I would like to request your participation, once again, in speaking to my United States History students on your experiences while serving our Nation.  I have scheduled this year’s presentation Friday, May 2, 2014, from 8am – 12:45pm  in the Lower Gym of Bret Harte High (same location as last year). 

The purpose of this presentation is to help bring history alive for our students.  Who else can tell the story of our Armed Forces better than those who have worn the uniform?  Learning history on a first-person basis is the most remembered history.

Like years past, I will have the Lower Gym setup in an “exhibitor” fashion with small groups speaking with each presenter for approx. 20 minutes.  I would like to encourage you to bring with you any momentous, pictures, etc. that will help to tell your story.

Judicial candidates and Sheriff Candidates forum held in San Andreas

A judicial and Sheriff candidate forum was held last night in San Andreas to a crowd of approximately 140 people.

Questions had been processed through submissions accepted via email and whittled down to 5 basic questions.

Each candidate was allowed an introduction and were timed on both intro and response to questions.

SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Frank Bigelow, R-O’Neals, the vice chair of the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks and Wildlife, today issued the following statement after the committee passed comprehensive water bond legislation, Assembly Bill 2043, that he co-authored with Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway, of Tulare and Assembly Bill 2686 that he jointly authored with Assemblyman Henry Perea (D-Fresno), Assemblyman Adam Gray (D-Merced) and Assemblyman Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield.)

Sonora PD press release re: Burglary suspects and counterfeit update

On 15 April 2014, at approx. 1516 hours, two men entered Tia’s Tubs and Toys located at 716 Mono Way. While one of the suspects distracted the employee, the other removed 16 packages of flea medication worth $960.

Both the suspects were caught on store surveillance video. The quality is not great, but the police department is releasing the photographs of the suspects in hopes to identify them. The below photographs depict each of the suspects separately and one with them together.
UPDATE:
Recently, the police department released photos of three people involved in the passing of several counterfeit $20 bills at Wal Mart. Within a few minutes of posting the photos on our facebook page, someone called and identified one of the male subjects. Approximately a week later, another person called and identified the female subject.

Angels Camp PD Press release re: Officer of the Year Also Receives MADD Award

Officer Darien Wilson has been selected as the Angels Camp Police Department’s recipient of the Angels-Murphys Rotary Club’s Officer of the Year award for 2013. He was recognized along with other colleagues in the public safety community, last Thursday, April 24^th, at an annual luncheon hosted by the Angels-Murphys Rotary Club at Ironstone Winery.

Officer Wilson was hired by the Angels Camp Police Department in January of 2013, and during his first year on the job has demonstrated that he is a very motivated individual that can accomplish more than is typical of most rookie police officers. In addition to leading the department in arrests for 2013, he has applied for a grant through the California Office of Traffic Safety, related to special enforcement for driving under the influence offenses. He is a community-minded team player and a valuable asset to the department and the community he serves.

Runner: Tax Freedom Day Comes Later This Year

SACRAMENTO – Tomorrow Californians can finally celebrate Tax Freedom Day, a full six days later than last year, says George Runner.

“Unfortunately, Californians must work 120 days this year to pay their full tax bill,” said Runner. “California’s burdensome tax climate continues to stifle its citizens, creating a difficult economic environment in which to live and work.”

On 04/28/14 Calaveras County Resident Deputy Kyle Johnson was following up on a lead regarding vandalism to the Gavin Brummund memorial tree located in White Pines Park. The tree was planted as a memorial for fallen Marine Gavin Brummund. Deputy Johnson learned that juveniles were responsible for the removal of the tree. The juveniles were not aware the tree was planted for the local fallen Marine and were remorseful. The juveniles were cited for the vandalism.

CHP teaming up to stop the number one killer of Teens - press release

TEAMING UP TO STOP THE NUMBER ONE KILLER OF TEENS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. –Traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the

United States. In response to this troubling fact, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has

partnered with Impact Teen Drivers with a shared goal, to change the teen culture and make

distracted driving intolerable. The yearlong traffic safety campaign continues through September 2014.

“Enforcement alone is not the answer – education plays an equally important role in keeping

California’s teenage drivers safe,” added Commissioner Joe Farrow. “We encourage parents to

get involved by talking to their teen driver about the rules of the road and by being good role

models behind the wheel.”

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding

935,865 acre-feet of water.  The lake level dropped seven feet this week and is currently at 933 ft. above sea level and 152 ft. from full.  The water is slightly stained with some areas forming mud lines. The average water temperature is 64-68 degrees and rising daily.  The boat launch ramps on the Glory Hole side have been moved back out to the end of the point which makes for a very short walk.    

Trout: Slow.  The trout bite at the lake has been fairly tough.  The fish are at many different depths and scattered about, making them difficult to target.  In the next couple months they will definitely be favoring the cooler water near river channel in the main lake. Trolling anglers try fishing various depths from 10-60'.  Excel, Needlefish, and Speedy Shiner spoons are all good choices for trolling.  The brown trout will often hang around schools of small kokanee.  It is a good idea to have one rod setup to catch the larger browns while trolling for rainbows and kokanee.  Try rolling shad or trolling large jointed plugs to coax them into biting.  

