Artists open studio to Calaveras Arts Council Studio Tour

Cain Art Studio on Calaveras Arts Council Artists Studio tour September 28 and 29th, 2013.
Foothill artist Judie Cain will be opening the doors of her art studio- Cain Art Studio - one last time for the September 28/29th Calaveras Arts Council Studio Tour. Though this will be Judie’s last year, it by no means signals the end of her art career, quite the contrary. Judie, painting since her youth has broken new ground.

Judie’s chosen medium of oil has allowed her to stay true to her love of nature, the beauty and energy  it possesses, yet her style has slowly transformed from a studio atmosphere style working from staged set ups and photographs to her true passion, painting on the go – known as plein air. While studio painting allowed Judie to spend time perfecting her work, creating levels of depth to her vibrant paintings, plein air has taught her to seize the moment when the world touches her heart with beauty and to paint from the soul.

In the summer of 2013 Judie had the opportunity to paint in ‘real time’ in Calaveras Big Trees - the fruits of her labor proudly on display in the entry building of Big Trees with a home to be in the new visitor center under construction. This experience being nothing short of “spiritual” Judie has embarked on a new adventure - experiencing the world, connecting with nature and breathing life into a painting. Hence the last year of the Cain Art Studio on the Artist Studio Tour as Judie will be selling her studio to explore more.

Judie has invited her friend and fellow artist Barbara Conley to join her on this last tour, which incidentally will be Barbara’s first participation in a studio tour.

Barbara has been painting since she was young enjoying the composition and intricacies of animals at play and at rest, as well as landscapes and buildings with historical character. Drawn to winter scenes when painting landscapes with acrylics Barbara captures the awe and mystery of a somber winter day yet breathes life into that same day capturing the light as it glimmers on the snow or the soft flakes as they fall from the sky.

Barbara’s love of detail is evident in her genuine portrayal of animals. Each hair, each wrinkle, the minute way a breeze floats over their fur, all captured with a stroke of her fine brush, a flick of her wrist, as if you were gazing at a photo real enough to touch.

Recently Barbara was fortunate enough to attend a course on wildlife photography, photographing animals from a preserve in Montana – mountain lion, wolf, porcupine, coyote, grizzly, and more. The artist’s renditions of these subjects will be unveiled on the artist studio tour.

The Calaveras Arts Council Artist Studio Tour is a self-guided car excursion on back roads to studios featuring nearly 30 artists. Enjoy unique studios, meet the artists and learn about their process. Buy art directly from them. Passports cost $10 per person and it is made up in booklet form with directions, short bios and photos of artists’ works.

Call Calaveras Arts Council at (209) 754-1774, come by Gallery Calaveras at 22 Main St. in San Andreas or pick up your passport from any studio on the tour.
