Autumnal Equinox Today 9-22-12

Fall for 2012 begins in the Northern Hemisphere on September 22, 10:49 A.M. EDT. Here’s more about the first day of fall—the autumnal equinox—plus, facts, folklore, and some fantastic fall photos! The word equinox comes from the Latin words for "equal night." The fall and spring equinoxes are the only days of the year in which the Sun crosses the celestial equator. From here on out, the temperatures begin to drop and the days start to get shorter than the nights.

Bashwalla returns to Twisted Oak

Twisted favorite Bushwalla, an acoustic/ Hip-Hop performer rooted in folk, comedy and optimism, will be back this fall to wrap up the inaugural Folk at the Oak Summer Concert Series!
Bushwalla (aka Billy Galewood) began performing in musical theater at the early age of nine. At 18 he was studying theater at the American Musical & Dramatic Academy in New York City, supporting himself as a street performer by incorporating such feats as juggling, magic, face-balancing, and fire-breathing. Today, Bushwalla's sound has evolved into a unique blend of acoustic hip-hop, folk, and funk with a soul deeply rooted in authenticity and optimism.
A songwriter, collaborator and free-styler, Bushwalla co-wrote Jason Mraz's debut platinum album, Waiting For My Rocket to Come and sophomore release Mr. A-Z. Recently, his songs have been featured on hit television shows such as Weeds, Revenge, Fuel TV, E!s The Daily 10 and the Rachel Ray Show. Bushwalla co-wrote the title track to the breakout film New York Minute and, in 2012, his song "Mayhem is Beautiful" will be featured in the film 10 Year, starring Rosario Dawson and Channing Tatum.

Welcome to the Country - a humorous look at life in the country

So you’ve decided to move to the country where life may be just a might bit slower than you had imagined.
If you have lived here, say goin’ on four or five months now, you have undoubtedly been a recipient of our own unique brand of country type traffic jams. That would be the interminably slow moving traffic caused by a tractor meandering its way along, what anyone not living here would perceive as a country road, but we all know as a major roadway. Normally a slow tractor is viewed as just another aspect of life in the country to be patiently tolerated, but when that tractor is between me and the nearest coffee shop, that is when said tractor becomes a problem.
I digress.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day September 21, 2012

Many Americans across the United States pause to remember the sacrifices and service of those who were prisoners of war (POW), as well as those who are missing in action (MIA), and their families. All military installations fly the National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag, which symbolizes the nation’s remembrance of those who were imprisoned while serving in conflicts and those who remain missing.
Veteran rallies take place in many states, such as Wisconsin, in the United States on National POW/MIA Recognition Day. United States flags and POW/MIA flags are flown on this day and joint prayers are made for POWs and those missing in action. National POW/MIA Recognition Day posters are also displayed at college or university campuses and public buildings to promote the day. Remembrance ceremonies and other events to observe the day are also held in places such as the Pentagon, war memorials and museums.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day is not a federal public holiday in the United States but it is a national observance.

Last Weekend for Murphys Creek Theater's 'Imaginary Invalid'

In Molière’s outrageous satire of medicine and its practitioners, the wealthy Argan, to put it mildly, enjoys poor health. Laxatives, suppositories, bloodlettings, and second and third opinions from the leading quacks are the order of his day—and hell on his wily, back-talking servant Toinette. His daughter Angélique is in love with the impoverished Cléante, but Argan wants to marry her to Thomas Diafoirus, a medical dunce who can assure his father-in-law a lifetime of health care. Cléante disguises himself as a music teacher to gain access to his love, but Béline, Argan’s mercenary second wife, threatens to expose them. A disguised Toinette, sage advice from his brother Béralde, and a faked death scene finally teach Argan where to place his trust. Rated “PG” Playing at the Black Bart Playhouse, 580 S. Algiers Rd., Murphys, Ca. 95247.

Governor Brown Signs Legislation to Support Veterans

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today signed several bipartisan bills that improve services and opportunities for veterans in California.

“Yesterday, a bill to invest in job training for veterans was blocked because of Washington political infighting,” said Governor Brown. “Here in California, Republicans and Democrats joined together to support our veterans. These bills respect the honor and dignity of those who serve.”

“This comprehensive package of legislation signed by Governor Brown continues to demonstrate that California is fulfilling its obligation to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much,” said Maj. Gen. David S. Baldwin, California National Guard Adjutant General.

“Veterans issues should never be partisan,” said California Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Peter J. Gravett. “These bills show our commitment to serving those who served.”

The Governor signed the following bills:

Governor Brown signs Olsen’s ADA reform bill into law Law will reduce costs for school press boxes

SACRAMENTO –– Late yesterday, Governor Jerry Brown signed Assemblymember Kristin Olsen’s (R-Modesto) Assembly Bill 2030 into law, which will conform California law to newly passed federal ADA requirements for small press boxes.

