New Melones Fishing Report - from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,978,950 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped three feet again this week and is currently at 1047 ft. above sea level and 41 ft. from full. Levels will continue to drop, as room needs to be made to accommodate upcoming winter rains. Water temperature is really dropping now, and is currently 67-69 degrees. The lake will "turn over" when surface water cools to the same temp as the deeper water- around 53-54 degrees. This usually happens around Thanksgiving, and then the trout bite really turns on for bank-anglers and trollers alike.  

Trout: Pretty good. Most anglers who are willing to put in the time are catching limits of 1-2 pound holdovers. Bite is best in the morning. Trollers have been doing well fishing over the main river channel, in the main lake and at the mouths of major creek arms, 35-50 feet deep. Varying your trolling speed and making figure-S patterns will often catch a hungry trout's attention.

Senator Gaines Receives Perfect Score On 2011 Taxpayer Report Card

Senator Ted Gaines (R-Roseville) today announced that he has scored 100 percent on the California Taxpayers Association’s (CalTax) 2011 Voting Record. Gaines was one of only 30 state legislators out of the 120 Assembly and Senate members to receive the top score.

Kovac's Memorial BBQ - heartwarming

Saturday October 29, 2011 a memorial BBQ was held at Bridlewood Equestrian Center for 14 year-old Jordan Kovacs and her best friend and grandfather Rick Kovacs who passed away September 19, 2011 while sleeping "as a result of what authorities believe was carbon monoxide poisoning" stated Chief of Clements Fire Dept after an initial investigation.

Approximately 300 people attended the event and up to 250 were fed. Sysco Food Services of Central CA and its suppliers, supplied much of the food and the Richey Family of Copperopolis also donated additional tri tip and chicken.
The Hills Brothers Band performng throughout the event. "The band was phenomenal." Said Kim Borzone, one of the many coordinators of the event that made it a brilliant success.
The event raised an astounding $8081.06 for the family!!

Snaps hosting booksigning by local author 11-11-11 at 11 am

Snaps Coffee House will be hosting a booksigning event with author Charity Maness, featuring her latest non-fiction release, "It's Lonely Here in Hell" Love Letters from Nam. A true story based on letters written home to Michelle Piper from PFC James Dennis Piper.

  April 9, 1967, in a letter from Jim Piper to his young bride Michelle, he wrote, "I thank God each night for my wife and my life and also enjoy each breath that I take and praise every morning I wake up too. It means another day gone, another day I'm alive and another day closer to being home with my wife forever."

PFC James Dennis Piper was in killed in action two days later on April 11, 1967 in the jungles of Vietnam.

Tips for choosing the right costumes:

Purchase costumes made of flame retardant material (Check the label).
Keep hemlines short enough to prevent tripping and avoid loose, baggy sleeves, or billowing skirts.
To be seen easily, costumes should be made of a light color material.
Use glow in the dark reflective tape on your costume.
Use make-up rather than masks which could obstruct vision.

Tips for Halloween night:

Use battery powered lights - never use candles to light jack-o’-lanterns.
Instruct children to stay away from open flames.
Remove objects from the yard that present a hazard to children (garden tools, hoses, etc.).
Be extremely careful with cornstalks and other harvest season items. Keep them away from sources of heat. Don’t let them block doorways or stairs.
Do not allow children to carry sharp sticks or other objects that could cause injury to others.
If you are driving on Halloween, take care…watch out for trick-or-treaters who will be too busy to watch out for you.
Closely inspect all candy before allowing children to eat it. Discard any unwrapped treats from a stranger.
If in doubt, throw it out.

CCWD pressure regulating valve 'let go' causing some damage in Copper homes and businesses

Over the weekend many homes in the Copper Cove subdivision had a water pressure 'spike' that caused damages to water heaters and some flooding to businesses. Copper Gazette questioned Copper's CCWD District Representative Dennis Dooley about the occurance and he subsequently contacted the GM . Dooley forwarded the following response from the GM:
"One of our PRVs (pressure regulating valve) let go last Friday (10-21-11) causing sudden pressures to several homes/ businesses in the area. It resulted in water heaters "blowing up" and some property damages. It happened around 5 pm. Our crews responded quickly and handled the matter. I monitored the activity and it was taken care of immediately. We did get a few claims; however, all customers are required to install PRVs to prevent these sort of situations."  Joone Lopez

Lungren Votes to Repeal Burdensome Tax Provision

Washington, D.C.–Congressman Dan Lungren (R-Gold River-CA) issued the following statement after Congress voted - in a bipartisan manner - for H.R. 674. This bill would prevent a three percent withholding tax that would have been yet another burden on our economy. Under this withholding, federal, state and many local governments will be required to withhold three percent of all government payments made to contractors and suppliers.

