Monique Arteaga is a 6 year old Kindergartner in Ms. Vail's class. Her favorite part of the day in school is playing, yet she says she enjoys math. "It's fun! We are already measuring things and we learned shapes."
She said she wrote her kindness essay about her mom and her dad and is really nervous about reading it out loud.

Relatively new to Copperopolis Monique said she "loves it up here" that she gets to ride her bike a lot "even though I fall off."

Letter from Lungren - "More of the same, time for a change"

The “new” numbers coming out of the White House’s budget for fiscal year 2013 tell an old story.  The President has repeated this story for the past three years, most recently retelling it in his State of the Union late last month.  There, he described our situation as one where unemployment is not persistent, where deficits do not soar, and where government can solve all problems.  His latest – but hardly new – budget reflects this story.

More of the Same Spending

At a time when the House is trying to work with the Senate and White House to identify real spending reductions in the face of a soaring debt that will consume on average 21.9 percent of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over the next decade1, stifling economic growth and job creation, the White House has offered a budget which would spend $47 trillion in 10 years, an increase over current projections.2  Fresh off the inaction on suggestions on reducing spending and the debt from his Simpson-Bowles Commission and the failure of the Super Committee to find significant reductions, the President is reversing course and proposing more spending.  The House and even the Senate have gotten the picture by now that we cannot afford this extravagance.  When will the Administration?

Copper Library planning Casino Night

The Copperopolis Branch Library is planning their much awaited Casino Night fundraiser scheduled for March 17, 2012.
While in the planning stages they are asking for the communities support.
"The library’s computers for public use are frequently used and outdated.  The Friends of the Library, Copperopolis Chapter-a non -profit group, is hoping to raise enough funds to update the 5 computers @ $1000.00 each."
In an effort to raise the monies needed to replace or update the computers the library is asking members of the community if they can donate a prize basket, merchandise or a gift card for the event raffle.All donations for our event are tax deductable and our Tax ID number is available upon request for your records.

Copper Cougars boys basketball take 2nd at CAZ tournament

The Copper Cougar boys basketball team took 2nd place at the CAZ tournament this past weekend in Jenny Lind/Valley Springs.  The team will be bringing home a large trophy for the school.

Chase Collins~also received a plaque for All Tournament. This award is given based on votes from coaches of all the other teams.

Russ Thomas campaign kick-off event

Russ Thomas supporters came out in mass to Snaps in Town Square on Thursday night, 2-16-12, to chat and mingle with friends and meet with the candidate all the while enjoying fine foods from local restuarants and wines from Calaveras vineyards. The event hosted and paid for by Supporters of Russ Thomas was the first in a series of events and meetings where the people of District 4 can meet Thomas.

Thomas, previous District 5 Supervisor representing Copperopolis, is now seeking election to the seat of District 4 Supervisor, running against incumbant Tom Tryon.

Kindness Hero Essay Contest

Each year, for the past 20 years, students at Copperopolis Elementary and Mark Twain Elementary have been participating in a Kindness Hero Essay Contest during Kindness Week.

The students from grade K through 8 each compose an essay featuring their kindness hero and explaining why they chose that person. A kindness hero can be a family member, friend, teacher, etc. Teachers then choose only one essay from the whole class and submit them to a review board for further judging. When the judging is complete the children with the 'winning' essays will then participate in an open reading night at the Angels Camp City Council meeting, where they wil read their essays. They will also head over to Foothill Village to make a presentation to the Seniors in residence. A representative from Foothill Village said that the residents are so looking forward to the reading day. While it is an essay contest, each child is a winner as they learn not only how to compose an essay but they also  learn that kindness, a seemingly simple act, can touch someone so deeply it can leave a lasting impression.

The kindness essay contest is overseen and coordinated by teachers Sandy Airola and Tamsen Lenore of Mark Twain.

Peter Uyeyama DDS began his dental career in the Army during the Vietnam Era. Trained as a medic, Peter fully expected to serve his country in Vietnam so he was quite surprised when he found himself assigned to dental hygienist training. “So while most of the medics went to Nam I was stationed in Ft. Dix New Jersey seeing troops who were on their way to Nam and their dependents.” This began his dental career.

By 1983 Peter had opened an office in Modesto and expanded with a second office in Copper in 1996. Since then his children have gone into the dental field and he now works solely in Copper while his son mans the Modesto practice.

