Sheriff Office Press Release - Re: Drop the Drugs Event

Calaveras community members can prevent prescription and other drug misuse and abuse by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted drugs on October 29,2011 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at three locations around the county. A "Drop the Drugs" event is being presented by Calaveras County Sheriff s Office, Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention, and Angels Camp Police Department. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Local Jazz Drummer Jimmy Valencia performing at San Carlos Art & Wine Festival

Copperopolis Drummer Jimmy Valencia’s ‘Cool Jazz’ band will be playing the San Carlos Art & Wine Festival October 8, 2011 from 12:00 to 2:30. The ‘Cool Jazz’ band consists of percussionist Jimmy Valencia, keyboard Bob Johns, bass Hal Bigler, lead guitar Dr. Bob Navarra and vocalist Bernadette Soubirou.

Jimmy began playing drums at the age of 16 under the watchful and helpful eye of his older brother and experienced percussionist, Eddy.  When Jimmy entered the Air Force the higher-ups caught wind of his drum skills and Jimmy was immediately placed in the Drum and Bugle Corps. Not only did he get to play all day long he also managed to skirt KP duties with this gig. While in the military Jimmy made friends with a few musicians who conveniently played sax, piano and bass. Soon thereafter they applied to work at a local night club and the rest is history.

Calaveras Taxpayers Host Public Luncheon in Murphys - keynote speaker Congressman Thomas McClintock

The Calaveras County Taxpayers Association (CCTA) is sponsoring a public luncheon, according to Al Segalla, CCTA President.

The Buffet Luncheon will be held at the Murphys Historic Hotel on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 12:00 - 2:00 PM. 

In addition to a discussion of topical issues, the Congressman will be giving recognition to the winners of the CCTA sponsored Constitution Day Contest which was open to Calaveras students in grades 1 – 12 for their entries in categories of art, essay or video. California Launches “Buy It Where You Burn It” Campaign

locally, CAL FIRE and the California Firewood Task Force kicked off a public outreach

campaign in September to inform campers, wood cutters, arborists, and the general public about

the risks of long-distance movement of firewood.

“Firewood can carry insects and pathogens that may or may not be visible, making it impossible

to know if you are transporting an invasive pest from one location to another when moving it,

said CAL FIRE’s Don Owen, chair of the California Firewood Task Force. “Once an invasive

species is established in a new area, it can do a lot of damage environmentally and economically

as the trees in those areas have no natural defenses to fight off pest attack.”

During the first month at Copperopolis Elementary the student body held elections for 6 student council positions.

Nonviolent Felons to return from State Prisons to be housed in Calaveras County Jail

As of October 1, 2011 California counties no longer will send many of their nonviolent felons to state prisons, instead keeping thousands in local jails or even in home detention. The move aims to ease prison overcrowding that resulted in a stinging U.S. Supreme Court ruling in May.

Sheriff Kuntz stated that initially Calaveras County will see approximately 2-5 inmates return to their facility. His concern is the funding to take care of the inmates. “The drug dealers coming back we can house for up to 3 -5 years” with funding questionable.

Mr. Brown failed to persuade lawmakers to approve a ballot measure this year asking voters to guarantee future funding, instead, the governor said he would aim for a November 2012 initiative.

Kuntz is hoping that the Governor will be as good as his word and that funding without a ballot measure will be forthcoming, but even if funding is approved, his concern then is the threat of cutting that funding.

Congressman Lungren praises COPS Funding announcement

9-28-11 Congressman Dan Lungren (R-Gold River), spoke at a press conference praising the announcement of the 2011 Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) hiring program awards. Lungren was joined by COPS Director Bernard Melekian from the US Department of Justice and area representatives. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s and Sacramento Police Departments have received funding to place 50 police officersback on the street.

COPS Hiring Program (CHP) grants provide funding to state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to hire, preserve and/or rehire career law enforcement officers in an effort to create and preserve jobs and increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts. Congressman Lungren released the following statement:
"I am very pleased to see that once again the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office and City of Sacramento Police Department have been selected to receive federal grant funding through the COPS Office. Once the program was funded, I have supported our region's efforts from the first day. As the former top cop of California, I understand the impact 50 officers will have on the safety and well-being of our County and the City of Sacramento. Our Sheriff and police forces are amongst the finest in the nation and it comes as no surprise to me that they would be selected for this award."

