Calaveras Artist, Libby Fife, teaches “Split Primary” Six Color Mixing Chart for Watercolors

Calaveras Arts Council is now offering affordable art classes at the Gallery Store location at 22 N. Main Street in San Andreas.  Local Calaveras artist, Libby Fife, is teaching a beginning art class on how to create a color wheel.  In this one day class, you will learn to make a version of a “split” primary color chart that uses both a “cool” to “warm” version of each of the three primary colors in a your  watercolor kit.  You will learn how to mix a variety of primary and secondary colors as well as some lovely grays and browns (neutrals).  This class is focused on the concept of creating a limited palette to use as a guide in painting or sketching.  Limited palettes can help to unify your sketches and teach you about your paint properties, and are a useful compositional tool.  They are great for beginning painters on the go too because there is less to carry.

Judge Hugh Swift will be holding two meet and greets in Copperopolis this coming week.
October 12th at 1:30 at the armory.
October 13th at 2:00 at Roasters Coffee Corner.

Judge Hugh Swift’s 29 year legal career includes a diverse background uniquely qualifying him for the position he currently holds – Calaveras County Superior Court Judge.  As recently noted by retired Judge Douglas Mewhinney, “Judge Swift’s breadth of experience is indispensable in a two-judge court.”

For the first 13 years of his career, Judge Swift practiced civil litigation in Southern California.  In 1999 he moved to Calaveras County and began his career with the California courts working as a research attorney for the Amador Superior Court, soon thereafter promoting to the position of Court Executive Officer.  In 2006 Judge Swift was appointed to serve as a Superior Court Commissioner. As a commissioner, Judge Swift presided over Child Support and Small Claims cases on a weekly basis. The decisions he made in those cases had the same legal force and effect as the decisions he currently makes as a judge. In December 2013, Judge Swift was appointed to the Calaveras Superior Court after a lengthy and thorough vetting process by the California State Bar’s Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation (JNE).  A process only judges who are appointed by the Governor are required to go through; which is designed to determine an applicant’s qualifications, character and judicial demeanor

Currently, Judge Swift hears criminal, civil, traffic, family law, probate, domestic violence and civil harassment cases.   Since taking the bench, Judge Swift has presided over felony and misdemeanor jury trials, in addition to civil, family law and probate court trials.

Judge Swift hears all Drug Court cases and is working with the Court’s justice partners and veteran’s advocates to establish a Veterans Treatment Court.  More than 20 Superior Court Judges, including Judge John Martin and retired Judge Mewhinney of the Calaveras Superior Court endorse Judge Swift.  In addition, he enjoys the support of educators, health care professionals, small business owners and members of the community.

Judge Hugh Swift has lived in Calaveras County for 15 years, where he is raising his children and is active in his community. Judge Swift was a partner in Newsome Harlow Wine and a member of the board of directors of Mind Matters Clinic in Murphys.  He enjoys spending time hiking, hunting, riding horses and watching his daughters dance and play soccer.

Judge Swift has not sought the endorsement of any political party for this non partisan position.

Russ Thomas - CCWD Director candidate - held a meet and greet on Monday evening to a small crowd of Copper residents to introduce himself and present his stand on issues facing CCWD.
He invited candidates Lin Reed - Mark Twain Health Board and Kendall Morlan - MTUESD School Board.
Judicial candidates Grant Barrett and Tim Healy were also in attendance.
Short presentations were made by each candidate and then questions from the attendees were taken.

 Governor Brown Issues Statement on Fatal CAL FIRE Airtanker Crash

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued the following statement regarding the death of pilot Geoffrey “Craig” Hunt in yesterday’s crash of a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) airtanker assigned to the Dog Rock Fire in Yosemite National Park:

“Anne and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Craig Hunt, who bravely fought wildfires throughout the state. Our deepest condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues.”

Hunt, 62, of San Jose, was a veteran pilot with DynCorp International under contract with CAL FIRE. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

In honor of Craig Hunt, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.

My name is Kendall Morlan and I am running for a board position for Mark Twain Union Elementary School District.  Both my children are products of MTUESD.  My daughter is now a sophomore at Davidson College in North Carolina, and my son is a 7th grader at Mark Twain Elementary.  I have been closely involved in their educational experience.  I served on the Copperopolis Elementary School Site Council for 4 years, and I volunteer in the after-school Homework Club.  I am the community leader for Copper Hills 4-H Club and have been involved with 4-H for 10 years.  

I believe that I am uniquely qualified to serve on the board of Mark Twain Union Elementary School District.    My parents are retired educators.  My mother was a top-level district administrator and my father was a high school teacher and coach. Their views were often in conflict, and I learned how to appreciate both sides of an issue.  Additionally, my sister was a special needs student, and my daughter was a GATE student.  I believe this diverse experience will help me to bring people together to accomplish the goal of preparing our children to be successful in a challenging world.

