24 October 2012, at approx. 9:13 am, an Officer observed Elvis Babcock, 35 of Sonora, walking in the downtown area. A records check on Babcock revealed he had a felony no bail warrant for his arrest for possession of a controlled substance.

Trick or Treat Street participants wanted

Each Halloween Coperopolis Town Square hosts  Trick or Treat Street where kids throughout the community can come and enjoy an evening of fun and SAFE trick or treating in Town Square.

Town Square is looking for businesses or individuals that would like to participate in this event by setting up their own trick or treat table and passing out candy or treats to the kids. (You must provide your own candy and your own table.)

"It’s a fun night! Tables need to be set up by 4:30 because the little trick or treaters start to come out about 5pm.

We welcome you to where costumes, and decorate your table to make it more festive. We will have

live music in the gazebo and its a fun Halloween celebration.

Sparkling storybook world unfolds in a fun classic for all ages

Step in to a bright, beautiful world this holiday season, as Sierra Rep presents a beloved family classic, filled with great music, zany characters and a heart-melting story of true love. Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, a musical comedy favorite for generations, plays at the Fallon House Theatre in Columbia from October 26 through December 22.

SRT Artistic Director Scott Viets and his all-star team of performers and designers are having a great time creating the “Once Upon a Time” magic.

“This show has such appeal for all ages,” Viets said. “Kids will love the enchantment, but any grown-ups expecting a ‘kiddie show’ are in for a real treat. There’s a lot of humor for them, too.”

Most everyone knows the story and the ending, of course – the fun is in the fantasy and the vivid characters: the beautiful heroine, the horrid stepsisters and their mean-spirited mother, the magical fairy godmother who is on our heroine’s side, a frazzled butler, a reluctant prince and a magical, moonlit ball where anything is possible before the clock strikes midnight.

San Andreas – On Monday, October 29, 2012 at 8AM, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) will begin transitioning toward winter preparedness in the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit (TCU).  This includes the Counties of Calaveras, Tuolumne, and those eastern portions of San Joaquin and Stanislaus that are within the State Responsibility Area.  CAL FIRE will reduce engine staffing from 21 engines to 15 engines by releasing some seasonal firefighters.   All CAL FIRE stations remain open. 

Sheriff Dept Press Release re: Burglars Arrested in Arnold

(Arnold, CA) On 10/24/12 at approx. 8:00 am a Calaveras Sheriff’s deputy responded to a residence on the 2900 block of Murphys Drive, Arnold, for a residential alarm. Once at the residence the deputy located a broken window leading into the house. He also spotted a white GMC Sierra truck parked nearby that appeared suspicious in nature. As the deputy continued to search the exterior of the residence he heard the truck start up and drive away. He radioed the truck’s description to additional deputies and Angels Camp Police Officers who were en route to the scene. An Angels Camp Police Officer located and stopped the truck near the residence. The officer and another deputy contacted two occupants of the truck, Trevor M. Azzaro (31) and Stacy F. Quashnick (32), both of Murphys.

Sonora PD Press release re: felony hit and run

24 October 2012, at approx. 9:18 pm, Officers responded to the intersection of Mono Way and Greenley Road for a reported hit and run accident. When Officers arrived, they contacted the driver of the victim vehicle, Fazlollah Salari, 51 of Jamestown, who was operating a 2000 Honda Accord. Salari related that one of her two passengers was injured as a result of the accident and medics were requested. The injured 73 year old passenger refused to be transported to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

CDCR Operation BOO

Sacramento – The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Division of Adult Parole Operations – aided by law enforcement partners statewide – is preparing to conduct the 19th annual Halloween children’s safety project, “Operation Boo.”

This year, it features CDCR’s online parent empowerment brochure.  Beginning today, the media is invited to partner with CDCR in spreading the word about how parents and guardians can help keep kids safe by using this online resource.  The Operation Boo Parent Patrol Online Guide gives suggestions for non-threatening ways to teach children how to spot and avoid potential sexual predators. The brochure also offers links to help parents pin point sex offender residences and avoid those homes while plotting their children’s trick-or-treat paths.

The Tradition

CDCR has been conducting and expanding the Operation Boo Project since 1994.  Operation Boo is held throughout California on Halloween night. State-supervised sex offenders* are monitored closely to ensure that they don’t attempt to attract children to their homes.  The special conditions of parole imposed on sex offenders for Halloween night include:

o    A 5 p.m.-to-5 a.m. curfew during which parolees must remain indoors;
o    No exterior lights may be on at their homes (to discourage children from approaching);
o    No offering of Halloween candy and no Halloween decorations;
o    Sex-offender parolees can open the door only to respond to law enforcement, such as  parole agents checking compliance.

The CBC consists of the Calaveras County Fair, Calaveras County Arts Council, Calaveras Humane Society, Calaveras Visitors Bureau, Senior Centers of Calaveras, Friends of the Calaveras Library, and Calaveras County Parks and Recreation Commission.