Music was provided by keyboardist and vocalist Greg  Brown  accompanied by Dennis Hansen on guitar. Greg played music that brought one back to a time when lyrics told stories and people enjoyed the simple things in life. While children jumped in gunny sack races and parents enjoyed the WWII jeep display, Greg serenaded. Greg has CD’s available. The Copperopolis Lions Club donated a large portion of the sodas, helping energize the children for yet more fun country picnic games and Payless IGA donated cases of bottled water to cool down the mouth after eating the hot chili.

Tickets are available at the Copperopolis Branch Library for $15.00 each or 2 for $25.00. Beer, wine, soda & water will be available for purchase starting at 4:30 pm.

The Town Square scarecrow auction will also be held October 15, 2011 5-8 pm. Each scarecrow auctioned will be raising funds for a local charity or group.

Live entertainment will be provided by our local Copper Idol Kids and other local talented youth.

'Rockin' Robin Raffle' to raise funds for the Calaveras Friends of the Library

          “ROCKIN’ ROBIN” CHAIR IS RAFFLE PRIZE

A unique and original chair, designed by a local artist, has been designated by the Calaveras Friends of the Library to be the prize in a county-wide raffle. The rocking chair, with amazing construction and colorful detail, is in the form of a stylized robin.  It was crafted by local artist, Pete Kelly.

The chair is a gift to the Friends of the Library by members Doug and Marilyn Hinsdale and Glenna Larson, who successfully bid on it at a Chairs for Charity fundraiser. 

  

On this day in history - 10-1-1890 - Yosemite National Park Established

On this day in 1890, an act of Congress creates Yosemite National Park, home of such natural wonders as Half Dome and the giant sequoia trees. Environmental trailblazer John Muir (1838-1914) and his colleagues campaigned for the congressional action, which was signed into law by President Benjamin Harrison and paved the way for generations of hikers, campers and nature lovers, along with countless "Don't Feed the Bears" signs.
Native Americans were the main residents of the Yosemite Valley, located in California's Sierra Nevada mountain range, until the 1849 gold rush brought thousands of non-Indian miners and settlers to the region. Tourists and damage to Yosemite Valley's ecosystem followed. In 1864, to ward off further commercial exploitation, conservationists convinced President Abraham Lincoln to declare Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias a public trust of California. This marked the first time the U.S. government protected land for public enjoyment and it laid the foundation for the establishment of the national and state park systems. Yellowstone became America's first national park in 1872.

2011 Memorial Ceremony Offers Moving Tribute to 30 Fallen Firefighters

Uniformed firefighters, family members and dignitaries from throughout California gathered Saturday to pay tribute to those who gave their lives to protect the lives and property of Californians.
Continuing a solemn and sobering autumn tradition, the California Firefighters Memorial added the names of 30 California firefighters who fell in the line of duty. Located in historic Capitol Park, adjoining the California State Capitol in Sacramento, the Memorial carries the names of more than 1,200 firefighters who died in service since California became a state in 1850.

Union Democrat highlights Copperopolis VFW post formation efforts

Combat veterans who live in and around Copperopolis may have a place to gather early next year.
    An effort to bring a Veterans of Foreign Wars post to the community is just five short of a minimum 35 members to submit an application.
    “We’re so near but yet so far away,” said Al Gilbert, who is leading the charge to gain recognition.
    A half-dozen applicants are awaiting an eligibility determination and may put Copperopolis over the hump. VFW members must have spent at least 30 days in a combat zone.
        Once the post gains recognition from VFW authorities at the state and federal levels, it can solicit funds, including grants, to build a hall or for other activities.
    Gilbert said the post will likely rent space to start.
    For now, prospective members meet at 2 p.m. every third Sunday of the month at the 8-A Community Center on Feather Drive in Copperopolis.

South Carolina secedes from the United States Union.

Copperopolis is making there own 'history to be remembered' with a commemorative brick wall located in the Copperopolis Historic Plaza on Main Street, in the historic district.
