From Olive to Oil
On a beautiful fall day in early November my husband and I were invited to watch the milling of olives for olive oil with John Ribeira, owner of Copperopolis Olive Oil Company and miller of olives on the side. Seeing as how we had picked olives for over and hour a few weeks earlier in my quest for the newest adventure or experience Copper has to offer, I thought it fitting that we should witness the end product.
We went prepared to see some smooshing, some blending and then be told to come back in 6 months when it was done, much like wine. Well were we ever surprised!
We witnessed olives to olive oil in just over an hour! This may not sound fascinating to you but with my ever growing addiction to the variety of olive oils at Copperopolis Olive Oil Company I was thrilled to see how this process took place.

attempts at community plans, the committee would like suggestions, edits

facts may be helpful when formulating your suggestions.

The Calaveras Humane Society can help defray some of the expense of spay and neuter operations on dogs and cats. We offer discount vouchers to county residents throughout the year.
Thanks to the Winterceek Grant Foundation and matching funds by CHS, a CHS spay/neuter voucher will pay the following towards your vet bill:
Special Note: The Ryan Newman Foundation and matching funds by the CHS for Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Huskies, Malamutes, Doberman Pinschers, Chow Chows, Akitas, and mixes of these dog breeds has now expired; however, the regular spay and neuter assistance program is available for these breeds.

determine the best use of land within a boundary for the benefit of the members of the
community, with goals of improving social and economic environments and ensuring orderly development.
The CCPAC meetings began in earnest in April of 2012, with each agenda produced and presented by the county planning department, with community boundary and land designation taking center stage. At each of the meetings these issues continue. Vision statements were just recently brought up at the October meeting after the committee was asked to go about town and look for areas where they would like schools, parks, etc, without knowledge of goals or vision, let alone land use designation for the areas in question. In addition, after multiple requests from the committee for the county to produce a boundary map that they had requested, one was finally produced following property lines and AFTER county claimed to have discussed the land use designation with the potentially affected property owners.

Calaveras County Correctional Administrator role questioned
Currently, Chief Probation Officer Teri Hall is the Correctional
Administrator for Calaveras County, an appointed position through the Board of Supervisors. The title which, under AB109, authorizes her to "offer a program under which
minimum security inmates and low-risk offenders committed to a county
jail or other county correctional facility or granted probation, or
inmates participating in a work furlough program, may voluntarily
participate in a home detention program in lieu of confinement in the
county jail or other county correctional facility under the auspices of
the probation officer" In addition the bill enhances authorization to
her "to offer a
voluntary home detention program to include all inmates and
additionally subject those inmates to involuntary participation in a
home detention program. The bill would provide that the board of
supervisors of any county may authorize the correctional administrator
to offer a program under which inmates being held in lieu of bail may be
placed in an electronic monitoring program, as specified. The bill
would establish criteria for inmates to be eligible for the electronic
monitoring program. The bill would make it a misdemeanor for any inmate
who is a participant in an electronic monitoring program to fail to
comply with the prescribed rules and regulations. By creating a new
crime, the bill would impose a state-mandated local program."
This is cause for concern with Sheriff Kuntz as inmates he feels should not be released from the jail have been released in the past as per the Correctional Administrator's authorization. Recently an inmate was released to probation due to Correctional Administrator Teri Hall's authorization against the Sheriff's advisement as he stated he "considered them to be a danger to society."

At the Copper Fire Board 11-8-12 board meeting the announcement was made that the District would begin accepting letters of interest for the recently vacated CFPD Board position due to the resignation of long time board member Barbara Cheney.The Board had previously accepted Cheney's resignation to be effective November 30, 2102.

Taste of the Holidays 2012
According to Copper Parks and Rec spokesperson ticket sales for the first annual Taste of the Holidays held on 11-10-12 reached almost 300. The fund raiser, raising funds for parks and rec, was considered to be a smashing success.
Helping parents enjoy a peaceful and fun event Town Square had a Grandmothers Room where parents could drop off their children to make Christmas tree decorations for a Christmas tree display. Each store within Town Square held a different vintner and a variety of foods and delicacies, something for every palate.

8:00 AM, Saturday, November 10, 2012, the California Department of
Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) announces restriction on burn
hours will be lifted on permissive burn days on private lands within the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit. This
includes the counties of Calaveras, Tuolumne, and those eastern
portions of San Joaquin and Stanislaus that are within the State
Responsibility Area. Lifting the burn hour restrictions also applies to
lands within the Direct Protection Area (DPA) of the Stanislaus
National Forest.