“The signing of AB 2030 will go a long way in reducing the financial burden on schools and other facilities that find the addition of a press box unaffordable,” said Olsen. “This is a great win for educational and recreational organizations, which will now have greater utilization of their facilities, and likely greater coverage of their sporting events.”

Olsen carried this bill on behalf of Big Valley Christian School in Modesto, which has indefinitely delayed building a press box at its stadium because of the high cost of the CA ADA requirements.

Calaveras County Promotes Services for National Child Passenger Safety Week

September 16th through the 22nd is National Child Passenger Safety Week.  “Keeping children safe in vehicles is not as easy as it sounds,” said Dr. Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County Health Officer.  “The safety seat must be one that fits your child, and fits your vehicle,” Kelaita added.  Car seats and booster seats protect children birth – 8 years of age.  The seat must be used correctly each time a child travels in a vehicle.

Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death for children 1-13 years of age in the U.S.  Children’s bodies are less able to withstand the force of a crash.  That is why safety seats are required for infants and children.  A new 2012 law in California to protect children requires the use of a booster seat for children until they are 4’9” or 8 year of age.  A booster seat fits older children better than adult seat belts and keeps them safer.  Children riding in a vehicle who are not in an age appropriate safety seat have a higher risk of serious injury or death in a crash.

Sawmill Lake Project at the forefront of Planning Commission meeting

The following video is of the September 13, 2012 Planning Commission meeting which weighed heavily on the Sawmill Lake Project.

According to Planning Commissioner Rebecca Willis "11 issues are identified in the staff report.  At the applicant’s request, the Planning Commission continued the hearing until Dec 13th.  Staff is willing to meet with the applicant to look at project modifications that Castle and Cooke may be willing to do and where that may go.  However, the nature of some of the items do not lend themselves to being “resolved” in 90 days."

At the 9-13-12 meeting planning submitted a staff report that was prepared August 24, 2012. The report stated that the Sawmill Lake Project was not consistent with the Current General Plan and precludes option in the conservation element, land use element and water element of the General Plan. The report further stated that the Planning Commission direct 'staff to prepare a resolution recommending that the Board of Supervisors deny without prejudice the General Plan Amendment, Specific Plan, Vesting Tentative Map, and Development Agreement for the Sawmill Lake Project based upon the findings contained and found there in to be brought back to the Planning Commission for action.'

The questions surrounding the approval of the project include, but are not limited to, habitat of the Western Pond Turtle, six Tuolumne Button Celery plants, residential water runoff that could potentially have detrimental effects on Chinese Camp Brodiaea plants downstream, thinning of Oak trees, and more. (Read full staff report for list of ‘findings.’)

Joni Morris Enthralled Concert-goers at Town Square Concert

Joni Morris has a firm grip on the philosophy of showmanship. Entering the concert at Town Square on Saturday 9-15-12 evening in a horse drawn carriage was just the beginning of her fun loving and energetic show. Singing Patsy Cline, Elvis, and Roy Orbinson avec dark sunglasses Joni had the crowds tapping their toes and smiling from ear to ear.

Dancing was carried out in earnest as was singing along with the well known tunes from our yester- years.

This is the third year Joni has graced the stage at Town Square and if the crowd's reaction was any clue, she will most likely be gracing our stage once again.

Columbia College's. Culinary & Pastry Program
Smelling & tasting GOOD !
Once again we journeyed to the school for a lunch in the "Cellar", the school's restaurant.
On the way to the "Cellar" we found the door open to the pastry/bakery.  The "bear claw" tasted Heavenly - giving a mouth warming & tummy wanting more feeling.  And my friend said the cookies she got were real good.
  "The Cellar"
One enters thru the school's snack shop.  What a nice atmosphere, even with almost all seats taken, we had one of the new students serving as our waitress.  We ordered the lunch special - soup, main dish, desert & drink.  We took a poll vote, of the three of us at our table after eating while we had desert and came up with 4 STARS.  Not bad for students learning the ways of a good restaurant. We left full & with a  "we'll be back" feeling.

Vote to support funding for Sheriff Dept 3-2 Tryon and Callaway vote no

AB109 funds came up again in budget discussion and sup plantation of funds was clarified, it was made clear that the AB109 funds cannot go into general fund. Tofanelli stated he felt he was forced to create a position within the Sheriff Dept due to the shifting of staff to appease the AB109 requirements.

DA Yook made a presentation regarding her departments ability - or inability - to prosecute cases properly with a lack of trained detectives or law enforcement creating the reports that are sent to her department.  Speaking in favor of more deputies/detectives, Tofanelli stated that detectives are a necessity, that if funds are approved they should be used for the “appropriate amount of detectives to relieve stress on the DA” to complete her job effectively. Spellman pointed to the “safety of general public and officers themselves” along with  extra staff time spent in multiple departments and the effective pursuit of prosecution based on appropriate documentation of records.
Wilensky - yes, Callaway-no, Tryon – no, Spellman – yes, Tofanelli – yes.