Small-town antics, homespun humor and foot-stompin’ fiddlin’ come to Sierra Repertory Theatre’s Fallon House Theatre in Columbia State Park September 26 – October 26 with Mark Twain’s A Murder, A Mystery and A Marriage. Set in Deerlick, Missouri, the musical fits Columbia’s historic feeling and should delight audiences seeking a taste of the wit of legendary humorist Mark Twain.

“It’s a good time with lively music,” said Dennis Jones, the theater’s producing director. “When audience members leave I want them to turn to their date and say, ‘Wasn’t that a lot of fun?’”

Twain wrote the original short story for the Atlantic Monthly in 1876 as part of a proposed competition among 12 prominent writers. The idea was to give a skeleton plot involving a mysterious stranger and a murder to the authors (Henry James was among them) and publish each author’s version. The scheme never flew, and the story languished. It resurfaced once in 1945, then again in 2001. A musical version, by Aaron Posner, co-founder and resident director of Philadelphia’s Arden Theater Company, came shortly after. Posner invited well-known composer James Sugg to write the bluegrass, gospel and gypsy jazz songs.

Sonora PD Press release re: Homecoming parade road closures

Sonora High School’s Homecoming Parade will take place Friday, 10 Oct. 2014. Washington Street (SR 49) will be closed to all traffic between Snell Street and Church Street from approx. 2:15 pm to 3:00 pm. Also, School Street will be closed from 1:30 pm to 2:15 pm for staging purposes.
The parade will leave Sonora High School and enter Snell Street from School Street. It will then travel south on Snell Street to Washington Street. At Washington Street, the parade will turn south and travel south on Washington Street. It will then turn right onto Stockton Road, then right again onto South Green Street and end at Courthouse Park.

Crash of Airtanker Claims the Life of Pilot

Yosemite, CA...This evening emergency personnel were able to access the crash site of a CAL FIRE airtanker that had crashed near Yosemite National Park and determined that the pilot on board had died. The CAL FIRE airtanker (Tanker 81) based out of the Hollister Air Attack Base had been fighting the Dog Rock Fire near El Portal when officials lost contact with it late this afternoon. The pilot’s family has requested we withhold release of the pilot’s name until all immediate family can be notified.



“This crash underscores just how inherently dangerous wildland firefighting is and the job is further compounded this year by extreme fire conditions,” said Chief Ken Pimlott, CAL FIRE director. “We have secured the crash site and will be cooperating with the NTSB on their investigation.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the pilot’s family during this difficult time,” said Jeff Cavarra, program director for DynCorp International.
CAL FIRE operates 22 other Grumman S-2T airtankers across California.

Angels Camp PD press release re: Stolen Property and Marijuana Arrest

On October 3, 2014 at approximately 10:00 pm, the Angels Camp Police Department served a search warrant in the 1200 block of Gold Cliff Road after an officer observed a marijuana garden and a stolen motorcycle on the property earlier in the day when he was investigating a suspicious vehicle parked on private property.

Nine mature marijuana plants, approximately 94 ounces of marijuana, and a stolen motorcycle were recovered from the property.

Ross Raymond Moon, a 27 year old Angels Camp resident, was arrested and booked in to the Calaveras County Jail for cultivation of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sales, and possession of stolen property.

Wind, thunder, heat... They can all affect Doggie's behavior and mood. Weather doesn't have the same effect on all animals, though. Some dogs are particularly scared of thunder, while others ignore it.

If you have a dog who's scared of thunder, you already know how storms can affect canine behavior. Signs of phobia include panting, whimpering or barking, and hiding. According to a study conducted by Penn State University researchers, some dogs experience a rapid increase of cortisol -- the stress hormone -- during thunderstorms. In fact, when researchers tested the saliva of thunder-phobic dogs, they found their production of cortisol to be 200 percent higher than that of dogs who aren't afraid of thunder. According to the same researchers, 15 percent to 30 percent of dogs are extremely scared of thunder.

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding

519,436 acre-feet of water.  The lake level dropped just inches this week and is currently at 862 ft. above sea level and 215 ft. from full.  The water is stained in most of the lake. There are mud lines forming near the shore throughout the day, especially on windy days. The average water temperature is 74-78 degrees.  

Tuttletown launch is closed. Glory Hole Point boat launch is the road leading off the end of the point.  It is a dirt launch without courtesy docks and 4wd is recommended.

 

Floyd Crow of Columbia caught a hefty 12-pound, 11-ounce catfish while fishing with mackrel and anchovies at night.
