Sonora, CA — You can pitch in by pulling weeds in the burned out areas of the Rim Fire.
It is an all-day event on May 24 in the Mi-Wok Ranger District of Stanislaus National Forest. District Botanist Margaret Willits will be leading the eradication project starting at 8:30 am and ending at 3:30 pm.
The goal is to remove tumble mustard from around the Jaw Bone Lava Flat area. Forest Officials say this invasive plant has the potential to impact the food supply for deer and other plant life so removing the mustard will benefit wildlife as well as native plant species.
You will be provided with garbage bags and some gloves. You must be 18-years-old or older to volunteer.

Rim Fire Emergency Salvage Act approved by House

The Rim Fire Emergency Salvage Act by Congressman McClintock was approved today (2-6-14) by the House of Representatives as part of a larger bill, H.R. 2954 (The Public Access and Lands Improvement Act).  Title IX of that bill comprises the Rim Fire Salvage Act.

The salvage language is the result of consultations with Democratic offices and with the U.S. Forest Service.  The compromise language assures compliance with all environmental laws and maintains judicial review, while assuring that salvage can begin this spring.

Governor Brown Appeals Denial of Presidential Major Disaster Declaration for Rim Fire

SACRAMENTO – In a letter sent last night to President Barack Obama, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. renewed the state’s call for federal assistance due to the impacts of the Rim Fire, appealing the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) previous denial of a major disaster declaration.

“The Rim Fire ultimately burned 402 square miles over a period of 69 days, encompassing more than 257,314 acres; causing significant impacts to the State and to the affected local jurisdictions of such severity and magnitude that recovery efforts remain beyond our capabilities,” said Governor Brown in the letter. “In the aftermath of the fire, the State and its communities face infrastructure damage, significant negative economic impact, as well as complex and multifaceted environmental damages. The burned area created an enormous potential for catastrophic flooding and debris runoff from winter storms.”

Fire Update

The Rim fire is now being managed by the Groveland and Mi-Wok Ranger Districts on the Stanislaus National Forest. Minimal fire spread is expected over the next week. There is one 800-1000 acre pocket of vegetation near Kibbie Lake that remains with a potential to burn. Resources will continue to patrol and mop-up while continuing to implement the suppression repair plan. Commercial recreation along the Tuolumne and Clavey Rivers continues to be impacted. The developed areas of Hetch-Hetchy remain evacuated.

Park and Forest Closures:

Evergreen Road is open only to Evergreen Lodge. Hetch Hetchy and surrounding facilities in Yosemite Park remain closed to public access due to hazardous trees. Aspen Valley is open to residents only. Tuolumne Grove and Hodgdon Meadow Campground remain closed. The Stanislaus National Forest issued an updated Rim Fire Area Closure (dated September 12 2013) for the Groveland and Mi-Wok Ranger Districts. Cherry Lake Road is closed at Hwy 120. Old Yosemite and Harden Flat Roads are closed. Some secondary roads within the fire area remain closed to non-residents. Merced Grove and Tamarack Flat are open.

RIM fire Soil Burn Severity report

RIM BAER UPDATE

SONORA CA (September 16 2013) – The BAER team completed the soil burn severity map for the Rim Fire. The map using burned acres as of September 13 shows that approximately 56% of the 254 926 acres within the Rim fire perimeter are either unburned or received a low-severity burn 37% sustained a burn of a moderate severity and approximately 7% burned at a high severity.
BAER specialists concluded that the amount of high severity burn is fairly low given time of year and comparison to other fires. The moderate and low severity burned areas are fairly high for similar reasons. These values are for the entire burn area of the Rim Fire.

Tioga Road opens to thru traffic 9-14-13

STATE ROUTE 120 (Tioga) Reopens

Tioga Road opens to through traffic at Noon on Saturday, September 14

SR-120 (Tioga Road) which had been closed from Crane Flat to White Wolf, within Yosemite National Park, will reopen to all vehicular traffic at noon, Saturday, September 14, 2013.

Visitors will have access to Yosemite Valley from Highway 395 via SR-120. However, due to continued fire activity in the area, stopping along the roadway is strictly prohibited.  The public is advised to use extreme caution as firefighting activities continue in the area and visibility may be reduced due to smoke.  For current road conditions in the park visit:  http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/traffic.htm.
