What happens during the time period when disasters strike until professional first responders arrive on scene?
A group of West Point area residents have been training for such occasions. The Sheriffs Office continues to focus on 'Community First' and facilitated a disaster simulation Monday night (October 24) Vets Hall marking the conclusion to a three month long training for the area's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). This training was held Monday nights for approx. 2-3 hours each night and consisted of instruction to community members in disaster preparation, light search and rescue, fire safety, medical operations, disaster psychology, terrorism, and finally a test and full scale exercise in which the 13 community members displayed the skills they learned. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CER T members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