Snaps features winemaker Chuck Hovey for wine tasting tonight 2-17-12

Gianelli Vineyards and their winemaker Chuck Hovey will be at Snap's on Friday, February 17.  Vintages with romantic names  like Vermentino, Fiano, Aglianico, Montepulciano and Nino will be offered for tastings.  This will be the first time we have had the opportunity to taste the Italian varietals offered by this winery. It is a beautiful extension of Valentine's Day.  

The event will be from 5:00pm to 8:00pm and Danny Burton will be there playing his acoustic guitar and there will be complimentary hors d'oeuvres.  A flight of five tastings will be offered at $8.00 and a glass of your favorite will be $8.00.  The weather seems to be holding up, so come enjoy the fireside, the music, the wine and the shops of Town Square.

Assemblymember Olsen Introduces Legislative Transparency Act

Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, has introduced AB 1730 to increase transparency and accountability in the Legislature by requiring more disclosure of legislative budgets, additional campaign reporting and added time for public review of legislation. “Each year, the Legislature passes bills requiring greater transparency of various agencies and local governments. However, it fails to hold itself accountable to those same standards of open, transparent, citizen-driven government,” said Olsen. 

Sheriff Dept Press Release re:horse neglect

On 2/15/12 at approximately 1:30 pm, Calaveras Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Division executed a search warrant at 4549 Red Hill Road and seized 15 horses due to neglect. No arrests were made at the time.
Kimberly and Paul Paulden, owners and care takers of the horses, were contacted by Animal Services in September 2011 regarding skinny horses and were discovered to be caring for over 20 horses. Paulden released ten of the twenty horses to Horse Plus Rescue, two of which died after transport to the rescue in September.

Safety tips to protect your children from burn injuries from CAL FIRE

Across California thousands of people are burned every year in fires and countless lives are lost, including young children.

CAL FIRE is teaming up with fire departments across the country to highlight the fire risks and burn injury prevention during the winter months for National Burn Awareness Week. This year fire officials are focusing on the increased risk to children for burn injuries and offer safety tips to keep them protected from burn injuries.

Each year approximately 465 children ages 14 and under die due to unintentional fires or from burn related injuries, with children ages 3 and younger at the greatest risk, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A 2009 report from the American Burn Association indicates that the most common cause of hospitalizations to children under 5 years of ages is scald burns caused from hot liquids. Hot tap water accounts for nearly 1 in 4 of all scald burns among children and is associated with more deaths and hospitalizations than any other hot liquid burns.

Gov Brown announces more appointments

Jim Evans, 42, of Sacramento, has been appointed deputy secretary for communications and strategic planning at the Business Transportation and Housing Agency. He has been a consultant for Senator Mark DeSaulnier since 2009. He was communications director for Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg from 2006 to 2009 and communications director for Senator Joe Dunn from 2005 to 2006.

Sheriff to hold multiple Town Hall meetings

Sheriff Gary Kuntz would like to announce to the citizens of Calaveras County that he will be hosting town hall meetings in several Calaveras County towns throughout 2012. The focus of these meetings is to discuss law enforcement related issues surrounding the communities. Navy deploys amphibious assault vessels to the Asia-Pacific theater

China maritime naval buildup of amphibious landing ships comes amid mounting maritime tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, a possible geopolitical stress point in the coming decade.

Japan and China are locking horns over islands each claims in the East China Sea; Vietnam, the Philippines. Other nations are disputing territorial claims with China over parts of the South China Sea thought to be rich in oil and gas.

The U.S. Navy has announced it will deploy its own new amphibious assault vessels, the Littoral Combat Ships, to the "maritime crossroads" of the Asia-Pacific theater, stationing them in Singapore and perhaps the Philippines.

State Controller releases January Cash Update

State Controller John Chiang today released his monthly report covering California's cash balance, receipts and disbursements in January, showing monthly revenues came in $528 million below the latest projections contained in the Governor's proposed 2012-13 Budget. When compared against the 2011-12 Budget Act, January revenues were $1.2 billion below estimates.

"January revenues were disappointing on almost every front," said Chiang. "Thankfully the decisive actions taken recently by the State to stabilize its cash flow will ensure that California can pay its bills through the end of the fiscal year."

The Controller's Office had warned the Governor and Legislature that General Fund cash could dip below the minimum safety level of $2.5 billion on February 29, and slip into the red in March. To address this potential cash problem, the Controller's Office worked with the Department of Finance and the Treasurer's Office to develop a series of short-term cash solutions to get the State though what is expected to be a seven-week cash shortfall. They include additional external borrowing through the Treasurer's Office, a small number of delayed payments, and temporary borrowing from the University of California and California State University systems.  The State also has access to an additional $865 million of internal borrowable funds, due to recent legislation (SB 95) signed by the Governor last week.