Gov Brown Signs Worker's Compensation Reform

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today signed landmark legislation – backed by both Democrats and Republicans – to reduce costs to businesses and protect workers by cutting out hundreds of millions of dollars in waste from California’s workers’ compensation system.

The bill, SB 863 (De León), reverses a four-year trend of rate increases. Without reform, these costs would continue to escalate, which would mean higher costs for businesses and smaller payments for injured workers.

“These significant reforms save hundreds of millions of dollars for California’s employers while preventing an imminent crisis of skyrocketing rates that would have hurt both injured workers and businesses,” said Governor Brown. “It’s extraordinary to see Republicans and Democrats come together to solve a problem before it becomes a crisis.”

“This reform law will create greater efficiencies and accountability in the system, save major employers money that can be used to hire new workers and help our economic recovery and protect workers who have been injured on the job,” said Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez. “This is a major victory for the people of California, and I am proud to have worked with the Governor, my colleagues in both parties and both houses of the Legislature and finally the stakeholders who came together in a spirit of good faith and cooperation to make this reform proposal a reality.”

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,526,154 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped one foot this week and is currently at 1006 ft. above sea level and 82 ft. from full.  Water temperature has cooled a bit and is in the mid to upper 70's.  The lake is stained, with mud lines forming around the shore on windy days, and days with a lot of boat traffic. Good news, the lower ramp on Glory Hole Point is open, which makes for an easy walk.

3rd Annual Suicide Prevention Walk-a-thon a moving experience

When Live On organizers Kim Carnes Molina and daughter Amber Chambers lost Junior - their son and brother - they turned their personal tragedy into an effort to save others and help heal those that have survived.

This year was Live On's 3rd Annual Suicide Prevention and Awareness Walk-a-thon. Monies raised from the walk-a-thons help with the cost of outreach and the two support groups held once a month each. One group is for anyone who has lost someone to suicide and the other is for people who have the ideation of suicide. The meetings are held the second Monday of the month. FOr those who lost someone the meetings are held at 5:30-6:30 and those with ideation held at 6:30 -7:30 at the Refuge church in Angels, behind BHHS.

Local author and survivor Charity Maness spoke at the onset of the walk-a-thon relating her story of loss and the need to embrace Live-On's philosophy of 'breaking the silence and stigma associated with suicide.'

This year to date in Calaveras County there have been 15 confirmed suicides, 99 in the last ten years. Calaveras County exceeds twice the national average.

The 99 shoes symbolize the 99 suicide deaths in Calaveras County in the last 10 years.

Happy Constitution Day

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is observed each year on September 17 to commemorate the signing of the Constitution on September 17, 1787, and “recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens.”

This commemoration had its origin in 1940, when Congress passed a joint resolution authorizing and requesting the President to issue annually a proclamation setting aside the third Sunday in May for the public recognition of all who had attained the status of American citizenship.  The designation for this day was “I Am An American Day.”

Rock Show to hit Town Square 9-22-12

So, you may ask, what is Rock Show? We put together a production that incorporates high energy Rock music from the 80s. Some may call it the “Hair Band” era or even “Pop Rock”. Either way you slice it, music in the 80s had a distinct sound and feel that is still near and dear to the hearts of many of us from that generation. I often flashback to playing these songs all along the Jersey Shore in some of the hottest night clubs in the 80s. I am proud to now share the stage with my wife Dana and our dear friend Martha (whom we met singing at the Sports Pub almost 3 years ago).

How to Appeal the Fire Tax from CaliforniaFireFee.com

How to Appeal

The law that created the Fire Fee also established the appeals process;
Time is Critical!
  • The Fire Fee bill must be paid and/or appealed within thirty days of the billing date (which is when the bill was sent, not when you received it). Late petitions will not be considered. This means that if a petition is not filed within the thirty days, the bill becomes due at the end of the period. (14 CCR Chapter 13, Section 1665.5(a)(4))
The Petition
  • The petition must be in writing. In the near future, CALFIRE will provide a form that can be used to appeal, which is now available. It can be downloaded [HERE].

Oil Painintg in Town Square with George Durkee

Well known local artist and instructor George Allen Durkee shared his knowledge and love of art with a captive audience on Thursday September 13, 2012 in Town Square.

Through Town Hall Arts Durkee - Town Hall Arts July artist of the month - is teaching a multi-week course on outdoor oil painting. The scenery each artist chooses is their own and though taught by Durkee each artist clearly paints with their own style.

Durkee calls his form of oil painintg "Open Air Approach to Creative Landscapes" harking to a time when Durkee would travel the streets of Portland and SanFrancisco painting landscapes and cityscapes, creating his own unique style and unwittingly garnering a strong following.
