Stage 3 theater's Christmas play "Greetings" - good Christmas entertainment by Shari Schweigler

What’s the funniest thing about Christmas?  Other people’s dysfunctional families!  Stage 3’s current production of Tom Dudzick’s  Greetings! gives us a good dose of that crazy, crazed, family hilarity, combined with sweet fantasy and maybe a little food for thought.  All in all, a good Christmas entertainment --- kind of a modern Dickensian Christmas Carol.

Stage 3 has assembled a group of five, fine actors under the inspired direction of Jay Newington.   Anthony DeGregorio, striking the right tone for the son who got away, and Susannah Holland, amazing as his disabled sibling who will never leave, have pleased Stage 3 patrons this season in previous roles.  Mike Moon, the cranky dad, Sherry Dumos , the perfect longsuffering wife and mother, and Kaitlyn Brennan, the sweetly innocent houseguest, are all veterans of Stage 3, as well as other area theaters. Dumos played a much more abrasive character in Stage 3’s most recent production, Good People.

Holiday “Greetings” from Stage 3

Stage 3 Theatre Company brings a story of faith, family and miracles, yes miracles, to downtown Sonora in the form of a play by Tom Dudzick called Greetings, beginning November 14 and running until December 21.

Going home for the holidays has never been quite like this. Andy has a sweet Catholic mother, a sour Catholic father and a developmentally disabled  younger sister named Mickey. When he brings his Jewish atheist fiance to meet the folks on Christmas Eve, his worst fears about family blow-ups are realized. But when Mickey, whose entire vocabulary has been limited to "oh boy" and "wow," suddenly spouts the word "Greetings!" the entire family's belief system is turned upside down. For it seems an ancient, wise and witty spirit who is set upon healing the family's wounds has borrowed Mickey's body.

An Evening with Dave Rainwater at Stage 3

Changing the world one fiddle at a time, Western Fiddler, Minstrel and Storyteller Dave Rainwater will be in concert for one show only, Saturday, November 1 at Stage 3 Theatre Company, located at 208 S. Green St. in Sonora. Doors open at 6pm and the show begins at 7pm.  The beer will be cold and the people are friendly, come down and have a good time, hear some tall tales, good fiddle playing and enjoy an evening in historic downtown Sonora.

Voted “Best Musician in the Mother Lode” in 2009, Dave’s forty plus years of fiddle playing has taken him through nearly every venue in the foothills and across the country. With Dave’s performance it’s a guarantee you’ll enjoy championship fiddling and be entertained by someone who loves the rich tradition of America’s heritage and folklore as well as our country's musical roots.

Stage 3's production of 'Good People' - "comical and entertaining" by Shari Schweigler

The award-wining play, “Good People,” has opened at Stage 3 Theatre in Sonora.  Set in Boston’s tough South End, as well as upscale suburb Chestnut Hill, the play pits those who “made it” against those who didn’t. Think of the neighborhoods in the movie “Good Will Hunting.”

The audience is transported to working-class “Southie” by the tough-luck tales and salty language of three Southie ladies.  One of these, Margie, quickly gains our sympathy. Played with brilliant authenticity by Sarah Grimes-Emmons, Margie (short for Margaret with the hard “g”) has the pluck to survive her hard life, but her friends say her soft heart gets in her way.   

In 2011 Frances McDormand won a Tony for originating this role. The play, by David Lindsay-Abaire, won the New York Drama Critics Circle award for best play.

Stage 3 'On Golden Pond' - "good laughs with a poignant edge" by Shari Schweigler

You know how America loved Archie Bunker?  Even though he was an irascible bigot who verbally abused his wife Edith and his son-in-law “Meathead,” audiences identified with him and sympathized with this “little guy” trying to make the world work for him.

Now imagine Archie as an intellectual, a long-married, retired professor who also has problems making the world work the way he wants.  You have Norman Thayer, Jr., the lead character in Ernest Thompson’s On Golden Pond, being produced by Stage 3 in Sonora. You may be familiar with the movie version of this play, which starred Henry Fonda, Kathryn Hepburn, and Jane Fonda, but if you haven’t seen the play, you are in for some good laughs with a poignant edge.

So says Becky Foster in the comedic new play, “Becky’s New Car,” at Stage 3 Theatre from May 2^nd through June 1^st.

Becky is a middle-aged woman with a nice husband, a decent job, and a typical college-student son living in the basement.

What if Becky got the chance to lead a double life of romance and glamour?  What if you and the entire audience got to go along for the ride?

Stage 3 - Park your Car in Harvard Yard - "lots of laughs" amid "retribution, redemption and reconciliation" by Shari Schweigler

A surprising entertainment has opened at Stage 3 Theatre in Sonora and continues through March 23.   Park Your Car in Harvard Yard  is the story of an elderly, retired schoolteacher and the young housekeeper he hires after living alone his entire adult life in the same Gloucester, Massachusetts, house where he grew up. It’s surprising because there are lots of laughs in the play despite the fact that it deals with themes of retribution, redemption, and reconciliation. 

            The play appeared on Broadway in the early 90’s with Jason Robards and Judith Ivey as “Mr. Brackish” and “Kathleen Hogan.”  The Sonora production features Stephen Daly and Susannah Holland and was directed by Van Gordon, Stage 3’s new artistic director.
