SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California
Highway Patrol (CHP) encourages parents, educators, business owners, and other
community organizations to promote a drug-free lifestyle during
National Red Ribbon Week, October 23
- 31, 2013.
The Red Ribbon Campaign originated
from an incident in Mexico City when drug traffickers
murdered Drug Enforcement Administration
Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena in 1985. This
developed the tradition of
displaying red ribbons as a symbol of intolerance toward the use of
drugs. The mission of the Red Ribbon
Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment
toward the creation of a drug-free
America.
“The Red Ribbon Campaign is the
largest and oldest drug prevention program in the nation,”
said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow.
“This is an outstanding opportunity to show our children
and the people in our communities
that we stand united in our fight against illegal drug use.”
The Red Ribbon Campaign is sponsored
by the National Family Partnership, which encourages
everyone to display a red ribbon
throughout October to help promote drug-free communities and
homes.
“Our children have the right to grow
up drug free,” added Commissioner Farrow. “It is our
responsibility as parents and
community members to make that happen.”
