CSTARS presents 'Singin' in the Rain'

Vacation Bible School - bringing positive light into each childs day

Over 80 Copper kids participated in the annual Copper Canyon Baptist Church vacation bible school held last week, 7-14 thru 7-18-14.

Games, songs, lessons, crafts, etc with a Christ centered theme were enjoyed by all.

The theme of the school was 'Weird Animals'. With the emphasis being that though someone may be different or 'weird' to you they are still loved by God. Some folks got into the spirit and dressed 'weird' to show kids it was OK to be different.

In the center of the room was a huge tree trunk decorated with small paper flowers with writing on them. Each flower represents a 'God sighting'. If a child saw or thought of something nice someone had done they wrote it down and placed it on the tree trunk. This repeated action taught the kids to look for the good no matter where you are.

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

7-21-14 Fishing Report

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding
656,228 acre-feet of water.  The lake level dropped four feet this week and is currently at 888 ft. above sea level and 197 ft. from full.  The water is stained in most areas of the lake, and fairly clear in others.  There are mud lines forming near the shore throughout the day, especially on windy days. The average water temperature is 78-84 degrees.  Tuttletown launch is closed. Glory Hole Point boat launch is open, and there are no plans to close it. There will be some transition periods between launches where launching will be limited to one or two lanes.

Trout:  Fair.  The trout are roaming the main lake near deeper/cooler water looking for balls of shad.  Anglers should try fishing close to the surface in the early morning and evening and dropping to 40-60' during the day.  Night fishing anglers are catching limits of fat healthy trout under a submersible light.   Try anchoring the boat in 25-50' of water, and dropping the light 15-25' feet down.  Be patient, it may take awhile for the light to attract plankton, baitfish, and trout.  To catch them, try using live minnows, mini jigs, Power Bait, and crawlers. Trolling anglers are starting to catch a few more on each outing. The trout feed on 2-4" shad.  Try using baits that match the size, profile and color of the baitfish.  Rapala Shad Raps, Scatter Raps, Rattle traps, and Jointed Shad Raps are a very close match to the natural forage.  Another way to get a few more bites is to add scent to your lures.  Pro Cure gel in shad scent, or threadfin shad scent will do the trick.  Don't forget to bring some crawlers.  A single crawler threaded on the hook fished behind a single gold or silver blade is a great way to pick up a few fish.

Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week goes to father and son Jim and Allen Munroe of Pine Grove. They caught two kokanee and four rainbows.  Their biggest was a beautiful 2-pound, 5-ounce rainbow.

Letter to the Editor - re: Wild and Scenic by Al Segalla

Dear Editor,

This is concerning designation of a portion of the Mokelumne river, downstream of a PG & E power generation dam, as "Wild & Scenic".

A study session of the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors is set for  6 PM on July 29th to consider rescinding it's previous endorsement of the proposed state law.

The endorsement was previously passed, without study, during a highly organized emotional demonstration by proponents.

Stage 3 'On Golden Pond' - "good laughs with a poignant edge" by Shari Schweigler

You know how America loved Archie Bunker?  Even though he was an irascible bigot who verbally abused his wife Edith and his son-in-law “Meathead,” audiences identified with him and sympathized with this “little guy” trying to make the world work for him.

Now imagine Archie as an intellectual, a long-married, retired professor who also has problems making the world work the way he wants.  You have Norman Thayer, Jr., the lead character in Ernest Thompson’s On Golden Pond, being produced by Stage 3 in Sonora. You may be familiar with the movie version of this play, which starred Henry Fonda, Kathryn Hepburn, and Jane Fonda, but if you haven’t seen the play, you are in for some good laughs with a poignant edge.

Sourdough Slim and Robert Armstrong pony up with great entertainment for Calaveras Arts Music in the Parks 2014

The Calaveras Arts Council is happy and laughing to bring back MIP favorites, cowboy entertainer Sourdough Slim and his sidekick Robert Armstrong to The HUB at the Arnold Cedar Center July 23, 2014.  Music starts at 6:30 pm, but get there early and stake your ground for these two cowboy entertainers.

Roots revivalists Sourdough Slim and Robert Armstrong are passionate about the music they play and the culture from which it springs.  Proud torch-bearers of America's rich roots music heritage, the two demonstrate their enthusiasm from the first catchy bars of "My Last Old Dollar" to the last wistful strains of their phenomenal re-creation of Stan Jones' immortal "Riders In The Sky." These exceptional showmen joyously rekindle the country blues, western classics, vintage jazz and string band repertoire of twentieth century rural America.  A fast-paced performance that showcases their seasoned gift for connecting with audiences is a surefire treat.

