Newsome Harlow pours a wonderful evening at Snaps
Snaps Coffee House and Wine Bar once again hosted a delicious evening of wine tasting featuring local winery Newsome Harlow. Accompanying the great wines were appetizers to temp any palate and music to fill the heart played by Danny Burton on guitar and John Sexton on the flute - phenomenal duo.

On 03/22/2012 at approx. 6:30 PM Calaveras Sheriff’s deputies received a report from Donald Parker that his wood splitter had been stolen from a property in the 5000 block of Carol Lane in Burson, and that a neighbor advised him that he had seen suspicious persons on the property. A stolen property report was completed.

Community Open House for O’Byrnes Ferry Bridge Project to be held on April 4
Calaveras County is hosting a community open house on Wednesday, April 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Copperopolis Fire Station, 370 Main Street, to provide information and receive input from community members on the O’Byrnes Ferry Road Bridge rehabilitation/replacement project. The purpose of the project is to improve the safety of the bridge and its approach roadways. This phase of the work will identify feasible alternative alignments, estimated construction costs, and funding sources.
Representatives from Calaveras County and its design team will provide an overview of the project, present preliminary alternative concepts, costs and funding, answer questions, and discuss ideas in an informal setting.
Please drop by at your convenience any time between 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A brief presentation will begin at 6:15 p.m.

Sheriff Dept Advisory: Three Stolen Motorcycles Recovered in Valley Springs
Three Stolen Motorcycles Recovered in Valley Springs
(Valley Springs, CA) On 03/15/2012 at approx. 9:35 AM deputies from the Calaveras County Sheriff's office were dispatched to the 2300 block of Blake Lane in Valley Springs to investigate a report of child abuse. Upon arrival the deputies contacted Bradley Joseph Flores (42) of Valley Springs and his nephew, Ruben Sanchez (20) of Valley Springs. During the investigation at the residence deputies located an indoor marijuana grow operation and discovered three stolen off-road motorcycles outside the residence that had been reported stolen out of San Joaquin County. The total value of the motorcycles was over $6,000. The indoor grow was reported to be an approved medical marijuana operation. Flores and Sanchez were taken into custody and booked into the Calaveras County Jail. Flores is currently in custody at the Calaveras County Jail on charges of 273(a) PC, 10851(a) VC, 496(a) PC, 496(d) PC. Sanchez is currently out on bail on charges of 10851(a) VC and 496(a) PC. This case is still under investigation.

Sonora PD press release re:subject attacks officer
21 March 2012, at approx. 1:03 pm, the Sonora Police Department received a report of a male subject dressed in black with a white cowboy hat yelling at passing vehicles. An Officer responded and contacted the subject on Highway 49, across from Vic’s Towing.
When the Officer exited his vehicle, the subject immediately stated telling the Officer that he was going to kill him. The subject then charged the Officer for no apparent reason. The Officer deployed an electronic control device, but the device had little impact on the subject. However, it did stop the subject’s advancement towards the officer.

Gov announces appointments
George Alexeeff, 57, of Walnut Creek, has been appointed director of the Office of Environmental Health and Hazard Assessment at the California Environmental Protection Agency. Alexeeff has been the deputy director at the Office of Environmental Health and Hazard Assessment since 1998. He has worked at the department since 1988, serving as chief of the Air Toxicology and Epidemiology branch from 1990 to 1998, and chief of the Air Toxics Unit from 1988 to 1990. Alexeeff earned a doctorate in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of California, Davis. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $147,828. Alexeeff is a Democrat.

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. appointed Juan Felipe Herrera to the position of California Poet Laureate.
Mr. Herrera, 63, is the author of twenty-eight books and currently serves as the Tomás Rivera Endowed Chair in the Department of Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside. He was a professor and chair of Chicano and Latin American Studies at California State University, Fresno, from 1990 to 2004 and a teaching assistant fellow at the Iowa Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa from 1988 to 1990.

