As we observe Veterans Day this year, I hope you will join me in honoring the brave veterans who have served our nation throughout our history and who continue to serve today. On this day, I also have a special request: that you join me in working to help stamp out the epidemic of homelessness among our veterans.
I recently introduced legislation in the Senate that would provide additional resources to help homeless veterans. My Check the Box for Homeless Veterans Act of 2011 (S.1806) would give people the option on their annual tax return to make a voluntary donation to a Homeless Veterans Assistance Fund. Donations would be used to assist homeless veterans through initiatives at the U.S. Departments of Veterans Affairs, Labor, and Housing and Urban Development.
