SACRAMENTO – Today, the Assembly passed Assembly Bill 1592, by Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto, on a 76-0 vote. The bill will allow local jurisdictions the option of waiving building and inspection permit fees for ADA-type modifications to homes owned by veterans with service-related disabilities.
“Bureaucracy and red tape should never get in the way of veterans with disabilities trying to adjust to a new life,” said Olsen. “By waiving inspection fees for veterans modifying their homes to cope with their service-related injuries, we will help them save money and live a higher quality of life much sooner.”
Each county is entitled to collect fees for home modifications, improvements, and inspections. However, current law does not allow local jurisdictions the ability to waive part or all of the fees for disabled veterans with military service injuries.
Olsen introduced this measure at the request of Mono County. Counties like Mono would like to help disabled veterans return to civilian life, just as they are currently able to do for indigent veterans.