To Dine or Not to Dine
Where to dine or not to dine – that is the question.
It became apparent, after trying to decide where in the foothills to dine next, that relying on the yellow pages was not a good idea, nor was Yahoo or other paid-for sites. So in case I don’t write enough I thought I would start a little food critic column titled – To dine or not to dine.
Now here’s the thing, my tastes will be different from others and I readily admit that I have no culinary background, but I do think after being alive for almost 50 years I know when food is cooked correctly or not, whether a drink is poured well or not and especially whether wait staff is first-rate or in need of a career change.
So, tada, here is my first installment of …

Interview with Russ Thomas - candidate for District 4 Supervisor
Russ Thomas, prior District 5 Supervisor, announced his candidacy for the District 4 Supervisor seat expressing a desire to once again serve the community of Copperopolis and to have the opportunity to serve the Angels Camp area.
Thomas, a resident of Copperopolis for 15 years, spent 30 years in the masonry industry. He holds a BA in Administration and has list of committees and commissions he has sat on or chaired dating back to the early ‘70’s. Most recently he has held the positions: Calaveras County District 5 Supervisor 2007-2010, Calaveras County Fish and Game Commission 2000-2006, Stanislaus County Planning Commission 1989-1995 (chairman 1992). Thomas said, “I bring the skills from those positions with me.”
When asked why he was seeking election Thomas stated “I feel my work for Calaveras County is not over…I would like to continue” what he started. The county “needs strong leadership…strong leadership can change the economic condition” of the county. Further stating that in order for a change, there must also be a change of attitude.

Senior Project to benefit Copper Branch Library
Local senior, Donald Lucas has chosen to support the Copperopolis Library for his senior project.
In doing so he is announcing an upcoming book sale where all proceeds benefit the Friends of the Library.

The Copperopolis Library will be having a Book sale this weekend Saturday, March 24, 12 - 4 pm and Sunday, March 25, 12-6 pm at 90 Copper Cove Dr. in the building next to the library.
Books will be sold for: 50 cents per paperback, $1 per hardcover, $5 per bag, or the best price offered. VHS tapes are also available. Higher quality books will be priced separately.
All of the proceeds from the event will go to the Copperopolis FOTL.
Cycling Race April 1, 2012- road closure notification
Little John Road, from Quiver to Town Square, will be closed on Sunday April 1 from 8AM to 2PM. A detour route is available and will be marked on the day of the event, directing you onto O’Byrnes Ferry Road and Copper Cove Drive.
At the same time there will be Time Trials on Rock Creek road. The road will be open to traffic during that race since riders are racing against the clock 1 at a time with 30 second gaps in between.

Tom Tryon - District 4 Supervisor Candidate/Incumbant Interview
Tom Tryon has served on the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors for 28 years as a District 4 representative. Though he has seen the district lines change throughout his tenure it has not changed as "significantly" as the most recent redistricting which placed Copperopolis in District 4. Tryon stated that he "has always been an advocate for a corridor 4" coordination.
Graduating from UC Berkeley at the height of the Vietnam War, Tryon was active in the ROTC while in school and went on to join the Army and became stationed in Ft Bliss Texas working with Army Air Defense Hawk Missiles. While never deployed overseas, he is honored to have served his country. Receiving an MBA from University of Chicago he entered the banking industry quickly finding his niche in agricultural lending. Falling in love brought him to the foothills and into the family ranching business.

Thomas Barry, 47, of San Francisco, has been appointed to the State Mining and Geology Board. Barry has been a senior geologist at Shaw Environmental and Infrastructure Group since 1997. He was a geophysicist at JR Associates from 1996 to 1997, a project manager and geologist for Ogden Environmental and Energy Services Inc. from 1995 to 1996, an environmental planner and geologist for Pacific Basin Environmental Consultants Inc. from 1994 to 1995 and a geophysicist and utility surveyor for JR Associates from 1990 to 1994. Barry is a member of the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists and the Northern California Geological Society. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Barry is registered decline-to-state.

Condemned inmate Lawley found unresponsive in cell
SAN QUENTIN – On March 11, 2012 at approximately 3:50 p.m. condemned inmate Dennis Lawley, 69, was found unresponsive in his cell at San Quentin State Prison. Lawley was pronounced dead of natural causes at approximately 4:20 p.m. He was single-celled.
Lawley was sentenced to death by a Stanislaus County jury for first-degree murder with special circumstances on February 26, 1989 for the murder-for-hire of Kenneth Lawton Stewart on January 28, 1998.
George Runner Calls for Cap on Rising Fuel Taxes
George Runner called upon state lawmakers to limit fuel taxes Californians pay at the pump to the first $4.00 per gallon.
“While taxes aren’t the only reason for rising fuel prices, they are part of the problem,” said Runner. “As fuel prices rise, California consumers are paying more tax for less gas.”