Copper Firefighter resigns after being placed on administrative leave
A Copper Engineer Firefighter previously on administrative leave has voluntarily resigned.
According to Chief Kovacs the name of the Engineer cannot be released at this time yet the resignation was accepted in late October.
There currently is no testing process in place or current intention to hire stated Kovacs as the district "has not made a decision about future staffing of the fire district, that is a Board decision."

According to the Calaveras County Elections Office the outstanding 2,586 absenteee ballots are currently being processed and the 566 provisional ballots should be processed by 5 pm this evening, 11-9-12.

Credit Card Theft/identity theft on the rise
Recently the Copper Gazette has received emails regarding the rise of identity theft in the Copperopolis area. Upon contacting the Sheriff's Office it was confirmed that identity theft is on the rise not only in the county but in the state and throughout the nation.
Sgt Hewit, Sheriff Dept PIO stated, "People need to be diligent about watching their bills and reporting suspicious purchases on their cards right away. Most of these types of crimes are being committed by people outside of California and the country. Because of this it is very difficult for us to pursue this crime."

collected $1.86 billion in general fund sales and use tax revenue last

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12118 has encountered a lot of firsts this year. Having just officially formed this past March, the newest Calaveras County VFW Post, based out of Copperopolis, will hold its first-ever Copperopolis Veterans Day Parade from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, on Main Street.
Post Commander Allen Gilbert hopes that the event draws enough support and enthusiasm to warrant an annual parade each year.

Sheriff Dept Press release re:Two Adults Arrested at the Sheriff’s Office in Unrelated Bizarre Incidents
(San Andreas, CA) On 11/08/12 deputies at the Calaveras County Sheriff’s
Office arrested two adults in unrelated matters who displayed bizarre
behavior while conducting business at the Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 7:20 am while walking through a public area outside the Sheriff’s Office building to report for work, a female Sheriff’s Service Technician was chased and yelled at by a male adult. The male was later identified as Harold Wayne Bunnell (59) of Valley Springs. The Service Technician immediately ran inside the Sheriff’s Office and summoned help from a deputy inside. The deputy contacted Suspect Bunnell and determined that he was under the influence of a controlled substance, allegedly methamphetamine. Suspect Bunnell, who is on probation, was reportedly at the Sheriff’s Office to turn himself in on a misdemeanor arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a prior Driving Under the Influence charge. Suspect Bunnell was arrested and booked into the Calaveras County Jail on the outstanding warrant as well as the new charge of violating of Health & Safety Code 11550 (A): Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance (misdemeanor).
At approximately 7:20 am while walking through a public area outside the Sheriff’s Office building to report for work, a female Sheriff’s Service Technician was chased and yelled at by a male adult. The male was later identified as Harold Wayne Bunnell (59) of Valley Springs. The Service Technician immediately ran inside the Sheriff’s Office and summoned help from a deputy inside. The deputy contacted Suspect Bunnell and determined that he was under the influence of a controlled substance, allegedly methamphetamine. Suspect Bunnell, who is on probation, was reportedly at the Sheriff’s Office to turn himself in on a misdemeanor arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a prior Driving Under the Influence charge. Suspect Bunnell was arrested and booked into the Calaveras County Jail on the outstanding warrant as well as the new charge of violating of Health & Safety Code 11550 (A): Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance (misdemeanor).
Letter to the Editor re: burglary in Copperopolis
I have lived in the beautiful Sierra foothills for my whole life. I
worked hard, was a single Mom who raised a US Marine who is a veteran of
Operation Enduring Freedom. After my 42nd birthday this year I was
finally able to buy my first home. I have been in my home for less than 6
months. I was so proud!!
Today, after having had surgery on Tuesday and feeling just well enough to go to work for a few hours, I came home to find my home had been broken into. The Sheriff said it was likely kids, since they didn't take anything big. But they did walk away from my ransacked home with many memories.

