Friends of the Library Keeping their Hopes High and their Calendar Full

The Copperopolis Friends of the Library had their monthly meeting Tuesday night to discuss, not only the budget woes that seem to hang over the county, but about all the good that they have done and are planning on doing collectively as a community group.
Touching lightly on the fact that funding for the County literacy program has been cut by 1/3 and the measures that may need to be taken to continue to fund that program was at the top of the agenda. Followed quickly by the possible disbanding of the 4999, a Hwy 49 and Hwy 99 group of libraries that have banded together to meet and share books between their libraries. “With more and more libraries not allowing inter library loans and some requiring proof of residency to obtain a library card…the inter library loan program is currently in dire straits” said Marilyn Richardson, President of the Copperopolis Friends of the Library and member at large on the Calaveras County Library Commission.
Old business and New Business followed. The FOTL discussed their Adopt-A-Highway clean up day, that turned into two days, the upcoming County FOTL Trivia Bee Dinner fundraiser slated for March 26, and their involvement in the upcoming Copper Pride day April 16, a community day event to help clean up Copper.
Summer plans are also heating up for the Copper Library summer reading program complete with prizes. Between now and summer there may be a few more kids movie nights and some arts and craft days.
There is a growing roster of willing volunteers and a planned book drive starting soon. Copper FOTL is “moving ahead positively.”
