Judge Hugh Swift hits the campaign trail with a creative twist

Earlier this week Superior Court Judge Hugh Swift hit the campaign trail in Copperopolis on horseback.  Armed with saddle, horse and a wealth of information, Swift and a few friends headed out to canvas the almost 7 square miles of the Diamond XX subdivision in Copperopolis.

Typically, Judge Swift, seeking election to his current position as Superior Court Judge Dept 2, walks door to door as part of his campaign strategy.  However, not one to hide his equine enthusiasm Swift felt riding a horses would be a “great way to meet voters in the more rural areas of the County.”

After meeting with a number of residents in the XX’s, the crew headed to Town Square stopping by Roasters Coffee Corner for a cooling fruit smoothie and to chat with more locals.

According to Swift, he began riding as a youth but lost touch with horses over the years. His love of horses was rekindled when he learned of Harmony Ranch, a therapeutic horsemanship program for children with special needs. He quickly became a supporter of the ranch both financially and physically, allowing him to, once again, enjoy the connection between man and horse.

Swift was appointed to Calaveras Superior Court Judge in December 2013 and currently hears criminal, civil, traffic, family law, probate, domestic violence and civil harassment cases.   Since taking the bench, Judge Swift has presided over felony and misdemeanor jury trials, in addition to civil, family law and probate court trials.

Judge Swift was joined on his ride by campaign supporters River Klass, owner of Grounds and Firewood restaurants in Murphys, Karen Henderson, owner of Lila and Sage Cake and Catering, Tera Gulyas and Tara Glessman.
