseball season, from brave optimism to utter despair Charlie Brown has been a beloved figure of childhood nobility for over half a century, and the noble character created by Charles Schultz is just as endearing today.  “The soul of Charlie Brown is indeed in everyone,’ agreed director Anthony De Page, “and each of these characters offers a touching relation to children of all ages.”

Footlight Theaters Murder Mystery dinner - hilarious sleuthing

One is never really certain what to expect at a murder mystery dinner, other than a murder and a dinner, however, Footlight Theatre Company's murder mystery dinner was so very much more than that.

The mystery written by, none other than the theatre groups own artistic director, Anthony DePage had more twists and turns than the latest roller coaster ride at Six Flags.

Upon entering, you are treated to the immediate immersion into theater with characters mingling about and clues being tossed in the air via verbal altercations between characters and interrogations by eager theatre goes attempting to gather clues.

Footlight Theatre Company will begin its new monthly series in Columbia State Park just in time for Valentine’s Day!  This February 15^th “Footlight Murders” presents a miner’s tale of love… and of a solid gold, heart shaped nugget of death!!

In 1864, a cobbler from Columbia named Kicker Goodman saw business fall off as gold became harder to find. The poor man was forced to go to work in the Cruel Springs Mine just to support his young fiancé. When a heart shaped gold nugget was pulled from the main vein of the mine, Mr. Goodman made a poor choice. In a crime of passion Kicker stole the nugget and planned to run away with his true love to live happily ever after…  Nobody can truly say what happened at the Goodman cabin that fateful day when Sheriff Ellerbe went to investigate, but when authorities went to the house later on sheriff Ellerbe, Kicker Goodman and his sweetheart were all found dead and the stolen nugget was nowhere to be found. Thought to be lost forever, the nugget became legend, and the legend begot a curse – that anyone who should find it, touch it or possess it – would die! Over the years the story was forgotten like the gold rush and nobody ever gave it a thought… until three weeks ago!
