April 18, 2013 marks the date of the 45th Annual Calaveras County Spelling Championship. This annual Spelling Bee will be held at Calaveras River Academy/Mountain Oaks School multipurpose room in San Andreas on Thursday evening, April 18th beginning at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public. This event is sponsored each year by the Teichert Foundation and the Calaveras County Office of Education.
Calaveras County students in sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth grades compete in this event. First, second, and third place winners will receive award plaques, and all participants will receive certificates for their participation in this countywide event. The top two spellers from grades seventh, eighth and ninth will be eligible to compete in the Statewide Junior High State Spelling Bee Championship to be held in San Rafael on May 11, 2013; an event sponsored by the Marin County Office of Education.
The Calaveras Enterprise will award $25.00 cash prizes to the top speller in all grade levels. In addition, the two top spellers who will advance to the State Championship will receive an additional $50.00 each.