SNOW LEVELS HAVE DROPPED TO AROUND 2500 FEET AND COULD DROP LOCALLY LOWER IN HEAVIER SHOWERS THIS MORNING. HIGHER FOOTHILL LOCATIONS COULD SEE AN INCH OF ADDITIONAL SNOWFALL THIS MORNING AS THE MAIN UPPER LOW CONTINUES ON ITS TRIP TO THE EAST. A COUPLE INCHES OF ADDITIONAL SNOWFALL WILL BE POSSIBLE ABOVE THE 5000 FOOT LEVEL. Copperopolis Food Pantry needs your help to help others
Recently the Copperopolis Food Pantry was the recipient of a grant from the Calaveras Community Foundation that allowed them to add many protein based products to their distribution bags as well as some more produce. While the grant was generous, the need to feed more and more people never diminishes. Now faced with feeding in excess of 55 families through the winter months the food pantry is once again having food drives throughout town and realizing an increased need for funds and foods.
With the bad economy and the loss of seasonal jobs imminent, food pantry coordinators Lorraine and David Crawford hope to be able to feed all that come to the pantry in need. "We are resourceful and find the best deals where we can." Said David as he pointed to some cases of tomato sauce that he and Lorraine had found at Costco for a better price than they would have paid through the state and federal food programs they regularly purchase food through. Both Lorraine and David have become quite adept at grant writing and at moving boxes upon boxes of food. David jokes that he would like a stronger back but is clearly happy to be helping out where there is a real need. Lorraine said that they budget throughout the year knowing that more families are fed during the winter months but that "prices have raised so much on staples like tuna and peanut butter" that it stretches their already stretched budget.

Copper Senior Brittany Schulte selected as Rotary Student of the Month
On November 8, 2012 Copper Resident Brittany Schulte was recognized by the Angels - Murphys Rotary Club at a luncheon at Ironstone Vineyards as their Student-of-the-Month.
According to a letter sent to the parents of Brittany, Normand and Michelle Walton, Brittany had been selected for this honor "by the Bret Harte High School Faculty." Brittany is a Senior attending Bret Harte High School.
Brittany is active in school sports (volleyball, powder puff football, soccer), was in the 2012 Homecoming court, is in the Spanish Honorary Society, Leadership, Link Crew, and currently a student body officer. Brittany also holds a 3.8 GPA.

Chief Probation Officer answers Gazette questions re: AB109
On October 1, 2012 the state of California had been operating under the prison realignment bill AB 109 for one year. Within weeks of the AB 109 anniversary Calaveras County Probation Department announced that they would be contracting out the Adult Day Reporting Center operations to BI Inc, a company specializing in electronic monitoring and probation style reporting centers. The Gazette took the opportunity to ask Chief Probation Officer Teri Hall a few questions.
When will the contract with BI Inc be signed? Unsure, the CCP is discussing the construction budget.
According to BI electronic monitoring will not be within their duties for Calaveras County, how do you plan on handling the issue of lack of cell service in the county with regards to electronic monitoring? As you know, cell service is a challenge for everyone who lives in the Foothill region. We work with the offenders that live in remote areas, to have them respond daily to a location that will allow the GPS points to load onto the satellite.

Hello Loyal Customers and Friends, it's time again for the "Coat for Lunch" program at the Pickle Patch. Bring us a New Childs Coat sizes 6 thru 14 and we will buy your Lunch! Last year our generous community provided 78 coats to freezing little children so my goal this year is to beat that number. I am hoping to collect enough coats to not only hand out at San Andreas Elementary but also to Moke Hill children as well, possibly up the hill to West Point and Railroad Flat too.

In a major defeat for taxpayers,
Assembly candidate Frank Bigelow has the lead in semi-official results for
California’s new 5th Assembly District.
As of Wednesday morning, the results are 52.7% for Frank Bigelow and
47.3% for Rico Oller with 100% of precincts reporting. San Andreas businessman Rico Oller was
outspent nearly 4 to 1 in the primary and more than 5 to 1 in the general
election by Sacramento special interest groups who wanted an Assemblyman they
can influence.

am deeply disappointed by the
results,” Oller said. “I was looking
forward to representing the foothills in the Assembly and protecting
taxpayers. I want to thank those who supported my campaign.”

Sonora PD press release re:heroin sales arrest
6 Nov. 2012, at approx. 10:59 am, Officers were dispatched to the 200
block of Stockton Rd. regarding a reported reckless driver. The
reporting party provided a license plate number of the responsible
vehicle, which came back registered to a person who lives on the 500
block of Dragoon Circle, inside the City limits.
Officers responded to the residence and made contact with the registered owner, Matthew Wechsler, 44 of Sonora. While officers were speaking with Wechsler, they noticed a fresh injection mark on his arm, which was still bleeding. He also had a fresh ligature mark just above his elbow.