19 March 2012, at approx. 11:55 pm, an Officer from the Sonora Police Department stopped a Toyota Camry for traveling 50 MPH in a 35 MPH zone on Stockton Road. The Officer contacted the driver, who was identified as Kenneth Summers, 53 of Sonora. Summers had an open alcohol container between his legs and was exhibiting signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Update on condition of driver re:Copper Cove vehicle accident
The following is an update on the condition of 47 year old Bob Fergus submitted by a family member.
"He is very very lucky to be alive and actually the medical staff are impressed with his condition. He does have a left leg broken in 5 places, right leg broken in 2 places, broken hip, broken left arm and 2 broken wrists he also has a punctured lung. He does not have any damage to internal organs (besides the lung) which is great news. He is stable but does have several surgeries ahead of him. Today at 11 he will have repairs to his arms and other leg. Then Friday he will have his wounds closed - they are worried about infection. He is kept sedated and intabated because his wounds are very severe and they want his body to heal. They did say he could be there for many weeks if not months and then he will have to go to a rehab facility. We can't begin to express our thanks to all the people involved with his rescue. The men and boys out there helped save him."

Each Monday the student body of Copperopolis Elementary gathers at the entrance to the school and watches in respectful silence as the American flag is raised by the student body. Instructed by the Sergeant at Arms Treysen Caywood to remove "caps and covers" the children removed their hats, covered their hearts and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Debbie Ponte - District 4 Supervisor candidate
Debbie Ponte - Executive Director Foothill Village community threw her hat in the ring March 8, 2012 as a candidate for District 4 Supervisor.
Ponte has been a resident of Angels Camp since grade school, attending both Mark Twain and Bret Harte, only to leave to attend college, first at Delta in the valley and then to Fresno State where she received a Bachelor's in Journalism and Public relations.
She has served on the Angels Camp City Council - elected to two four-year terms. While on the council she served two years as Vice Mayor and four years as Mayor of Angels Camp. During her terms she worked with the city to develop long range plans for water and sewer, worked on grant funding, and handled one of the largest crisis' in Angels Camp in the last 10 years..the Darby Fire, where AC found themselves without water for days and a supply and demand nightmare for a basic necessity of life - water.

Name Spelling Correction for Yesterday’s Falling Tree Victim
The Calaveras Sheriff’s Office incorrectly identified the spelling of the victim’s name in yesterday’s falling tree accident. The correct Spelling should be Haley Verzani, not “Hailey” as previously described. The Sheriff’s Office would like to apologize for any confusion that this may have caused.

CHP releases crash victims name
The CHP reports that the driver of the car that was involved in the Copper Cove vehicle accident on 3-18-12, 'auto over embankment', is 47-year-old Robert Fergus. According to the report, Fergus lost control while driving his a 1984 Porsche, causing the vehicle to go over the embankment and knock down a power pole.

(Arnold, CA) The 8 year old victim who succumbed to injuries from a falling tree yesterday in the 2700 block of Moran Road in Arnold has been identified as Hailey Verzani, the daughter of Lindsey Jacoby and Christopher Verzani. She attended the 3rd grade at Hazel Fischer Elementary school in White Pines. The Calaveras Sheriff’s Office has declared the incident as an accidental death.

On Sunday, 03/18/2012, at approximately 0625 hours, Calaveras County 911 Dispatch received a call from a residence on Moran Rd in Arnold, reporting a tree had fallen on the residence.
Ebbetts Pass Fire Department and Medical, accompanied by Calaveras Sheriff Deputies and CHP, responded to the location where they found the tree had come down on the bedroom of a minor. The minor (an 8 year old female) succumbed to injuries resulting from the accident.
The minors name is being withheld at this time.

There are precious few golf destinations that can legitimately be called "hidden gems" these days; journalists such as yours truly make it their mission to explore every inch of the golfing universe in search of them.

Vehicle Over Embankment Copper Cove Drive
At approximately 11:30 am 3-18-12 a call came out of a vehicle rollover on Copper Cove Drive between Quiver and Sawmill. The accident was a solo vehicle accident. The single occupant vehicle went over an embankment, knocking down a PG&E power pole, landing partially in the creek. Copper Cove Drive was initially closed to one lane traffic, but soon closed in both directions.
The driver, a male, received major injuries and was medi flighted to a local hospital for further care.
The driver's name is not being released at this time and the cause of the accident is under investigation.
According to CHP a press release will be issued 3-19-12.

Letter from Lungren re: town halls meetings
Just as the welcome rains fell over the Sacramento Region this week, I welcomed fresh input from you all during my travels around The District as I prepared to head back to Congress and represent you.
It is good we are able to have honest conversations about the issues that we agree or even disagree about.
At the beautiful Citrus Heights Community Center Tuesday during our recent Town Hall, nearly two dozen of you made your way to the microphone to make a statement, offer a suggestion or simply ask a question. It is obvious all of you wish to make our country and community better.