Concert in the Cave at Moaning Cavern

Mary Youngblood returns this year in October. These concerts are very popular and we recommend booking early to secure your spot!
Moaning Cavern is a natural, marble underground environment with a comfortable temperature of 61°F. Please dress in comfortable clothes that may get a little dirty and wear walking shoes with good traction. Please bear in mind that, as a living cave, Moaning Cavern does drip water occasionally. We call these droplets "cave kisses."
Seating is on the cavern floor. Please bring a cushion to sit on and a beach towel, or small throw. Unfortunately, chairs are not allowed. Standing in the back is permitted.
Food and drinks are not allowed in the cavern. There are no restrooms in the cavern, so plan accordingly. A flashlight is recommended to help you find your way in the parking lot after the concert. The concert lasts approximately 1 hour. 
There are two seating options. The bottom platform is where the concert takes place and seating here allows you to see the performers as well as hear them. The upper platform allows you to hear the concert without having to descend to the bottom of Moaning Cavern's main chamber.

Steak and Shrimp Fest - Youngs Payless IGA supporting our community

At the annual Copperopolis Elementary Steak and Shrimp Fest, Youngs Payless IGA Market partnered with Copperopolis Elementary for its 9th profitable and fun event, benefitting the children of our community.

According to Kevin Young, approximately 160+ meals were served and over $8,000.00 was raised for the children at Copperopolis Elementary.

In years past this money has gone to much needed school supplies in the classrooms, field trips, science camp and teacher grants for special supplies and projects in the classroom. With cuts ever present and always looming this event allows teachers and students alike to breathe a collective sigh of relief after each Steak and Shrimp Fest, knowing that education is still number one in our community.

One parent put it best, "The children are our future, its important to support those that educate them and give them the tools and supplies necessary to do the best job they can."

CAL FIRE Lifts Statewide Outdoor Burn Ban Local Bans Still in Effect

Sacramento – California’s first significant rainfall of the season, combined with cooler temperatures, has allowed CAL FIRE to lift the statewide burn ban effective Monday, October 22, 2012. CAL FIRE had suspended all residential burn permits and various types of outdoor burning within the 31 million acres of State Responsibility Area on August 15, 2012.
While the statewide burn ban is lifted, local burn bans set by CAL FIRE’s 21 operational units may still be in effect. Each of the 21 CAL FIRE unit chiefs will determine when local weather conditions will allow for safe outdoor burning. Following the lifting of local burn bans, burn permits may be required in some areas so residents should always check with their local fire station and air quality district before burning.

AB 109 - Prison realignment - one year later

It is clear that AB 109 has reduced the inmate population in the State prisons, what is not clear is the actual ramifications of this at the county level. According to CDCR AB109 has cut the number of inmates in the state's 33 prisons by more than 24,000.


At the County level the Community Corrections Partnership (CCP) developed a plan for implementation of prison realignment that was accepted by the BOS. The CCP is comprised of: the Chief Probation Officer, Chief of Police, Sheriff, District Attorney, Public Defender, Presiding Judge, and a representative from either Dept of Social service or Mental Health appointed by the BOS.

According to Sheriff Dept PIO Sgt Hewitt the Calaveras County Sheriff Dept will have an extra Deputy assigned to the Copperopolis area from 6 pm to 2 am on October 27, 2012 "to cover any additional calls brought in by the Halloween Party."  The party referenced is the Dawn of the Dub to be held at Lake Tulloch Resort. In addition to the Dawn of the Dub, the Old Corner, The Sports Pub and the CCLTOA all will be having Halloween parties, many with live music, the same evening.

BOE George Runner - New Study Shows Californians Overtaxed

SACRAMENTO – George Runner today highlighted a new report by the Tax Foundation showing that the average Californian’s tax burden worsened in 2010.

“At a time when Californians could least afford it, our state and local tax burden was among the highest in the nation,” said Runner. “This new report provides further proof that by every measure Californians are overtaxed.”

The Tax Foundation’s Annual State-Local Tax Burden Ranking estimates the average total tax burden for residents of each state. This method takes the point of view of the individual taxpayer, counting all taxes he or she pays, no matter to which state they are paid.

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,486,280 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped a foot this week, and is currently at 1002 ft. above sea level and 86ft. from full.  Water temperature has cooled a bit and is in the upper 60's to low 70's.  The lake is clear, to slightly stained. Good news, the middle ramp on Glory Hole Point is open, which makes for an easy walk.

Excel spoons continue to catch quality fish. Dan Clinton of Sacramento landed this hefty 2-pound, 14-ounce brown trolling an Excel spoon in 65-foot of water, by the 49 bridge.

Olsen to host State Parks Appreciation Night 10-23-12

Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto, will be honoring organizations from her district that were successful in preventing closures of their local State Parks on Tuesday, October 23 in Sonora. Supporters of Railtown 1897, California State Mining and Mineral Museum, and Mono Lake Tufa Reserve will be in attendance to receive recognition from the California Assembly.