Assemblymember Olsen Visits Students in Second Harvest Food Bank's "Food 4 Thought" Program

MODESTO - Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto, today visited students at Agnes Baptist School in Modesto who are participants in the "Food 4 Thought" program sponsored by Second Harvest Food Bank.  The program is a unique incentive-based learning program that combines after-school tutoring with good nutrition for students whose families are economically disadvantaged.

Lungren Co-sponsors National Week for Underserved Veterans

Washington D.C. – Congressman Dan Lungren (R-Gold River-CA) signed on to co-sponsor a bipartisan initiative to help underserved, homeless veterans.
The resolution, introduced on Monday by Congressman Jeff Denham (R-CA), would establish a National Underserved Veterans Awareness Week November 6-12.  The week would consist of ceremonies, activities and volunteer services to bring awareness and care to veterans and promote education on the available resources offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

2011 Steak and Shrimp Fest a success

Since 2003 Young's Payless IGA has partnered with Copperopolis Elementary to host a yearly Steak and Shrimp Fest to raise funds for Copper School. IGA donates all food products and alcohol for the event as well as helping in coordination and event advice.

 

The 2011 Steak and Shrimp Fest raised a total of $10,359 for Copperopolis Elementary.

CAL FIRE Press Release - WINTON-SCHAADS PRESCRIBED BURN

 San Andreas – The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) will be conducting a prescribed burn in the Lily Valley area east of West Point. The proposed 270 total acres included in the Winton-Schaads Prescribed Burn project slated for Fall 2011 will be divided up into smaller, approximately 20-30 acre areas which will be treated starting as early as October 31, 2011 with burns possible through mid-December. One to two CAL FIRE engines along with personnel from Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) will conduct the burns.

Olsen's office distributed Red Ribbon Week certificates to over 50 schools in the 25th Assembly district who planned to participate in Red Ribbon Week activities.

Governor unveils 12 point proposal re: pension system

12-point proposal raises retirement age for public employees, ends system-wide abuses and cuts costs for taxpayers by billions

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today proposed 12 major reforms for state and local pension systems that would end system-wide abuses and reduce taxpayer costs by billions of dollars over the long term.

“It’s time to fix our pension systems so that they are fair and sustainable over a long time horizon,” said Governor Brown. “My plan raises the retirement age and bans abusive practices like ‘spiking’ and ‘air time’ while mandating that public employees pay an equal share of pension costs.”

The Governor’s 12-point plan addresses key issues affecting pensions in state and local governments. He initially outlined a pension reform plan during budget negotiations in March 2011.

Letter from Lungren

Back in Washington after making the most of my week in California during the District Work Period, I remain focused on job creation and economic recovery for our region’s hard hit families, homeowners and small businesses and other job providers.  Unemployment among Californians has been over 10 percent since February 2009 – that is, for almost three years.  That is why I have been committed to providing relief to Californians since day one.
The House has passed 15 jobs bills since the beginning of the 112th Congress in January this year.  Unfortunately, the Senate has stalled 10 of these bills in their chamber – not bringing them up for consideration, amending them with their changes nor sending their own legislation to the House.  In fact, while the Senate has already voted down President Obama’s “American Jobs Act” (Record Vote Number 160), the House has brought forward, considered and passed specific policies from the President’s proposal, including three free trade agreements and repeal of a three percent pre-tax imposed on certain businesses as a means of tax enforcement.

Community Workshop for Regional Transportation Plan Update to be held on November 17

The Calaveras Council of Governments (CCOG) is hosting a community workshop for the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) update on November 17, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Calaveras Senior Center.  The CCOG is updating the Regional Transportation Plan which establishes the transportation funding priorities for the next 20 years.  Community participation will help CCOG to identify projects and assign future transportation investments.  This is an opportunity to provide valuable input on the region’s transportation priorities.  The discussion will focus on creating a safe and more efficient transportation network; identifying transportation issues and opportunities; and prioritizing future transportation and transit needs.  There will be a short presentation at 6:30 p.m. describing the RTP and current transportation priorities.  Representatives from CCOG and the project consultant team will be available to answer questions and receive input throughout the evening.Community members are encouraged to drop by at their convenience between 6 and 8 pm.  More information and a brief survey are also available on the CCOG website at http://www.calacog.org/.

Once again Bret Harte dominated the races.  The varsity boys looked especially strong with Joe, Kevin, Kyle, & Eli leading the pack.  The girls race was quite competitive for the individual title with 4 of the top runners in the section vying for the crown.   Summerville's Kristen Turner pulled away from Bret Harte's Kaylee Sedler at the half way mark and pulled away for a convincing win, her third MLL crown in a row.