The Walking Man of Murphys – Ric Ryan – was presented with an Honor Bear from VFW Post 12118 Ladies Auxiliaryat the Angels Camp July 4th celebration held in Angels Camp Utica

Honor Bears are the brain child of auxiliary member Eva Murphy who began the project in 2013 in hopes of reaching out to wounded veterans to give them something that will comfort them without judgment and remind them they are loved. Each bear is lovingly crafted from era and service specific fabric from actual uniforms that have either been donated or purchased with special funds from the auxiliary.

Ric Ryan, who walks to raise funds for Operation Mend, a joint UCLA/Brown Medical Center endeavor to treat the scarring wounds of war specializing in burns and facial reconstruction, has walked a total of 6000 miles and raised over $20,000.00 for the cause.

To date, the VFW Ladies Aux has distributed over 200 Honor Bears to wounded veterans at Operation Mend, veterans’ homes and veteran hospitals.

Community Garden work party

Brief work  party tomorrow morning at 9 am. (7-19-14)
Joy has over a dozen 'very special' acorn squash plants we want to get in the ground - she will bring them by sometime after 9:30.

At last glance, the strawberry and bush beans were doing well but needed help to fight off the invasive weeds and grass.

If interested in checking out the garden, the tomatoes were looking very good last week, and the bell  peppers were ready to start setting flowers.

See you tomorrow! *:) happy

SRT's Sound of Music - Superb!!!

When a director asks oneself, "How do I direct a play meant for a large stage, with a large cast while dealing with a small stage meant for a small cast and still present as pure a product as possible?" They should talk with Scott Viets, charge of direction and choreography for Sierra Repertory Theater's  'The Sound of Music.'

Faced with the diminutive challenges of the Fallon House in Columbia, the direction, designers, lighting, and cast produced, without fail, one of the best renditions of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Sound of Music I have seen in years.

American Red Cross Making Capital Region Communities Fire Safe Fire safety outreach coming to Calaveras County this weekend

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Thursday, July 17, 2014 — The American Red Cross Capital Region is targeting “high-risk” communities to raise fire safety awareness and reduce fire risks. This Sunday, local Red Cross volunteers will begin an effort to educate and inform community members in Calaveras County about the dangers of home and wildfires and what they can do to prepare and reduce their risks.

“Home fires are by far the most common disaster across the country, so it is critical that everyone take steps to prepare and help prevent these tragedies,” said Kathleen Weis, Chief Executive Officer of the Red Cross Capital Region. “Building awareness and taking action is key to reducing the number of fire incidents in our communities.”

Israel sends ground troops into Gaza Strip

Israeli forces on Thursday launched a ground offensive in the Gaza Strip, the military said.
The operation came after 10 days of intense fighting between Israel and the Islamic militant Hamas, in which Israel hit more than 2,000 targets in Gaza and Hamas launched nearly 1,500 rockets at Israel.
The army said the offensive is meant to strike a ‘‘significant blow to Hamas’ terror infrastructure.’’
It did not say how many troops were involved or provide other details.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said he instructed the army to go ahead after Hamas rejected an Egyptian cease-fire plan earlier in the week and after Hamas militants tried to infiltrate into Israel through a tunnel from Gaza earlier Thursday.
‘‘In light of the despicable and relentless aggression by Hamas and the dangerous infiltration into Israel, Israel is obliged to protect its citizens,’’ the statement said.

George Runner Unveils Sales Tax Rate Heat Map

SACRAMENTO – George Runner today announced a new Board of Equalization heat map showing varying sales tax rates across California.

“California has more than two hundred sales tax rate jurisdictions, which can be confusing for taxpayers,” said Runner. “Our new map provides a picture of these rates and should serve as a helpful visual aid for taxpayers.”

The map complements the Board’s tax rate lookup tool that enables taxpayers to find a sales tax rate for a specific address.

Land Wanted - Buyers looking for acreage in Angels Camp or Copperopolis area

                        LAND WANTED

If you are thinking of selling your parcel, please consider this. While many parcels remain unsold for extended periods of time, we have several buyers seeking acreage for vacation or retirement in the Angels Camp and Copperopolis Area.
They have $20,000 to $40,000 cash for a down payment. However, there is no institutional financing for bare land.  Seller financing is needed.
We recommend offering fifteen year amortized financing at 5% APR with 20% cash down payment. On a $100,000 sale, the monthly payment would be $632.63.  The seller also may receive tax benefits and cash proceeds at close of escrow.
