On November 26th, 2011, at approximately 8:30 PM, an officer from the Angels Camp Police Department was dispatched to a report of a vehicle burglary, where the victim reported that his vehicle was broken into while it was parked in the downtown area. The victim, visiting from Southern California, parked and locked his vehicle and then went out to dinner with a friend. Upon returning to his vehicle he noticed that the vehicle door was ajar and property was missing. Items taken included an iPad 2, a back pack, clothing, and other items.
Utilizing a G.P.S. tracking feature on the iPad 2, the victim was able to provide information that the stolen item was currently at an address in Angels Camp. Ofc. David Scarborough responded to the 600 block of Stanislaus Avenue, where he located the stolen iPad 2 and arrested a male subject.James Martin Winship, a 19-year-old Angels Camp resident, was found to be in possession of the stolen iPad 2 and detained. During the course of the investigation, Winship stated that he had just purchased the iPad 2 from another male subject for $20.00.
The second subject, a fifteen-year-old juvenile Angels Camp resident, was also detained at another address. The juvenile ultimately admitted to his involvement in the burglary, theft, and sale of the stolen iPad 2, and was also able to provide information related to the location of some of the additional stolen property. Winship was cited and released for possession of stolen property, and the juvenile suspect was released to the custody of the Juvenile Probation Department. The juvenile is facing charges related to vehicle burglary, grand theft, and possession of stolen property. The iPad 2 and the other stolen property that was recovered were returned to the victim.