Angels Camp PD press release re: Felony DUI

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Shortly after 0200 hours, 10/21/12, an Angels Camp Police Department officer was in the parking lot of the police department when he heard a loud motor vehicle collision, near the intersection of state highways 4 and 49. As the officer responded to that location, he observed two vehicles with significant damage driving south on SR 49. He followed the two vehicles, which ended up turning onto Demarest Street and then into the parking lot of Mike’s Pizza where they finally stopped. Both of the vehicles were determined to have been involved in a collision near the previously mentioned intersection.

Update on Bob - 7 months later - a local success story

It has been 7 months since Bob’s accident and he has really come a long way, farther than any of us would have ever thought he would. It has been a really hard road for him but he is determined, he wants to be able to go back to work and be who he was before the accident. When he first came home he could not even sit up, feed himself, understand what was going on or even communicate well with us.  He never made it to the rehab facility that he was suppose to go to but with home health and now out patient therapy he is walking with the use of a cane and getting around pretty good. We have gone to Copper Fire Bingo, Bret Hart Football Homecoming game and even the Cow Pie Social last weekend. What really tickles Bob is when we run into some of the firefighters and paramedics that were there at the scene, he is so thankful for all they did and he gets a chance to thank them.  I personally think he gets a kick out of seeing how amazed they are at how good he is doing.  He still has a long road ahead, he needs to have his left knee replaced but he has to wait for the bones to heal more.  Hopefully after the surgery he will be able to walk without assistance but when it comes down to it at least he has both legs to stand on and he is here with us.  I would love to thank everyone for their caring and support.

Copper Kinders learn fire safety

In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, October 7-13, Copperopolis Elementary kindergarten classes took a walking field trip the the Copperopolis Fire Protection District Station #1 on Main Street Wednesday October 10, 2012 to learn hands-on fire prevention skills from Engineer Nick Maness and Firefighter Kyle Nordvik.

The children practiced stop-drop-roll and discussed the importance of an exit plan in case of a fire and the importance of a family meeting place and a family emergency plan.

Letter to the Editor -Voting yes on Measure C may mean the difference between life and death.

  Please don’t confuse Measure C with the newly imposed fire protection tax that we have all received they are not the same thing.  If Measure C does not pass then it will mean that we may lose some of the life saving resources that we now have.  Delaying responders to accidents, fires and other life threatening situations when we live where we do can mean loss of life, without the rapid response from our firefighters and paramedics Bob would not have had a chance.  It was a bad, bad accident and it took them a long time to get him out of the wreckage then up to where they could fly him to the hospital.  If he had to wait in that wreckage for help from Angels Camp or Sonora he would have been gone before they got there. Please make sure that you read and understand what each measure, proposition and candidate is about, go and vote on Election Day, please vote yes on Measure C and help it pass.  I thank you and most of all Bob is here to thank you too.

Jugglers Highlight 15th Teddy Bear Tea

The Giant Teddy Bear, Jugglers, Ballerinas and Clowns all join Santa and Mrs. Claus for the 15^th Annual Soroptimist Teddy Bear Tea, Sunday, November 4^th at Frogtown in Angels Camp! CFPD Accepts Board member resignation

After 18 years of service to the Copperopolis Fire Protection District Director Barbara Cheney has resigned citing that it is "time to take care of myself and do some other things He (God) has in mind for me. He is not through with me yet."

Cheney submitted her resignation papers on September 27, 2012. Her resignation was accepted at the October 19, 2012 CFPD board meeting and will become effective November 30, 2012.

Cheney's resignation creates a vacany on the board of directors which will require an appointment by the board to fill. If the CFPD board is not able to appoint within a certain time frame, the Board of Supervisors has jurisdiction to make an appointment.

Chief Kovacs stated that the district will make public the vacant position after contacting county counsel for guidance.

CCOE presentation on Prop 30 and Prop 38 "Cuts are the new normal"

The Calaveras County Office of Education presented an informational presentation of Proposition 30 and Proposition 38 (both on the November ballot) - the implications and ramifications of both as well as the far reaching effects of the current budget crisis.

Each school district in Calaveras County was represented and each representative made a small presentation as to their particular districts current funding, budgets and forecasts for the next year or more. Both Vallecito and Mark Twain stated their 3 year budget reflects potential budget cuts based on non-passage of either Proposition and allows for sufficient reserves to continue functionality while Calaveras Unified and Bret Harte expressed budgetary concerns with respect to reserves after the 12/13 fiscal year.

Each district was vocal in their agreement with Bret Harte Superintendent/Principal Michael Chimente's statement, "we try to keep the cuts as far away from the kids" as possible. Each district reiterating their sole purpose "to educate our future."

       On 10/12/12 at around 1130 a.m. Dep. Rod Hobbs was patrolling the Crystal falls area and noticed a vehicle stopped at Crystal Lake Drive and Wasatch Drive, idling in the roadway. Due to a rash of burglaries in the area Dep. Hobbs became suspicious and ran the license plate.
