Vouchers for Veterans within the Angels Camp Veteran Memorial District

The A/C Veterans Memorial District has once again voted to issue a $50.00 food voucher to all Veterans residing in the District. The vouchers will be distributed Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th from 11am to 3 pm.  If you have a question about whether or not you live in the District, give Tony Tyrrell a call at his office; 736-1778.
The Veterans Memorial District office is located at; 1219 Rasberry Lane in Angels Camp.
If you know of any Veteran that lives in the "District area" let them know about this, also some of our Comrades do not have e-mail access, let them know too. If any  Veteran needs a ride to pick up his voucher and or pick up the groceries, let me know. The voucher is redeemed at the Angels Food Market. The voucher is not for alcohol or tobacco, food only.

Free Dental Care for vets on Veterans Day

Dr. Shannon Russell in Angels Camp with First Impressions Dental is offering FREE dental care on Tuesday, November 11^th (Veteran’s Day) for military veterans of all ages.  They do need to call first though to schedule an appointment. They are providing cleanings and immediate concern care that day (example: fill cavity or pull a tooth). Denture care will NOT be provided that day.

The purpose of this presentation is to help bring history alive for our students.  Who else can tell the story of our Armed Forces better than those who have worn the uniform?  Learning history on a first-person basis is the most remembered history.

Like years past, I will have the Lower Gym setup in an “exhibitor” fashion with small groups speaking with each presenter for approx. 20 minutes.  I would like to encourage you to bring with you any momentous, pictures, etc. that will help to tell your story.

Job Search Workshop for Veterans 2-20-14

A Job Search Workshop for veterans will be held on Thursday, February 20 at the San Andreas Library in Calaveras from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  at 1299 Gold Hunter Road off of Mountain Ranch Road.

                The event is hosted by the Employment Development Department and Mother Lode Job Training. 

                “Our veterans have served our country well,” Elena Linehan, Calaveras Manager of Mother Lode Job Training said.  “They are entitled to a wide array of veteran services available from the Employment Development Department.  And we want to make certain they are aware of them.”

                The workshop will feature presentations from local employers who hire veterans as well as information regarding the 7,000 job openings anticipated by the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and how to apply for them.

                Also on hand will be representatives for the Calaveras Veteran Services Office, the VA Veteran Offices, Mother Lode Job Training and the Employment Development Department.

Poem submitted by a reader - title 'A Veteran Died Today'

He was getting old and paunchy
 And his hair was falling fast,
 And he sat around the Legion,
 Telling stories of the past.
 
 Of a war that he once fought in
 And the deeds that he had done,
 In his exploits with his buddies;
 They were heroes, every one.
 
 And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
 His tales became a joke,
 All his buddies listened quietly
 For they knew where of he spoke.
 
 But we'll hear his tales no longer,
 For ol' Joe has passed away,
 And the world's a little poorer
 For a Veteran died today.
 
 He won't be mourned by many,
 Just his children and his wife.
 For he lived an ordinary,
 Very quiet sort of life.
 

Bret Harte students listen to living history

Wearing their pressed uniforms, veterans representing World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War era filed into the Bret Harte High School gym to participate in Bret Harte’s annual Veteran Oral History Project.
The project was started in 1997 by Bret Harte High School history teacher Jennifer Truman with the desire to teach outside the box.

“The old school way of teaching, opening a book and simply reading,” was not engaging her students, said Truman. As she brainstormed how to connect young people to history, to make it real, she realized that she herself remembered the many stories her grandfather had told her as a young girl and how those stories were still fresh in her mind. It was then that she knew oral history would bring history alive for her students.

·         THIS IS A NO-COST SERVICE TO VETERANS.  The VA Palo Alto Health Care system Rural Health Mobile Medical Team will provide examinations, consultations, & referrals.   Prescriptions may be renewed for Veterans who are currently in the VA Health Care System.

·         If you are uncertain about your eligibility for medical or psychological services, members of our team can provide you with information about and assistance with, eligibility and enrolment for VA care.   VA healthcare may complement your current insurance coverage.  Eligibility requirements have changed, therefore, if you have been denied in the past, please come meet with us.  New benefits are available for Vietnam and Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans.

·         If you are NOT currently in the VA system, bring an extra copy of your DD214 to attach to your enrollment form.  If you do not have a copy of your DD214, we will obtain one for you, but your enrollment process will be delayed.

·         In addition, Veteran Service Officers will be available to review your benefits, and assist with updating existing disability claims and filing new claims.

Veteran's Courts on the rise in California - not in the foothills ~ by, Charity Maness

Veterans Courts are on the rise in California with nine Veterans Courts currently operating and San Mateo County unveiling a new Veterans Court by summer 2012. These courts are in response to a rise in veterans appearing before courts to face charges stemming from mental illness or substance abuse. Research has shown that the traditional 'drug and mental' health courts do not always meet the needs of the veterans as many veterans are entitled to treatment through the Veteran's Administration.

Penal Code section 1170.9, amended by the California State Legislature in 2006, allows the courts to divert into a program any veteran who was a member “of the military forces of the United States who served in combat” and “suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, or psychological problems as a result of that service.”  Veterans Court is a collaborative court/treatment court. It is a post-plea program, not a diversion program.

Eligibility requirements must be met and exclusions are made for violent crimes. Defendants are placed on probation for 18 months and are required to complete whatever VA programs are deemed appropriate for each individual. It is a collaborative process including a judge, representatives from the probation department, mental health and veteran’s administration, a district attorney, a public defender, and a liaison between the court and the V.A. The process not only helps to catch the combat veterans that fall through the judicial cracks ensuring they receive the services they are entitled to receive as veterans but relieves some of the financial strain on treatment from the County level to the Federal level through the use of programs offered through the VA.

Bill advances to ban picketing near military funerals

Protesters would be prohibited from disruptive demonstrations within 500 feet of funerals under legislation approved Thursday by the state Senate.
SB 661 was introduced in response to demonstrations at military funerals by a religious group that claims war deaths are punishment for the country's tolerance of homosexuality. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the group has a 1st Amendment right to demonstrate.