Angels Camp PD pres release re: arrest made in sexual assault investigation

On 10/24/11 the Angels Camp Police Department was contacted by the Clovis, CA Police Department regarding a late-reported sexual assault. The female victim contacted the Clovis Police on 10/24/11 to report the assault, which occurred on 10/22/11 while the victim was staying in Angels Camp. Further investigation revealed that the female victim was staying at the Worldmark Resort in Angels Camp when the assault occurred. During the early morning hours of 10/22/11 the female victim was sexually assaulted by a subject that is known to the victim, and who was staying in the same condominium as the victim. On 10/25/11, officers assigned to investigate the assault traveled to Clovis, CA and Fresno, CA to conduct follow-up investigation. During the course of the investigation the officers developed probable cause to arrest a suspect. Thomas Siegrist, a 51-year-old Fresno, CA resident, was arrested and transported back to the Calaveras County Jail, where he was booked on charges related to sexually assaulting an intoxicated victim.

The winner of the hand cross stitched and hand quilted king size quilt to raise funds for the Lymphoma Leukemia Society was local woman Kathy Thaysen.
"I've never won anything before!" Said Kathy, an 8th generation Hershey. According to Thaysen her house is decorated in shaker style and this quilt, donated by Deb and Bill Cody and handmade by Bill's mother Edie in the late '60's, will go perfectly in her home.

Catherine Rice, 51, of San Anselmo, has been appointed to represent the second district on the Marin County Board of Supervisors. Since 2004, Rice has been an administrative aide to Marin County Supervisor Hal Brown. Rice helped found the Ross Valley Schools Foundation in 1999, and served on the board of directors from 1999 to 2002. Additionally, she served on the board of directors for the Ross Valley Community for Schools in 1999.

We lost another close one but our kids never gave up and actually came back twice to tie the score before eventually losing a hard fought game.  We close outh the season Thursday night against Summerville with a chance to still make the playoffs.

Dog Day Afternoon - Four legged friend fun day

Calaveras Humane Society once again were the recipients of Coppr Town Squares and the community of Copper's generosity at the Bi-annual Dog Day Afternoon held each Spring and Fall in Town Square.
Entrants pay a small fee to compete in a costume contest. Winners received prizes from the new pet boutique in Town Square Chloe and Zoeys. Along with funds collected from entrants and the scarecrow auctioned last weekend made by the Beautique, the Humane Society also received all proceeds from a raffle with a plethora of prizes, again, from Cloe and Zoeys. Raffle prizes ranged from gift baskets filled with treats, shampoos and supplements, to kennels, doggie winter coats and the grand prize...a year supply of dog food!
The winner of the year supply of dog food was Stephanie Thionnet and her two black labs Nicholas and Max which came dressed as Harley Davidson twins. Stephanie (and her dogs), already a proud customers of Chloe and Zoeys, were thrilled with their good fortune...and doggie kisses were handed out for free.

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments.

Kathleen Allison, 47, of Lemoore, has been appointed warden at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran. Allison has served as acting warden at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility State Prison, Corcoran since 2009, after serving as chief deputy administrator and chief deputy warden from 2007 to 2009, associate warden from 2004 to 2007, and a correctional health services administrator from 2002 to 2004. She was the community resources manager at Avenal State Prison from 1996 to 2002, after working in a number of positions at the prison beginning in 1987. Allison was a senior medical technical assistant at North Kern State Prison from 1993 to 1994. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $129,108. Allison is a Republican.

What happens during the time period when disasters strike until professional first responders arrive on scene?

A group of West Point area residents have been training for such occasions. The Sheriffs Office continues to focus on 'Community First' and facilitated a disaster simulation Monday night (October 24) Vets Hall marking the conclusion to a three month long training for the area's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). This training was held Monday nights for approx. 2-3 hours each night and consisted of instruction to community members in disaster preparation, light search and rescue, fire safety, medical operations, disaster psychology, terrorism, and finally a test and full scale exercise in which the 13 community members displayed the skills they learned. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CER T members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

CDCR expands "Operation Boo" Halloween Children's safety project

Online empowerment brochure launched to spur discussion about dangerous adults

Sacramento – The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Division of Adult Parole Operations – aided by the Attorney General’s Office, SAFE Officers and law enforcement partners statewide – is expanding the Halloween children safety project “Operation Boo.”

This year, the project includes the October 24, online launch of a parent empowerment brochure. The media is being invited to partner with CDCR in spreading the word to help keep kids safe. Visits to transient sex-offender round-up centers also will be added to the traditional sex-offender compliance checks on Halloween night. Lake Tulloch Resort Hosts Car Show 10-22-11

When the Resort wants to throw a shindig they proved they can do it in record time.
Wanting to have a car show and tri-tip bbq, the crew at Lake Tulloch Resort put their heads together and in just under four days they pulled a rabbit out of their hats and hosted a wonderful, free to the public and entrants alike, eclectic car show with entrants from as far as Murphys and as close as Copper and some from Tuolomne County too.
Some of the entrants included:
Sierra Car Club, Sierra Angels and Central Valley Corvette Club. Jack Wilson, Rick Lehfeldt, Robert and Carmen, Al Gilbert, Terry Costa, Warren Iserloth, Jim McCutcheon, Bill, Ed and Larry.