 

Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week Contest goes to 7-year old Ayden Lucas of Modesto.  He landed a chunky 1-pound, 13-ounce rainbow while trolling a purple Apex in 50' of water near the dam.  

Computer Security Topic of May 13 SMUG meeting

How to keep your computer safe from hackers and other security breaches will be one of the topics when the Sierra Macintosh Users Group has its monthly meeting Tuesday, May 13 beginning at 7 p.m. in the assembly room of the Ebbetts Pass Fire District, 1037 Blagen Rd., just off Highway 4.

Seth Summersett, a professional computer programmer, will be making the presentation.  He is a graduate of Bret Harte High School who has gone on to earn a masters degree in computer science.  He will be assisted by his mother, Denise, who is one of SMUG’s registered gurus.

Summersett will also give tips on how to get the most out of your iMac or iPad.  As always, any computer questions will be welcomed and encouraged.

The Calaveras County Department of Public Works, Integrated Waste Management is pleased to announce our Tire Waste Amnesty Days.  Dispose of and recycle up to 9 tires for free during our “Amnesty Days.”

This event will be held for one weekend only.

Saturday & Sunday, May 3^rd & 4^th, 2014 at the following locations.

·         Rock Creek Solid Waste Facility, Milton                                 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

·         Red Hill Yard Waste Area, Vallecito                          9:00 am – 5:30 pm

·         Wilseyville Yard Waste Area, Wilseyville              9:00 am – 5:30 pm

·         Gambi Disposal, San Andreas                                      9:00 am – 5:30 pm

This event is open to Calaveras & Alpine County residents with proper identification* and each household will be allowed to dispose of up to 9 tires**without an exemption.  If you will have 10 to 20 tires, please call Calaveras County Environmental Health at 754-6399 for information on obtaining an Exemption Authorization.  This exemption must be presented with the load at the amnesty event.

*Proof of residency will be required, either with a current driver’s license showing a Calaveras or Alpine County address or a copy of your current tax bill, which shows a property related solid waste fee.

** California State Transportation laws limit the number of tires you can haul to 9 tires.   Any loads with 10-20 tires must obtain an exemption or the amnesty waiver will not be applicable. 

Please note the Tire Amnesty fee waiver is not applicable to businesses; tractor tires; tires with rims or for loads larger than 20 tires.

Cruiser's may be closed but the show will go on - keep your eyes open for the Cruiser Mobile

It was a sad day last week as the final touches were put on closing up Cruiser's Ice Cream Parlor in Town Square.
But this will not stop the Cruiser's legacy as the Cruiser Mobile will be in full swing this summer and seen at many local and not-so-local events.
Its next event will by at the Copperopolis Town Square on May 3 for the Lake Tulloch Lions Hot Copper Nights!
So if you have a hankering for an ice cream cone...you know who/what to look for.

San Andreas – On Thursday, May 1, 2014, the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection ( CAL FIRE) will require burn permits for any outdoor burning within State Responsibility Areas of Tuolumne County, Calaveras County, Eastern Stanislaus County and Eastern San Joaquin County.   Due to the exceptionally dry conditions, burning will be limited to the hours between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 A.M.

Burglary in Copper under investigation

The Sheriff Dept was alerted on 4-14-14, of a possible burglary in the 4500 block of Moccasin Court. It appears neighbors had called the home owners and advised them that their front door was open.

Deputies arrived on scene at 3 pm.

Upon arrival it appeared the residence had been ransacked. It appeared that several items were missing including a washer and a dryer, as well as gas having been siphoned from the lawn mower. The owners met the Deputy and noted that a fishing boat was missing from the garage.
The  Deputy was able to secure evidence; cigarette butts and clothing.
The length of time the suspect was in the home has yet to be verified.
$15,000.00 in stolen or damaged property.
The burglary is still under investigation.

 I’m feeling really down in the dumps right now.  Recently I was fired from my job, and my boyfriend tells me he wants to break up after two years of us being in a relationship.  I’m feeling really rejected.  I’ve been told to count my blessings, but I sure would like to know the secret to handling rejection and picking the right people and jobs for me.  I keep making stupid mistakes and don’t know how to get past all this.  Do you have any advice for me?    Olive Jennings

Dear Olive:

Yeah, I know it’s no fun feeling rejection and not knowing how to get back on track.  I have had these moments myself from time to time, and some of my clients have shared that sometimes they don’t feel they have a lot to be thankful about.  So, you’re not alone in this rejection business.  Our life can sure hit some major road blocks.  One client of mine was told by his fiancé that the wedding was “off” and the engagement was broken.  Another man told me that his job search wasn’t going very well.  And a woman recently emailed telling me that she felt beaten up from countless rejections in her new sales position.  They felt alone but I assured them they weren’t, we’re all in the same boat, and sometimes it seems like we’re sinking fast.  But, as we all we know from our own experiences, each of us will face rejection on the road to success as we’re looking for the right answers to get back control and empowerment.  Here are a few suggestions that I have found have helped me and my clients discover the right tools to help us all move forward:
