Bill Albee Memorial Copperopolis Community Garden
We had a very successful onion project this past
Spring. Over 1600 onions were
harvested, with several hundred pounds going to the pantry and to community
members.
We built the four raised beds, currently growing lettuce, carrots, bell peppers
and a few ‘mystery’ plants! (Raised beds funding partially from the Calaveras Community Foundation.)
We are at that part of our growing season when your help
as community volunteers is sorely needed.
Some of the tasks are:
·
-We’ve bell peppers which have set fruit and need
weeding so we get a good harvest
· -
The Hollyhocks, with unique purple flowers
unavailable in stores, need their seed pods harvested for resale
· -
The onion bed has been covered with tarp – and
needs to be uncovered and raked into a mound so we can replant onions now for
next spring
· -
The first bed on the left, as we walk into the
garden, needs weeding so we can plant fall root crops, broccoli and other
plants
·
-The lettuce in the boxes has now bolted, is
bitter. Those with rabbits or other
critters may pick the bolted varieties and take home
Friday evening at 6:30 pm and Saturday morning at 8 am, we
are asking our friends and volunteers to come over and help with some of these
tasks. This will give us a good start on
planting see for winter vegetables, and also get a good fall harvest of what we
already have in the ground.
Please try to find a few hours to come by and help. Tools, trowels and a rake will be available;
bring a pair of gloves to protect your hands around the weeds and squash
plants.
Thank you for your consideration!