Eric Bavaro joins CFPD Volunteers

18 year old Eric Bavaro has always wanted to work in a field that would help others. He had one stipulation to that desire, he would also like an "adrenalin rush" with the job. Firefighter naturally came to mind.

Eric spent time as an explorer with the Ceres Fire Department while in high school and then enrolled in Columbia College to take more fire fighting courses.

When he learned of the need at Copper Fire for volunteer firefighters he visited the Chief and asked where he could sign up.

He quickly found himself enrolled in the Calaveras County Volunteer Fire Academy. He has found the first responder portion of the academy challengeing but says he like sto challenge himself "to reach higher goals." His family is very supportive of his desire to become a firefighter. After the academy he hopes to land an intern position, but if not is still planning on volunteering.

The Calaveras County Public Health Department is promoting Preteen Vaccine Week, February 12-18, 2012, as part of a statewide effort to remind families of preteens about recommended and required immunizations for 11-and 12-year olds.

Dr. Dean Kelaita, County Health Officer, encouraged families of preteens to schedule a doctor visit and get vaccines they need to stay healthy and meet the Tdap school entry requirement for incoming 7^th graders.

CA prison officers spent more than $1 million on political advice

The California Correctional Peace Officers Association paid a total $1.1 million to four political consultants and a political lawyer last year, according to documents the union filed with the state.
Media strategy firm The Battin Group (formerly Voter Strategies Inc. and run by former Republican lawmaker Jim Battin) topped the list with $342,000 from CCPOA., followed by $220,000 to J. S. Peace & Associates, which is headed by former state lawmaker and "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" producer Steve Peace.

Other CCPOA expenditures in 2011 included $200,000 to former Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata's firm, Perata Consulting LLC, about $200,000 more to attorney Wayne Ordos and $157,000 to McNally Temple Associates Inc., another consulting firm. The union also gave $100,000 to the California Independent Voter Project, a non-profit organization that offers to pay the expenses of state lawmakers who attend an annual Hawaii conference. Peace is one of the non profit's principals.

CCPOA, like many players in the political arena gave money to both sides of the aisle. Last year it wrote checks totaling $110,000 to the California Democratic Party and $25,000 to the California Republican Party.

Are we really out of Iraq? - By, Charity Maness

I, for one, was thrilled that our troops were coming home from Iraq. But did anyone really think it would be that simple?

We still have thousands of American men and women serving in Iraq...not from the Department of Defense...but from the State Department.

The small military presence left in Iraq under the Obama administrations plan is limited to several hundred officers located at embassy offices assisting Iraqis with purchasing equipment and placing equipment in the field. However, what is left out of this equation is the 6,000 to 7,000 State Department workers that were deployed to fill the void when the US Army left Iraq.

Lungrens reaction to White House 'accommodation' of First Ammendment Rights

Congressman Dan Lungren (R-Gold River) today reacted to the White House’s “accommodation” of First Amendment rights to conscientious objectors of his controversial health care law.  He stated:

 “While we were assured at the time of its passage that the health care bill was not about the imposition of social policy on the American public and institutions of our society, we now know otherwise. The idea that insurance companies are going to provide free coverage for items contained in the Administration’s order reflects a misunderstanding of the business of insurance.  Under its ‘accommodation,’ the religious employer continues to pay premiums that contribute to the revenues of the insurers.

Vice President Xi is set to replace the staid Hu Jintao as Communist Party leader late this year, then succeed him as president in 2013.

Much of Xi’s visit will be in the company of Vice President Joe Biden, who went to China as Xi’s guest in August.

Though the visit will cover issues affecting the US and China it is viewed more as a diplomatic visit to strengthen ties.

Gov Brown announces appointments

Lisa Barkett, 52, of La Jolla, has been appointed to the Race Track Leasing Commission as a representative of the 22nd District Agricultural Association, San Diego Fair Board. She has been vice president of Merjan Financial Corporation since 1989. Barkett earned a Juris Doctorate degree from Pepperdine University School of Law. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Barkett is a Democrat.

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,966,988 acre-feet of water. The lake level has been steady for the last two months. It is currently at 1049 ft. above sea level and 39 ft. from full. The water temperature is 51-53 degrees and crystal clear.

