Though it is nearly 2012, we felt it was important to note the significance that ranchers and agriculture has in our community and beyond.
The following is an excerpt from the Calaveras County Report of Agriculture 2010 to the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
"The value of agricultural production for 2010 was $21,695,800. This figure represents an approximate 6.7% increase from the 2009 gross production value of $20,332,000. This increase is largely due to an increase in the production value for livestock and poultry. The price per pound for livestock increased in 2010.
Cattle and calves continue to be the County’s leading farm commodity. The 2010 value of cattle and calves was $7,002,000, an increase of 21% from 2009. In 2010, poultry became the number two commodity over wine grapes.
Wine grapes dropped to the third leading farm commodity in the County. The decrease in wine grapes was due to the weather. In 2010, the growers experienced a long damp spring which affected the bloom of some varieties. A hot spell later in the summer resulted in some varieties shriveling. During harvest, the weather cooled early and some growers did not harvest.
I would like to note that although the amount of timber harvested in 2010 increased from 2009, the price per board foot in 2010 was significantly less than in 2009. "
