Twisted Oak Bringing bluegrass to the foothills August 2, 2013

Starting out a couple years ago as "an experimental spoken word bluegrass band," (doesn't that sound commercially viable?) The Deadly Gentlemen are now playing what they call a mix of "epic folk and grasscore." What does this mean? Well, there are five band members: Greg Liszt (also of Crooked Still), banjo and vocals; Stash Wyslouch, guitar and vocals; Mike Barnett, fiddle and vocals; Dominick Leslie, mandolin and vocals; and Sam Grisman, double bass and vocals.
Instead of having a lead singer, they use a nonstop orchestration of somewhat unconventional vocals, with everybody in the band doing everything they can. Expect a lot of three-part harmony singing, group shouting, really dense rhymes and an almost rap-like phrasing. Their songs have kind of a rock ‘n’ roll feel, despite the acoustic bluegrass instrumentation.
the deadly gentlemenSome of their songs started out as miniature epic poems based on folk songs. That’s where the term “epic folk” comes from. The grasscore songs are the ones where everybody in the band throws caution to the wind and goes completely berserk. Kind of the punk or hardcore mentality, but applied to bluegrass. And please... don’t call it a boy band.

Bashwalla returns to Twisted Oak

Twisted favorite Bushwalla, an acoustic/ Hip-Hop performer rooted in folk, comedy and optimism, will be back this fall to wrap up the inaugural Folk at the Oak Summer Concert Series!
Bushwalla (aka Billy Galewood) began performing in musical theater at the early age of nine. At 18 he was studying theater at the American Musical & Dramatic Academy in New York City, supporting himself as a street performer by incorporating such feats as juggling, magic, face-balancing, and fire-breathing. Today, Bushwalla's sound has evolved into a unique blend of acoustic hip-hop, folk, and funk with a soul deeply rooted in authenticity and optimism.
A songwriter, collaborator and free-styler, Bushwalla co-wrote Jason Mraz's debut platinum album, Waiting For My Rocket to Come and sophomore release Mr. A-Z. Recently, his songs have been featured on hit television shows such as Weeds, Revenge, Fuel TV, E!s The Daily 10 and the Rachel Ray Show. Bushwalla co-wrote the title track to the breakout film New York Minute and, in 2012, his song "Mayhem is Beautiful" will be featured in the film 10 Year, starring Rosario Dawson and Channing Tatum.

Twisted Oak Concert Series presents - Darol Anger and the Furies - August 24

Darol Anger and the Furies will be performing at the Twisted Oak Concert Series on August 24, 2012 at 7 pm.

In Greek mythology, the Furies were ferocious godlike avengers who would swoop down on mere mortals and destroy them with relish (or, in rare cases, mustard). The only difference here is that when these fantastically talented presences swoop down on Darol Anger, the result is not destruction but inspiration.

Maria Muldaur to perform at Twisted Oak

On July 27, 2012 at 7 pm enjoy an evening under the stars at Twisted Oak Winery's concert under the stars with Maria Muldaur.

Maria Muldaur is best known world wide for her '74 mega-hit "Midnight at the Oasis," which received several Grammy nominations, and enshrined her forever in the hearts of Baby Boomers everywhere; but despite her considerable Pop Music success, her 39-year career could best be described as a long and adventurous odyssey through the various forms of American Roots Music. During the folk revival of the early '60s, she began exploring and singing early Blues, Bluegrass, Appalachian "Old Timey" music, beginning her recording career in 1963 with the Even Dozen Jug Band and shortly thereafter, joining the very popular Jim Kweskin Jug Band, touring, and recording with them throughout the '60s.

Uncle Bonsai Live at Twisted Oak

Uncle Bonsai performs original, contemporary folk/pop music. With their soaring and intricate 3-part vocal harmonies and biting humor, accompanied by only an acoustic guitar, Arni Adler, Patrice O'Neill, and Andrew Ratshin deliver poignantly unflinching portrayals of life, love, and a guy named Doug. The trio's influences range from the Beatles to Stephen Sondheim. Some say Zappa cross-bred with Peter, Paul and Mary. Loudon Wainwright III, the Roches. Three tightly tiered and adhered voices, acoustic guitar. That's it. Nearly naked folk-pop for everyone.

Twisted Oak concert series presents David Lindley

Join Twisted Oak July 13, 2012 at 7 pm for a concert under the stars featuring:
Multi-instrumentalist David Lindley performs music that redefines the word "eclectic." Lindley, well known for his many years as the featured accompanist with Jackson Browne, and leader of his own band El Rayo-X, has long championed the concept of world music. The David Lindley electro-acoustic performance effortlessly combines American folk, blues, and bluegrass traditions with elements from African, Arabic, Asian, Celtic, Malagasy, and Turkish musical sources. Lindley incorporates an incredible array of stringed instruments including but not limited to Kona and Weissenborn Hawaiian lap steel guitar, Turkish saz and chumbus, Middle Eastern oud, and Irish bouzouki. The eye-poppingly clad "Mr. Dave's" uncanny vocal mimicry and demented sense of humor make his onstage banter a highlight of the show.

Twisted Oak Concert series presents Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum with The Bee Eaters

Join Twisted Oak on July 6, 2012 7 pm for a concert under the stars featuring :

Since forming a musical partnership in 1986, when Tom first joined Laurie’s acclaimed band, Grant Street, Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum have recorded 12 albums and performed around the globe. These Grammy-nominated artists (for their 1995 album The Oak and the Laurel) are widely regarded as among the leading lights of modern bluegrass.

bee eatersThe Bee Eaters trace their roots back to musical traditions as diverse as bluegrass, Celtic, jazz and old-time. While today’s new breed often produces an amalgamation of sounds and styles based on a distant view, the Bee Eaters were raised embedded in these traditions… raised to mold, meld, shape them and carry them forward, leaving their own indelible marks in the process. Brother-sister duo Tristan and Tashina Clarridge, long known and lauded by those steeped in the American fiddle tradition, are joined by hammer dulcimer wizard Simon Chrisman.
