In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the world celebrated the end of World War I. Twenty years later, Congress designated November 11 as a national holiday to honor the men and women who place their lives on the line to defend our freedom.
I am honored tomorrow to participate in the 6th Annual Mather Veterans Day event, co-sponsored by the City of Rancho Cordova and the Mather Veterans Hospital. I, like every American, am a benefactor of the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform and it is a great privilege to recognize their service to a grateful nation.
Americans from all walks of life raise their hands each day to volunteer and answer their nation’s call. Although their sacrifices, courage and dedication should be recognized every time Americans exercise their freedoms and rights, we set aside this special day once a year for solemn reflection to remember the sacrifice of those who have died and to honor those who are still with us.
Whether they served in time of war or time of peace, America’s veterans all share a common bond – their unwavering commitment to preserve and protect the liberties we hold so dear. Their patriotism and love of county is unparalleled. It is not the powerful weapons or the sophisticated technology which make our military the greatest in the world. The true strength of our military is the spirit of our servicemembers – those who have worn and those who now wear the uniform of our armed forces.
There are 62,591veterans in our third Congressional District and I am honored and humbled to represent them all. May God bless all our Veterans - past and present - and may God bless these United States of America.
Sincerely,
Daniel E. Lungren
Member of Congress