Trout: Still pretty good! Fishing was a little slower than it has been this last week, due to the full moon. Trout are right up in the shallows, spawning. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

San Joaquin County Sheriff press releases re:San Andreas remains identified

The San Joaquin County Coroner's Office has made a preliminary identification of the skull and teeth discovered in San Andreas Thursday morning, February 9, 2012.

After a forensic dental examination the skull was identified as Cynthia Vanderheiden.

The remians will be submitted to the California Department of Justice for identification and confirmation.

On February 11, 2012, Angels Camp Police Officers made a traffic enforcement stop in the 300 block of S. Main St., on a vehicle driven by Randy J Aitken, 25 of Angels Camp.  Aitken was found to be driving under the influence of a controlled substance and driving on a suspended California driver license. 

 

Governor announces appointments

A. Charles Crabb, 60, of San Luis Obispo, has been appointed to the designated local authority for the former Pismo Beach redevelopment agency, in San Luis Obispo County. Crabb has been a program advisor at the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation since 2010 and assistant to the provost at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo since 2010. He was director of education and operations at the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation from 2007 to 2010, government affairs manager at the California Farm Bureau Federation from 2006 to 2007, dean of the College of Agriculture at California State University, Chico from 1999 to 2006, and regional director for the division of agriculture and natural resources at the University of California, Office of the President from 1995 to 1999. Crabb was a professor and administrator at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo from 1978 to 1995. He earned a doctorate in ecology from the University of California, Davis. This position does not require Senate confirmation. Crabb is a Republican.

Angels - Murphys Rotary donates dictionaries to Copper School 3rd graders

On February 9, 2012, representatives from the Angels Murphys Rotary and a representative from the West Calaveras Rotary visited Copperopolis Elementary School bearing gifts.

As they were welcomed to Mrs Pino's third grade class the room was hushed with anticipation, oohs and ahhs were heard as Chief Jeff Millar opened the hardbound dictionaries to show the many full color pictures. Each child happily received their own dictionary and chatted among themselves as to what use they would put their new dictionary to and challenged each other with words to look up.

The next class visited was Mrs. Young's third grade classroom. These children were not expecting visitors and were surprised and excited at the news. They bubbled with ideas on how they would use their own dictionary. When Jesse Powers saw the color photos he excitedly announced "when I research dinosuars I can learn more now!" With that said, Chief Millar turned to the page that listed dinosaurs...a full page of pictures greeted a thrilled beyond words Jesse.

Calaveras County Kindness Week 2-13 through 2-19-2012

12,000 kindness light blue ribbons with pins, miles of light blue ribbon, and Kindness Zone signs will be distributed throughout Calaveras County, in schools, businesses and beyond starting Feb. 13.   22 Kindness Kits will be distributed to the Calaveras schools that include pass it on ribbons and blue ribbon to display, Distribution will be accomplished through voluntary “Kindness Crusaders”  in each school.

Hero Essay Contest: Mark Twain Elementary School will present Hero Essays at the Angels Camp City Council meeting in the Bret Harte High School multipurpose room (behind the Bret Harte Theater) Tuesday, Feb. 21 starting at 6 p.m. Master of Ceremonies is Jill Bergantz.

Friends of the Animal Community Adoption Day Copperopolis

Second skull found outside former Shermaine home

More human remains were found outside Wesley Shermaines previous home outside San Andreas after scent dogs gave indication of possible remains.
Publics Works utilized a backhoe to move dirt in the surrounding area. The search will continue over the next couple of days by San Joaquin County Sheriff.
The remians have been sent to a lab for positive identification.

Statement by Assemblymember Olsen on the Governor’s Action to Protect Rural School Bus Funding

Today, Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto, issued the following statement in response to the Governor signing Senate Bill 81, which protects budget funding for school transportation:  “The school transportation cuts that went into effect last month are nothing short of devastating to students in rural and low income districts. Education should be one of our top priorities in California, and the only way many of our children are getting educated is if we provide a way for them to get to school. “I am really pleased that the Governor signed SB 81 today. This measure will keep the buses  rolling and ensure that our kids will be treated fairly across the state regardless of where they live or where they go to school.” For background on the school transportation cuts click here. Calling all veterans of foreign wars

The Copperopolis VFW Post 12118 will be having an installation ceremony 2-19-12 recognizing the formation of the post. This ceremony will be attended by officials from the State VFW, local officials and leaders from the community.
Its not too late to become one of the founding members of the VFW Post 12118.
