Spellman addressed a crowd of approximately 10 to 12 people at his weekly forum in Copperopolis at Snaps Coffee House in Town Square on March 3, 2011 at 2:30 pm.
The first topic Spellman addressed was the fact that he receives multiple phone calls every day asking for assistance with issues resident’s have with other residents, agencies, or offices within the County. While he would like to “personally help each individual” he said, “if you have a problem I will guide you…send you in the right direction. I will request that you check back with me to let me know the results.” He assured the crowd that he was not shluffing off his responsibility to his constituents merely having people follow the chain of command.
Spellman updated the regulars at the meeting as to his progress on requests made to the County Auditor Rebecca Callen. He has made three requests:
~What percent of the overall budget revenue comes from District 5? And…What percent is coming back to District 5 in goods and services?
~A breakdown of the VLF (Vehicle Licensing Fee) revenues from District 5 and expenditures of those revenues. And a breakdown of the gas tax revenues from District 5 and expenditures of those revenues.
~How much of the County budget is set aside for snow plows and snow removal? Spellman claims that snow removal is not the responsibility of the County.
Spellman also addressed the FEMA flood zone issue, requesting that residents with ‘forced flood insurance’ issues attend a Board of Supervisors meeting and raise their issues publicly. He also supplied the name and phone number of the FEMA rep he had met with regarding the flood zone issues. Kathy Schaeffer 510-627-7129.
Touching on the subject of the recent allegations of harrassment made against him by his daughter's teacher, Spellman stated, "The meeting I had regarding my daughter was with three teachers, one administrator, me and my wife." Clarifying that he requested this because he wanted documentation of the meeting. With regards to allegations of using his position as a Supervisor to terminate the teacher in question, Spellman said, "I have no direct influence whether a teacher can get fired. ..I was there as an advocate for my daughter."
Finally Spellman stated he had met with Tom Hicks a rep from the Tuscany Hills project. According to Spellman the project will be moving forward on a smaller scale, 2k to 3k sq ft homes on smaller lots. The community will have a 501 (c) 3 built in to the community plan to be utilized for community betterment. Spellman suggested that a library would benefit the community as a whole, according to Spellman Hicks stated that a library was a definite possibility.
Supervisor Spellman is available to the residents of Copperopolis every Thursday afternoon at Snaps from 2:30 to 4:00.
