So you've decided to move to the country where that crazy thing we call friendship takes on a whole new meaning.
In the country we enjoy the same kind of things that you and your city friends might enjoy - just with a bit of a country twist.
A good friend in the city will gladly enjoy a quiet relaxing morning at the salon with you, partaking of a wonderfully decadent pedicure and a luxurious leg massage. A country friend will do the same but then will accompany you to the feed store, help you load a ton of hay in your pick up, follow you home, and then help you stack it in your barn. (All the while in sandals so as not to ruin their new pedicure.)
A good friend in the city will be more than happy to head to the bar to shoot some pool with you after a hard day at the office. A country friend will also gladly, and deservedly, head to the bar to shoot some pool with you after a hard day at work and after helping you run two acres of barbed wire. (You have to buy though.)

Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program Is Looking for a Few Good Mentors!
Everyone can use another good friend in their lives, and there are kids in Copperopolis who want YOU to be that friend.
The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program (CYMP) has been matching eager local youth with volunteer mentors since 2003. The mission of the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program is to connect Calaveras County young people in first through twelfth grades with safe, positive, adult role models who will offer support, guidance, friendship, and help the youth make healthy life decisions. Potential mentors are thoroughly screened to ensure the safety of everyone in the program. Once matched, mentors and mentees spend a couple of hours a week together for at least a year doing things they both enjoy—sports, crafts, cooking a meal together, or working on a project. Mentors receive extensive pre-match training and then additional training throughout the year, plus regular monitoring of the friendship, as-needed support, and invitations to group field trips and events. It’s fun!
Julia Tidball, principal at Copper Elementary and superintendent for Mark Twain Union School District, says there are several students she would like to recommend for the program. “We have many students who would enjoy and benefit greatly by having a mentor,” she says. “But I don’t want them to have to wait for a match. If we had some wonderful Copper community members who would step up and let us know they are interested in mentoring, I would quickly recommend kids for the program.”

Throughout 2011 Umpqua Bank, Primo's Pizzeria and Payless IGA have continuously supported the Copperopolis Volunteer Firefighter Association - helping with donations of food, raffle prizes, and ongoing community support. In order to show their appreciation the Association presented those businesses with plaques recognizing and thanking them for their support.

Spring Recital - a musical treat
Each year Patt Hopper's piano students, ranging in age from 5 to 15, show off their piano prowess at a Spring recital. Practicing for almost a full year, the students look forward to showing all what they have accomplished.
When Patt began 'teaching' piano six years ago she felt it was a "calling" when she decided to help one young girl with "refocusing" her life by spending time with her and sharing her musical talent the mold was set. It grew from there as more people needed and wanted that enrichment in their children's lives. "Every child that I have interacted with was there for a reason; I believe it's more than music and playing the piano." Said Patt, trusting and believing fully that this endeavor is part of God's plan for her.
The recital, held at the Armory Sunday March 4, 2012, was well attended by family and friends. Each child performed with the utmost dignity and professionalism - most concluded their performance with a curtsey or a bow. The pieces ranged from simple to intensely complicated and from funny to emotionally moving. As a bonus, there was a dance performance and grandfather/grand-daughter banjo piano duet. All the youth talent was simple amazing!

Lungren votes for a pro-growth jobs bill
Today Congressman Dan Lungren (R-Gold River, CA) voted to increase the growth of startups and small businesses, increase capital formation, and pave the way for more small-scale businesses to go public and create new jobs.
The bi-partisan JOBS (Jumpstart Our Business Startups) Act – H.R 3606, passed the house by a vote of 390 - 23.
Congressman Lungren released the following statement after the vote:
“Americans need jobs and today’s passage of the JOBS Act will help accomplish this goal. Small businesses are the risk takers that drive job creation across America and I voted to give them the tools they need to succeed.
“I was pleased to hear the President himself supported this legislation along with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the American Bankers Association, the Financial Services Forum, the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council, Independent Community Bankers of America, SecondMarket and SIFMA.
“This common sense legislation will remove Washington red tape and help small business prosper - not stand in their way. The JOBS Act specifically addresses the following;

Debbie Ponte, Executive Director at Foothill Village, has filed her declaration of candidacy for District 4 Supervisor today - 3/8/12 - at the Calaveras County Elections office.
Debbie is a resident of Angels Camp. Currently she holds the position of executive director at Foothill Village yet she has also been an Angels Camp City Council Member and is a former Mayor of Angels Camp.
Debbie holds a Bachelor’s Degree from California State University Fresno in Journalism and Public Relations.

Frog's Tooth Vineyards brings home some Silver
Copperopolis' own Frog's Tooth Vineyards brought home 3 Silver Medals from the 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
Judging at this event was intense as 65 judges within the professional industry from a variety of wine backgrounds including wine editors, executive chefs, retail wine buyers, professors, hospitality executives, scientists and of course wine makers judged the 5,500 wine entries from 1300 wineries throughout 25 states in the US.
After all the judging was complete our own Frog's Tooth brought home a silver for their:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – When it comes to buckling up, daily efforts by the public and the
California Highway Patrol (CHP) are making a difference. Every click of a seat belt represents
another life potentially saved. This is a trend the CHP strives to continue throughout the state.
“Motorists are to be commended because seat belt usage is at an all time high in California,” said
CHP Commissioner Farrow. “However, there are still a small percentage of people who have
yet to realize the benefits of passenger restraints and continue to ignore the warnings about not
buckling up. This education and enforcement campaign is aimed at saving their lives.”

New Melones Fishing Report
Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,967,207 acre-feet of water. The lake level has been steady for the last three months. It is currently at 1049 ft. above sea level and 39 ft. from full. The water temperature is quickly rising and is 52-55 degrees and crystal clear.
Gary Sisco and Mat Paredes caught 8 nice rainbows and a 6-pound catfish.
CRIME PREVENTION ADVISORY DON’T BE A VICTIM OF PHONE SCAMS message from Calaveras County Sheriff Dept
On Tuesday 3/6/12, Calaveras Sheriff received a report from a county resident who was scammed out of approximately $2,600. The victim received a phone call from a subject who sounded like their grandson. The victim was told that their grandson had caused a vehicle accident, was now in jail in Canada, and needed money wired to them. This incident serves as a reminder to beware of phone scams and stay vigilant not giving identifying information over the phone or sending money without verifying the validity of claims.
The scam for this particular case is known as the "It's me" scam. The perpetrator calls up an elderly person pretending to be a relative in distress in need of some quick cash, and asks that money be transferred into a phony bank account or wired to a location. The perpetrators usually start with “it’s me” or “it’s your favorite grandchild”, and many victims try and guess who is on the phone by using a name. The perpetrators use this as well as any other information they have found through public searches on the Internet to prey on victims. Typically, the scam artists continue and say because of an accident or problem with the family car, they need money wired to them by Western Union. Another tactic used often is perpetrators who state they are in jail and then put on another subject on the telephone who either acts as a lawyer or bail bondsman asking for money to be sent to pay for the accident or to get the supposed family member out of custody. Perpetrators have been known to beg or ask the victim not to tell other family members for fear of embarrassment or getting in trouble, but again this is a tactic used by criminals to try and stop victims from figuring the scam out. Phone scammers are very good at what they do.
